Preview Video: Platformer "Freestyle - Tales of..." Mark Pursell, an Australian illustrator and creator of the "Freestyle" comic series, is currently developing a platformer based on the series using the Scorpion Engine. As the author reports, developing this game has "always been a childhood dream" of his, since he created these characters at a time when the Amiga was still considered the leading platform. Back then, however, he didn’t have the necessary skills to do so. The game itself is a genre mix that, much like his comics, is largely based on parodies and references to other games and media. This video offers only a first impression: much of it doesn’t work yet, much is unfinished, and there is still a lot to add and get up and running. Some parts, such as the opening scene of the "Cartype" level, he had just quickly cobbled together to see if he could get it to work. Collision detection is also still largely disabled. Defender of the Crown: remake announced for PC and game consoles Cinemaware's 1986 game "Defender of the Crown" is considered one of the most influential Amiga titles of all time: this cinematic strategy game set new graphical standards at the time and sold over a million copies. Now, to mark its 40th anniversary, developer Black Tower Basement and publisher Nordcurrent Labs have announced a remake. "Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns" is set to be released in 2026 for PC (Steam, GOG), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. According to the developer, the game will feature three modes: a Retro Mode that stays true to the original, a Classic Mode with modernized graphics and revamped mechanics, and a new Kingdom Mode with procedurally generated maps and roguelike elements. A YouTube video provides initial insights into the game modes and graphics. (nba) [News message: 31. Mar. 2026, 16:45] [Comments: 0] [Send via e-mail] [Print version] [ASCII version] |

Legal dispute: Rapprochement between Hyperion and Amiga; OS 3.2 available again In March 2024, Ben Hermans’ private company “Ben Hermans BV” (BHBV) had gone bankrupt. As a result, the Hyperion shares held by BHBV were annulled, which would have caused Ben Hermans to permanently lose control of Hyperion. The Belgian lawyer therefore sued the bankruptcy trustees of BHBV as well as Hyperion itself. Hermans lost the original case, and an appeal he filed was also decided against him in early February (PDF, Dutch). In theory, Hermans would have had three months after the ruling to file another appeal - but the case would then have gone before the Court of Cassation (Dutch: “Hof van Cassatie”), Belgium’s highest court. Proceedings there are reportedly very costly - lawyers arguing before this court require special certification. Apparently, Hyperion’s management is now certain that no further appeal will be filed: Behind the scenes, it has been said for years that without a resolution in the legal dispute with Ben Hermans, no progress could be expected in the legal battle with Amiga Corporation, among other matters. Today, however, both the Amiga Corporation and Hyperion confirm that initial agreements have apparently been reached between the two parties: In a press release distributed via email (see below), Hyperion refers to an “agreement to pause legal proceedings.” The company states that it has reached several “temporary agreements” to pave the way for negotiations toward a final settlement. As a result of these agreements, the digital version of AmigaOS 3.2 is now available again. The Amiga Corporation provides further clarification in a statement on Twitter: It describes itself as "Hyperion's licensor under the existing 2009 Settlement Agreement" and states that negotiations toward a final agreement have resumed. Press release from Hyperion Hyperion Entertainment BV and Amiga Corporation agree to pause legal proceedings Hyperion Entertainment BV and Amiga Corporation have entered into temporary agreements to pause their ongoing legal proceedings and enable both parties to better engage in settlement negotiations and work toward a resolution. As part of these agreements, Hyperion Entertainment BV will make AmigaOS 3.2 available in digital form. More info on that on our website. We remain committed to supporting the Amiga community and the continued evolution of AmigaOS. Thank you for your patience and support. Timothy De Groote Director Hyperion Entertainment BV Statement from Amiga Corporation Following positive developments concerning Hyperion Entertainment, progress has been made in narrowing a number of issues. Going forward, Amiga Corporation is Hyperion Entertainment CVBA's licensor under the existing 2009 Settlement Agreement. The chapter involving Cloanto, ITEC, Amino and KMOS has been closed. On that basis, Amiga and Hyperion Entertainment are engaged in renewed settlement discussions. It is also agreed that Retro Games may release certain Amiga-branded products, and that Hyperion Entertainment may offer "AmigaOS 3.2" digital upgrades under a temporary arrangement intended to preserve continuity for the community while those discussions continue. Since 1985, Amiga has held an enduring place in computing history. Amiga Corporation remains committed to the preservation, stewardship and continued development of that legacy.
