AROS: Icaros Desktop 2.0
After 18 months of development, version 2.0 of the AROS/x86-distribution Icaros Desktop has been released which includes major changes. In particular, the distribution (just like its previous "work-in-progress"-versions) is based on backports provided by Krzysztof 'Deadwood' Śmiechowicz. His ABIv0-on-trunk includes changes for the application binary interface ABIv0 which is used unter AROS/x86 so far and which were initially implmented for the forthcoming ABI-version 1.

The appereance has also changed because Icaros Desktop now uses DirectoryOpus 5 Magellan as user-interface (screenshot). Additionally the 68k-environment for Amiga games and applications has been polsihed and the faster TLSF memory management has been integrated. ZuneView, PictureAlbum and ScalOS (screenshot) have been added as new applications.

DirectoryOpus was pre-configured to make it a "reliable, usable and enjoyable replacement for Wanderer". ADF and ISO files now can be mounted and unmounted with ease via context menu or DiskImage GUI (screenshot). Regarding the 68k-emulation (screenshot) it is now possible to "run AmigaOS 3.X and AROS M68K concurrently". Applications have been updated e.g. LunaPaint (screenshot).

As usual Icaros Desktop is available in two versions: The executable Live!-package which includes a DVD-ISO-file for a native installation and a virtual machine for QEMU under Windows as well as the Light-version which only includes the most important files but fits on a CD-ROM or a 1-GB-USB-stick.

Paolo Besser was not only supported by Krzysztof Śmiechowicz who backported and updated the browser, bit also by Neil Cafferkey, who fixed several bugs in AROS, Oliver Brunner, who updated Janus-UAE, and Szilárd Biró, who ported DirectoryOpus 5 Magellan to AROS and helped to developed it further, as well as by 'Magorium' and other beta testers. Renegades Deluxe 2014
After he released his PD-game Renegades almost 20 years ago, Wayne Ashworth now has reworked it. Renegades is an Alien-Breed-clone for (exclusive) two players.

Renegades Deluxe 2014 has been graphically reworked and now offers new landscapes with random pickups, jammed doors, fake walls and injury of the players (more injured walk slower).

The game has been tested on an Amiga 1200 but according to the author will not run on an Amiga 500. If you take a picture of how you play Renegades Deluxe 2014, Wayne Ashworth would be pleased if you send it to him via eMail to convince him that nowadays people still like playing games using the Amiga.

Changes:
  • No 'Made in Amos' screen, instead it's 'Pickups explained'
  • New title screen artwork
  • New titlescreen music by Marcus Becker
  • New character selection screen
  • New character selection graphics
  • Slightly tweaked character stats
  • New in-game screen
  • New tileset
  • New maps
  • Jammed doors
  • Fake walls
  • Random pickups that vary each time you play the map
  • Injury (more injured walk slower)
  • Bleeding when injured
  • Randomised 'Winner' and 'Loser' messages

RadeonHD driver: Version 1.2 and 2.4 announced / Sam460cr installation solution
Under the title link A-EON Technology has announced updates of his RadeonHD graphic board driver for AmigaOS 4. Additional to the free update to version 1.2 for owners of version 1.0 of the driver released in April, there will be also the commercial version 2.4.

Version 1.2 of the the driver developed by Hans de Ruiter supports further RadeonHD boards of the R5, R7 and R9 serie (compatibility list). With version 2.4 the hardware accelerated video output in 1080p will be possible as announced at the AmiWest. DMA-support for RadeonHD boards will be available as well.

Features of the V2 driver:
  • YUV bitmaps with CompositeTags(). YUV420p bitmaps are 37.5% the size of 32-bit ARGB bitmaps so there's less data to copy to the graphics card
  • While overlay is restricted to 1-2 surfaces and does not respect transparency, Composite Video can render an unlimited number of surfaces and can perform alpha blending instead of chroma keying which can be used for advanced video effects
  • Videos can be Rotated, warped and even projected into another video
  • Alpha blending/compositing can be used for cross-fade between video files and other effects
  • Full 1080p Video playback with supported video files
  • Support for the latest generation of AMD Radeon Rx graphics cards from the R5, R7 and R9 series
The full RadeonHD driver ordered by A-EON Technology will be not part of the announced Final Edition of AmigaOS 4.1. In order to make the driver available to future owners of a Sam460cr without having to use an additional and old graphic board, a minimal version will be included. According to AmigaKit and confirmed by Hans de Ruiter, A-EON Technology, ACube Systems and Hyperion are working on an adequate solution. (snx) (Translation: dr)
