An die Amiga Gemeinde

Danke für Eure jahrelange Unterstützung und Loyalität gegenüber Amiga. Aber
nun  bin  ich  hier  um  Euch  ein  für  alle  mal klarzumachen, daß in der
Industrie kein Platz für den "Geist des Amigas" ist.

In den letzten paar  Wochen  haben  tausende  eMails  und  Nachrichten  von
blinden  Lemmingen  meine  In-Box  verstopft, die sich viel zu viele Sorgen
über die Zukunft des Amiga machen, weil sie die Geschehnisse bei Amiga Inc.
vielleicht  doch  richtig  zu  deuten wissen. Ich war sichtlich genervt und
habe diese Mails natürlich ungelesen  gelöscht.  Eure  Meinung  ist  völlig
irrelevant, der Pfad ist doch sowieso schon längst eingeschlagen.

Fakt ist... um J.M. Straczynski zu zitieren "Viel schwerwiegender  als  der
Tod  der körperlichen Materie, ist der Tod der Hoffung, der Tod der Träume.
Und vor dieser Gefahr dürfen wir niemals kapitulieren." In dieser  Hinsicht
sind  die  Amigianer tatsächlich nicht tot zu kriegen -- nein im Gegenteil:
Gerade nach meinen vernichtendem Executive Update  scheint  sich  mehr  und
mehr Energie in Projekten wie AQUA/Amino oder Phoenix zu konzentrieren. Ich
empfinde das mehr als verwirrend, habe ich ja noch nie einen Amiga besessen
oder damit gearbeitet.

Beim Amiga ging es -- und da müßt ihr  mir  zustimmen  --  niemals  um  ein
Computersystem.  Es  ging  nicht darum, daß das Arbeiten am Amiga effizient
war und Spaß gemacht hat. Nein, die Amiga-Gemeinde  war  schon  immer  eine
Gruppe  illusionierter, präpubertärer Fratzen, die eigentlich nur aus Trotz
immer wieder behauptet hatte,  "Mein  Computer  ist  besser  als  deiner!".
Amiga-User  hofften,  die  Welt  zu  verbessern. Tja, leider kommt ihnen da
immer wieder was  in  die  Quere,  oder?  Warum?  Weil  der  Amiga  niemals
allgegenwärtig wurde.

Das werde  ich  jetzt  ändern.  Der  Amiga  wird  in  Zukunft  als  Plug-In
existieren.  Ja,  ich  weiß, vielleicht glaubt ihr vor ein paar Wochen noch
andere Pläne gelesen zu haben, keine Angst, das waren nur  Halluzinationen.
Ich  selbst habe nie diese Pläne gelesen.

Kein OS mehr, keine Hardware, man  braucht  nichts  selbst  zu  entwickeln,
nein,  man  wird  in  Zukunft  die Gurumeditationen sogar auf Digital-Uhren
bekommen können! Ich  persönlich  bin  schon  sehr  begeistert!  Amiga  als
Applikation in jeder Mikrowelle. "Amiga for Windows"... denkt darüber nach.

Amiga und sein revolutionärer Geister verdienen nichts besseres als das. Es
ist ein neuer Mega-Trend und Amiga wird an vorderster Front dieser nächsten
großen  Kampfeinheit  in  der  Computergeschichte   stehen   --   und   von
verräterischen  Söldnern  wie  mir  erschossen  werden. Dafür haben wir uns
entschieden,  als  wir  von  einer  ziemlich  großen   Firma   eine   nicht
unerhebliche Bestechungssumme kassiert haben.

Also: Lang lebe Amiga, aber  wenn  Ihr  denkt,  daß  derjenige,  der  Amiga
besitzt,  ihn  auch  vernichten kann, dann habt ihr die Vergangenheit nicht
verstanden. Bei Amiga Inc. geht es  um  einen  profitableren  Weg.  In  den
kommenden  Monaten,  versprochen, werden wir Euch über Fortschritte bei der
Zerstörung des leblosen Amiga-Körpers auf dem Laufenden  halten,  und  wenn
Ihr  uns nicht weiter unterstützen wollt: bei Gateway kann man auf die alte
Userbasis verzichten -- ein paar neue Dumme werden schon drauf reinfallen.

Amiga Inc. kann die Industrie nicht revolutionieren und die Welt verändern.
Dazu braucht es Visionäre.

Ich war`s...,
der damals den ersten Amiga gekauft hat...
Wenn ich gewußt hätte, was ich damit anrichte, hätte ich es sicher
nicht getan, ich schwör`s! Beim Leben meiner ersten Festplatte :-))

Fazit: Gelernt und nie vergessen:

Kaufe nie als erster ein Produkt, zwischen 10 und 100 tausend oder
noch mehr könnten Dir folgen und anschließend nicht beschreibare
Leiden erdulden müssen! Kann man das verantworten? Ich sage nein!

Unendliches Leid habe ich über tausende und abertausende gebracht,
von denen ich nicht mal die Hälfte kenne. Seit Jahren treu zur Fahne
stehend, haben sie Ozeane an Tränen durchquert, bis zuletzt immer
wieder am Honig der Hoffnung genippt... vor allem aber eins:
Sich zu nicht belehrbaren Fanatikern entwickelt, die emotional nur
noch in der Lage sind, extreme Höhen oder Tiefen zu erleben.

Es ist nicht zu fassen:
Inzwischen werden sogar Smileys "gedeutet"!

Fehlt bloß noch, daß jemand die Ladezeit der AI-Homepage interpretiert,
aber das kommt auch noch, wetten?

Alsooo:

Ein Computer, der laut Meinung der "Gemeinde" ("Amiga=Gott"), sowieso
kein Amiga mehr gewesen sein würde, wird nicht gebaut (oder vielleicht
nicht gebaut oder er hätte sowieso soo nicht gebaut werden sollen oder
können).

Was passiert?
Die gleiche Gemeinde erleidet kollektiv akute Diarrhoe und fühlt sich
erneut verraten (wieso eigentlich erneut?; Den Walker wollte auch
keiner haben).

Die Gemeinde wird - nach ihrem eigenen Selbstverständnis - sowieso
ständig verraten (und verkauft, hihi).
Sie braucht das auch, mindestens, um ihre Diskussionsforen zu füllen,
weil sonst die Ladezeiten gewaltig runtergingen...
Sie braucht es, weil am Computerhimmel ja immer der schreckliche
Wintel-Gott, der den Amiga-Gott zu seinem persönlichen Feind erklärt
hat, droht. Dem "Amirage-Gott", der seit Neuestem seine Kreise zieht,
mag der eine Teil noch nicht so recht trauen... was ihm den Haß des
anderen Teils einbringt, der genau in diesem den neuen Heilsbringer
sieht :-)

Der "Boxer-Gott" verspricht da nur wenig Abhilfe, da er nicht in
der Lage ist, Armageddon zu gewinnen. Ebensowenig wie der
"IWIN-Gott". Da hilft es auch wenig, wenn "AI-Gott" plötzlich als
Teufel "erkannt" wird. Die Gemeinde leidet Höllenqualen (sic!).

Was soll die Gemeinde machen?

Sie will sich ihren eigenen Gott schaffen. Klasse.

Nun gibt es fürchterlich wenig brauchbare (wenn überhaupt eine)
Definitionen von "Gott". Wollte man die noch am meisten plausiblen
heranziehen (und das sind keine Definitionen), so ergibt sich als
eine der Quintessenzen: "Gott kann Sachen, die wir nicht können".
Mithin will die Gemeinde ihren "Gott" selber schaffen, was aber
à priori nicht möglich ist; niemand kann das Ideal verkörpern,
woran er glaubt. Die Gemeinde begeht den Fehler, zu denken (?),
sich mit dem "spirit of amiga" zu identifizieren, genüge, selbst
"spirit" zu werden. Der "spirit" lebt in der Gemeinde, das ist wahr,
aber die Gemeinde ist nicht der "spirit" (genausowenig wie ich
Beethovens 9te bin).

Die Gemeinde ist, leicht nachzuweisen, manisch depressiv.
Beweis: Sämtliche Foren, die von Gefühlsausbrüchen überquellen.
Onkel Sigmund hätt` sich ge"freud".

Beim Lesen des Ac-Forums - neulich - tippte mir mein Alter Ego auf
die virtuelle Schulter und fragte: "Wovon redet Ihr da eigentlich?
Von Computern? Ich dachte immer, die sollen das Leben erleichtern und
nicht zur Hölle machen?" Stimmt wohl.

Ich, für meinen Teil, werde in Zukunft sehr darauf achten, nie wieder
etwas als Erster zu kaufen; DAS tu ich mir nicht nochmal an!

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:

 We present the much anticipated statement from the new President of
Amiga below. Frankly, we're not sure what to make of it and will
withhold most of our comments for a few days to think it over. Our
first thought, in all honesty, is a question: if the Amiga isn't a
"box" or an operating system, what, exactly, is left? Clearly, this
statement tells us there will not be a computer from Amiga. We never
expected them to make many, but we did expect them at least to control
hardware specs for a new machine, based on recent developments. An
Internet Appliance server for the home if nothing else. Also, we
expected the same control for an operating system, not just something
to run on top of other operating systems (Windoze? NT? Mac? Solaris?)
also based on recent developments. Our second thought is another
question: what is the cost of a good Dell computer running Linux? Our
third thought: are we being too hasty in seeing only negatives here?
Is there a real vision spelled out here which could, in fact, be the
next real Amiga? That IS a possibility ... I think ...
 We like to give everyone a fair chance. So, you'll get a real
editorial in the near future, after we digest this, but not tonight.
However, we bring you a second story that may be of interest to some.
 Nothing seems to come easily for us, does it?

TO: THE AMIGA COMMUNITY

 Thanks for your notes and comments about our plans for Amiga. In the
past couple weeks, we've received hundreds -- if not thousands -- of
emails and messages from loyal Amigans worldwide, many of you
expressing a concern about Amiga's future based on recent reports in
the media and in numerous chat rooms. I am so impressed with the
spirit and passion of this great community and I wanted to make sure I
told you that.

 The fact is... to borrow from Mark Twain... the reports of Amiga's
death have been greatly exaggerated. To that end, I wanted to provide
a little more detail about our plans for Amiga... both as a product
and as a company, and hopefully clear up any confusion that exists.

 First, I hope you'd agree that Amiga was never about a box. It was
never about an operating system either. Sure those things were part of
what made the original Amiga great, but at its heart, Amiga was simply
about a better way. Amiga was ahead of its time. Amiga promised to
change the world. It ran against conventional wisdom and was better
than anything out there at the time. In fact, we could all argue that
it's still better than anything out there.

 The ideals and spirit of that original Amiga are alive and well
today. But to limit Amiga to just one box, one product, one OS, is to
keep Amiga from ever seeing its full potential. Think about it.... The
original Amiga never did really reach its full potential despite its
technical advantages and its cost and ease of use advantages. Why?
Because it never became ubiquitous. The company's early vision was
probably too limited for the vast potential that Amiga offered.

 The original Amiga was all about multi-media, so why not have Amiga
running on every type of device imaginable, on top of every other OS
out there? That's the beauty of Amiga and where we are as an industry.
We're in the midst of a revolution unlike anything the world has seen,
and Amiga has never been better positioned to change that world and
make a bigger impact. Limiting Amiga to just one box and one OS at
this point would be like offering the world a better horse and
carriage at the dawn of the automotive age. Amiga and its
revolutionary spirit deserve better than that. Amiga is going to
produce software technology that will enable Internet services on an
emerging category of products commonly referred to as "Information
Appliances". It is an exciting new mega trend in the industry and we
are excited about being at the forefront of this next great wave in
computing history. In addition, we have decided to work with business
partners who will deliver our software technology on their systems,
rather than enter the hardware business directly.

 So long live Amiga, but if you think that Amiga was just a box,
you've missed the point. Amiga is about a better way. In the coming
weeks and months, we promise to keep you posted on progress against
our plans for Amiga, and we thank you for your continued support.
Let's work together to enable Amiga to revolutionize the industry and
change the world!

 We are pleased to announce the acceptance of provisional charter for
the Phoenix Platform Consortium.

 Phoenix signatories believe it is time to place our destiny back in
the hands of folks who understand what the Amiga is all about. You
will notice members of the original Jay Miner team within our ranks.

 Unlike other new entities we will not field questions from
newsgroups, mailing lists, or in email, nor will we be erecting a
marketing facade to false hopes. Results and honest direction are our
mandate.

 The Phoenix Platform Consortium will assume responsibility for aid
and recommendation for reference platforms for the Amiga users who
wish to upgrade their present Amigas, as we establish an open
migration path to a new platform. That platform will in spirit and in
feel be a new Amiga experience while incorporating and surpassing the
features found on the desktop elsewhere today.

 More information will be posted when we have facts to present. Please
do NOT email the participants in curiosity. We ask for your patience
in this matter. Please respect the wishes of the participants named
below. There is much to do and we have just begun.

Dear Sir,

we are the Amiga community. We are a community of people brought together
by a very different kind of computing, which survived despite the gravest
of circumstances, beyond bancrupty, beyond despair, beyond obsoletion.

The community survived because there was hope, and little alternative.

We look at the market of home, personal, and office computing, and we see
bloated, inefficient, unreliable systems that offer little "feeling" to
the power user, and much irritation to the beginner.

So we dared to hope, that one day there would be a computing alternative
available again to the masses, one that made computing fun again for
everyone, not only for the elusive few who actually like to modify arcane
registry entries or .rc lines.

And our hopes, for long, and sometimes very dark years, were on the brand
named "Amiga", because this brand - rather, the philosophy and spirit it
stood for - embodied what we liked in computing.

We have seen many changes at the helm, even more changes in direction.

And every time again, ever since EsCom times up to the latest ongoings at
Amiga Inc., whenever there was a change at helm or a change in direction,
we feared.

Our fear always was the same. Will there be an Amiga computer we can
buy, to sit on our desks at home or in the office?

There has always been talk about Set-Top-Boxes. In more recent times,
there is talk about "information appliances".

But what the community anxiously waits for, always has waited for when
the winds of change were blowing, is not about Set-Top-Boxes, not about
"information appliances". I do not want to critizise, to the contrary.
There are evolving markets out there waiting to be explored, and it is
a good feeling that Amiga might be among the spearhead of explorers to
this market.

However, for us, the existing, living, starving community scattered all
around the world, for the distributors, developers, vendors, users, for
us, it is the desktop we most anxiously wait for.

Yes, there certainly is a mass market for Set-Top-Boxes and information
appliances, and the Amiga Inc. concept for a pervasive home network is
a nice one for sure. But all this is not what the brand "Amiga" promises
to us.

To make a long story short, to ask the question so vital for motivation,
faith, and hope for many of us, I ask you:



- Do the plans at Amiga Inc., which you told us will be followed
  through, still include a home/personal computer product range similar
  or at least alike to the "Multimedia Convergence Computer" previously
  presented by Amiga Inc.?
  Manufactured by Amiga Inc. itself, or by third party manufacturers?

  (Means, will we see hardware as revolutionary as your software
  technology, or will we share the fate of BeOS, fine OS without
  own plattform?)

- And will it be presented anywhere near to the original time scale
  (1st quarter 2000)?



A question so simple, but of utmost importance for those who look at
Amiga Inc. today. Those looking at Amiga tomorrow might be satisfied
by Set-Top-Boxes and "information appliances".

We are not. Scatter our fears.

OS3.5 demonstration in the Benelux.

On saturday the 18th of september Dirk Harlaar of Haage & Partner
will give a demonstration of the new OS3.5 in Leeuwarden, located
in the Netherlands. Propably this will be the final salesversion.
This day will be organized by the AGGF and ComputerCity, the OS3.5
distributer in the Benelux.

Os3.5 demonstratie bij the AGGF.

Zaterdag 18 september zal Dirk Harlaar van het Duitse Haage&Partner bij de
Amiga Gebruikers Groep Friesland
het nieuwe besturingssysteem OS3.5 komen demonstreren. Het is zelf
waarschijnlijk dat het hier om de
definitieve versie gaat, zoals dit op de markt gaat komen.
Deze dag wordt door de AGGF in samenwerking met ComputerCiy, de officiële
importeur, van OS3.5 georganiseerd.

De locatie is Clubhuis 'Welgelegen', W.Loréstraat 36 te Leeuwarden. Open
10:30-16:30.

1. Phönix wird ein System aufstellen, das den "Classic" Amiga von Beginn an integriert. Es soll einen gangbaren Weg zu neuen Plattformen geben, die "Kompatiblität" zur bestehenden Hardware ist nicht nachgeschoben sondern Initialie
2. Phönix wird ein System aufstellen, das dank dem Neutrino Kern von Beginn an portierbar ist. Damit können sowohl PPC als auch Intel Plattformen grundsätzlich bedient werden. Eine Heirat mit irgendeinem MCC ist nicht notwendig - wohl aber möglich.
3. Phönix hat bereits jetzt, nach wenigen Tagen offizieller Existenz, fast alle wichtigen Amiga-Application-Entwickler sowie einige führende Hardware-Entwickler an Bord. Damit besteht ein kaum zu übertreffendes Know-How des "Amiga Spirit" (was immer das ist). Wenn hier von einer Wiedergeburt des Amiga gesprochen wird, dann von Leuten, die den heutigen Amiga bestimmend gestaltet haben - hier reden keine Manager, die sich die Materie anlesen müssen.
4. Phönix beheimatet genügend hochrangige Software-Entwickler, daß selbst auf einem komplett neuen System in vertretbarer Zeit reale Applikationen existieren können. Durch die Einbindung des "Classic" kann und soll der Kreis der Applikationen sogar maximiert werden.
5. Phönix stellt keine spinnerte Idee dar, deren gesamte Komponenten erst noch entwickelt werden müssen - denn die wesentlichen Bestandteile wie QNX (Neutrino), Rebol und andere existieren bereits und sind erfolgreich. Hier wird keine Phantasie beschrieben sondern Realität.
6. Phönix hat bereits Verbindungen zu führenden Hard- und Software-Herstellern geknüpft, um in engsten Zeitrahmen Ergebnisse präsentieren zu können. Die Namen der Firmen sind nicht wie anderswo "streng geheim" sondern in der Liste der Unterstützer eindeutig zu finden.

• keine Heirat mit irgendeiner begrenzten Plattform (wie Amiga Classic) sondern Verwendung eines existierenden, expandierenden und zukunftsfähigen Kernels von QNX
• ein Echtzeitsystem aus einer Hand ist mir lieber als das Compilat der Bemühungen von tausenden Entwicklern weltweit
• extrem enge Zeitrahmen zur Realisation von Ergebnissen (die Ankündigungen sind nicht erst Jahre später sondern in Wochen überprüfbar)
• keine Phantasie-Produkte sondern Verwendung existierender Technik wie QNX, Rebol, voraussichtlich ARTAS
• realistische Vorhaben "hinter den Kulissen", sprich: konkrete Pläne, die die Ergebnisse von Phönix voraussetzen
