AmigaOne Discussion Board Remains Open
On November 24th, amiga-news.de reported that Amiga Inc.'s AmigaOne discussion
board will be closed on December 1st. The reason was a huge number of insults
which were published there.
On November 28th, Gary Peake of Amiga Inc. has announced in the Team Amiga
mailing list that the AmigaOne discussions won't be closed. He doesn't know
where the remark originated from, at least it didn't come from Amiga.
So the discussion board can still be
accessed,
but now only for registered users, which wasn't explicitly mentioned by
Gary Peake.
If anyone asks, we are NOT closing the AmigaOne forums on
www.amiga.com
Somebody must have been playing on their Momma's computer and got
loose and posted that remark.
It did NOT come from us. [...] (Gary Peake)

AmigaOS 3.9 - a well done surprise?
In fact we would have liked to write an article about the new AmigaOS 3.9 on our own, but found the
article by Martin Steigerwald in the AMIGA Magazin 01/2001
so much perfect that we asked Joern-Erik Burkert, member of the editorial staff at Amiga Magazin,
to allow us publising it on amiga-news.de in both, German and English. Thank you very much for consent.
AmigaOS 3.9 - A well done surprise?
© AMIGA Magazin - Author: Martin Steigerwald
Translation by Martina Jacobs
This article in German
The announcement of the AmigaOS 3.9 came by accident for many people. Only a few dared to
think of having a new version of the AmigaOS in their hands within this year, already.
Nevertheless Haage&Partner together with many partners developed the new OS. Read
in this initial overview which new features it offers, and come to your own
conclusion whether or not this surprise was well done.
AmigeOS 3.9 is shipped on CD-ROM. Who is not satisfied by the operating system's online
help might order a printed version (German) from Haage&Partner, which is a tips&tricks
book describing what's new in AmigaOS 3.9 in a comprehensive way.
AmigaOS 3.9 contains big and completely new implemented features, e.g. the dock program
»AmiDock«, as well as many enhancements in detail and bugfixes, too. Additionally
proved third party tools are integrated: features formerly only available as patches, such as
like the FontCache or the configuration of asl file requesters, now are firmly integrated into
the OS, tools like »RAWBInfo«, and »ViNCEd« simplify the daily work.
The description of new features in this article does not claim to be complete and bases on
a pre-version of AmigaOS 3.9. But the features described here are already implemented and
supposed to be for sure.
Simplified Installation
Compared to AmigaOS 3.5 installation has been simplified distinctly. It is no longer
necessary to install AmigaOS 3.1, at first. Also there is no need to restart the system, any
more. There are two kinds of installation: the update installation updates an existing AmigaOS 3.5,
and only copies icons which are new since OS 3.5. The full installation installs AmigaOS 3.9 -
including all of the necessary files of AmigaOS 3.5, and AmigaOS 3.1 - including all of the GlowIcons.
Full installation also allows a fast new installation of the system, if booted from a before created
emergency disk. This way AmigaOS 3.9 can be re-installed easy and fast even in case of a complete harddisk
failture. As with AmigaOS 3.5 the emergency disk also supports RTG systems and AGA 31KHz screenmodes.
Due to this also in case of emergency no 15KHz monitor is needed, any more.
Well Docked?
»AmiDock« simplifies working with the Workbench in a enormous way. To start programs
usually one has to click down to the related directory and then double click the program's icon. But
with »AmiDock« you are able to easily create button strips, which allow to open programs and
directories by one single mouse click.
Contrary to most of the other tools like this AmiDock fully supports the new coloured icons. And - maybe
the most important feature - it is extremely easy and fast to use. If you would have to open a
configuration window for other programs, with »AmiDock« you just drag the icon of the
desired directories and programs into a dock. If you drop the icon, it will automatically be included.
This way docks can be created as fast as the wind, cause you don't have to configure each single
switch. Moreover this, there are default configurations for certain directories: e.g. AmiDock just
reads the »Prefs« and displays all of the preferences in one dock.
Also the adjustment of the dock's size is conceivable intuitive. Instead of being forced to declare
the number of lines and columns inside a configuration window, you just drag the dock to the desired
size. Then the dock will be fixed at the related width and height. AmiDock shows this by a small
handle bar. By clicking on this the size will be released, again. Or you just drag the dock to a new
size.
Beside of calling programs AmiDock also supports opening directories on the Workbench, as well as
calling programs using arguments: so e.g. you may drag'n drop a text on the switch which for example
will start the editor »EditPad«, and just lets EditPad insert this text.
More comfortable Workbench
Also in other parts working with the Workbench became more comfortable: many new assistants are
supporting the daily work. »RAWBInfo« offers a Workbench information window with a nice
ReAction GUI which really has got many features. E.g. you even can give an icon a different
picture which is loaded via datatypes.
To make the Workbench deal with files which don't have an icon in a reasonable way there is
»DefIcons«. This program gives files without an own icon a default icon according to
the file type. This way pictures and texts without an icon can easily be started via double click.
DefIcons can be configured via it's own preferences program.
Who - a bit envious of Apple or Windows - always was wishing a trashcan directly on the Workbench,
will get this feature in OS 3.9. With »BenchTrash« this is no problem. This program
either just will delete files dropped on the trash or will move them to a certain directory. But that's
not all of it: who always wanted to eject a CD-Rom like it is done on the Mac can do that now. Just
drag'n drop the CD's icon on the trash, and there you go! Also handy is the feature to clean up the
trash regularly and to delete every file older than a certain amount of days.
It has also been cared for a new clock. »WBClock« displays itself as an animated AppIcon
on the Workbench. It even is optionally transparent, which looks very good sometimes.
Also very handy is the search function of the Workbench. This is done by a external program called
»Find« which can be started via the Workbench menu »Window/Search« or as a single
task. According to how it was started and configured it allows to search in the current Workbench
directory or in one or more harddisk partitions. It cannot only be searched for file names, but
also for contents (e.g. keywords). Double clicking on a file found tries to start a reasonable action
on it: this way e.g. a seldom used file can be searched and started directly from Find.
LhA, LZX, but also archive files of other formats (see »Features«) can be unpacked
by a simple double click, thanks to the implementation of »xad« in AmigaOS 3.9. »xad«
supports many formats. This way the user only seldom will happen to meet an archive which cannot be
unpacked, if any. Related programming knowledge assumed one can write an own unpacking routine.
»xad« can also be addressed via shell commands.
More Multimedia
But also some has happened in the case of multimedia. PlayCD, the somehow bare appearing CD player from
AmigaOS 3.5 has been started up thoroughly: the program now supports skins. Another advancement: PlayCD
as a rule doesn't need to be configured any more, but itself looks for a suitable CD-Rom drive,
if necessary.
»ACTION« plays Quicktime and AVI movies optionally on an own screen or inside a window on the
Workbench. In doing this it's very fast. Even on not that good equipped Amigas acceptable results are
to accomplish. Control buttons allow to start and stop the movie, to adjust volume, as well as to
well directed »skim through« the movie using a scroll bar.
»Amplifier« beside MPEG-3 music files also plays AIFF and WAV files. It has got play lists which
can be both, loaded and saved. The program as well supports skins and is capable of playing music either
via the Amiga sound chip Paula or via a sound card. With this the standards AHI and X-Audio are supported.
A X-Audio driver for the Paula sound chip is included. On the Workbench music files can easily be drag'n
dropped into the play list to add them to this.
»AWeb SE 3.3« which came with AmigaOS 3.5 has been updated to the new version of »AWeb«.
This version now also supports »FONT FACES«. So you can let it display websites nicer and
more true to original with suitable fonts. Support of JavaScript has been enhanced, too, and much more.
And to be able to start surfing immediate AmigaOS 3.9 contains the full version of »Genesis« with
ReAction GUI. Only the Genesis preferences program could not be transposed to ReAction in time, because
of it's scope. Who has MUI installed can use it however - otherwise MUI must get installed. But
the enhanced Genesis Wizard compensates for that, which makes it very easy to configure an internet
account on the basis of the provider database.
Powerful Console
Beside of the extensions to the Workbench and the players also shell enthusiasts will not miss out with
the new update: as console handler for shell windows now the powerful »ViNCEd« is used.
From now on all of the console windows are having scrollbars to re-display text which scrolled out of
the window. But it also has been thought of the shell users which don't like typing in: using the TAB key
incomplete file or directory names can be completed now. With this »ViNCEd«, according to it's
settings, not only searches for suitable entries inside the current directory, but e.g. also inside the
assign list or inside the command search path. If »ViNCEd« finds only one entry the string
immediately gets completed, otherwise an asl requester will open to choose from the suitable entries
found. Handily the completion also works multileveled: if needed the given string gets completed up to
the first char from which multiple entries are possible. By entering a character or pressing the TAB key
and selecting an entry the procedure can be continued. »ViNCEd« is very versatile configurable and
offers many other features.
- complete ANSI emulation
- supports graphics boards
- Macros - with these e.g. it is possible to use the F keys for often used commands and functions.
- configurable keyboard control
- Job control, as known form Unix shells
And what else?
Moreover there is a nice set of interesting and useful features: so the new »diskfont.library«
with integrated FontCache cares for faster display of font requesters. This features has been implemented
completely transparent for applications, but also can be disabled for single directories. New installed or
deleted fonts are automatically recognized and the cache file gets updated accordingly.
Also »asl« has been extended. Using the preferences program position, size, and sorting order of
asl requesters can be set. Also this is not a patch any more, but is »officially« controlled
by the new »asl.library«, and the new »IPrefs«. The »text.datatype« now
supports searching inside of the text, as well as marking parts of the text. Marked parts handily
are automatically copied to the clipboard. Also the »string.gadget« has been extended: so now you
can mark char by char or undo the last change inside of every text input field.
The new »test« function of the screenmode preferences program is a nice detail, too.
You no longer have to tapper in the dark and maybe reboot, if the newly chosen mode accidently cannot be
displayed contrary to what you've expected.
New Features
- AmiDock: completely new written and extremely easy to use dock program. The fast way to easy
start programs or to open certain directories.
- Integration of Workbench extensions: »RAWBInfo« offers a nice done and rich of functions
Workbench information window, »DefIcons« a default icon system
- More compatibility: »newiconemu« allows to edit the new coloured icons
(»V44-GlowIcons«) with NewIcon capable programs, too.
- New Tools: »BenchTrash«, the free configurable trashcan on the Workbench; »WBClock«
, the clock being an icon; as well as »IoMegaTools«,
the tool for ZIP and JAZ drives.
- Extended PowerPC support: WarpOS V5 is included, new »picture.datatype« supports PPC
- More multimedia: new versions of »PlayCD« with skin support and many bugfixes;
QuickTime and AVI movie player »ACTION«; player for MPEG3, AIFF, and WAV »Amplifier«
- Genesis: the TCP/IP stack for local area networks and internet connection - already widely with ReAction GUI.
- xad: the archive unpacking system. unpack archives from the Workbench by just double clicking it. Supports
LhA, LZX, ZIP, RAR, ARJ, DMS, and many other formats.
- ViNCEd: new console handler with scrollbar, file name completer, ANSI emulation, and many other handy
features.
- AWeb 3.4 SE: the in AmigaOS 3.5 included browser has been updated.
»FONT FACE« support, enhanced Javascript support, and much more.
- Find: allows searching for file names or file content on multiple partitions. Can be called directly from
the Workbench menu.
- Asl requester: there is also a preferences program for setting the size of, and the sorting order inside of
requesters.
- text.datatype: now allows searching inside of the text, and copying of marked text parts into the clipboard.
- New gadgets: the colour wheel (»colorwheel.gadget«), and the gradient slider (»gradientslider.gadget«)
now support screens with 65000 or 16 millions of colours; the new »string.gadget«
offers marking char by char, undo, and much more.
- New FontCache: faster display of font requesters.
- rexxmathlib.library: new math functions for ARexx.
- Many bugfixes: new mathe libraries with important bugfixes, bugfixes in ReAction, Workbench, and many other.

wARPgATE to be in German only
Due to editorial reasons wARPgATe is to be continued in German only from 01. Dec. 2000.
Background: Because of rather low response in spite of much efforts, and recently number of vistors per day
on the WarpOS news pages decreased to 300, unfortunately our editor left the wARPgATe project. Also the
future of WarpOS rather is unsettled with view on the change to a new Amiga era whith the AmigaOne. Not to
completely shock the users we decided to continue the site as it is from 01. Dec. 2000, and to expand it
as the case may be. But we are only able to do that in German, so the site will not be continued in
English after it's 21 month lasting existence. We ask you for your understanding.

ALD Problems Solved
Today we accidently noticed that Amiga Link Directory worked, but it was not possible to make new
entries. Caused by the move the rights have still not been set completely right. We have corrected
this error, and now we are hoping for many new entries.

It will really be worth visiting the fair, because Bill McEwen will be present and will inform us about
the future of Amiga, as the management of the fair said.
The fair will take place from 9th to 10th of December from 10 am to 6 pm on each day. Location is the

Alternative-Games.de will start on December 1st, 2000
Lately there were an increasing number of cooperations and joint-ventures of firms that only
released for one of the alternative computer systems until now. We want to support the activities
of these firms by establishing a portal for users of every alternative system. This portal will
contain news, reviews and much more.
From the start there will be an Amiga and a Macintosh section. For additional sections we are
missing people who are willing to help us to make the project a success. We are looking for
section managers for Linux, BeOS and Milan (Atari). But we still need some persons for the
Amiga and Mac sections. If you would like to help us with reviews and reports, please mail

AmigaSDK: Atoll
On November, 25th 2000 Jarno van der Linden published the alpha version of the
developer tool 'Atoll'. This tool converts C link libraries, like libpng.a or libjpeg.a almost
automatically into a tool set (tool sets on AmigaSDK "match" to the libraries on other systems).
Up to now is has been tested successful with libpng.a and libjpeg.a (part of gfx/misc/libjpeg-6a.tbz2).
To use Atoll knowledge of VP assembler is necessary, and knowledge of sed and regular expressions are
useful. Atoll itself additionally needs the
gd.tgz-Archiv.
The documentation for Atoll declares how to convert libjpeg.a into a tool set. To try this example
the
gfx/misc/libjpeg-6a.tbz2-Archiv
is needed.

Ben Yoris, PR-Manager of Hyperion Entertainment Software, wrote to the G-REX
mailinglist that Hyperion plans to support the G-REX since they definitely will
need the power of Voodoo3 cards for future games.
Vision Factory Development informed that G-REX will be supported by CyberGFX
V4, the software already has been finished.

AROS Update
From November, 3rd 2000 to November, 19th 2000
following information about the evolution of this AmigaOS compatible
open source OS have been added to the AROS homepage.
Joerg Dietrich added a ppm.datatype for PPPM graphics, and the
dtdesc tool. This tool allows to create and analyse datatype
descriptions. Georg Steger used it to improve the FTXT datatype.
The binary.datatype has been ported back to AmigaOS V3.5 by Joerg Dietrich.
Tobias Seiler fixed a long standing bug in the keyboard initialization of AROS
Native/i386, so PS/2 keyboards should work now.
Georg Steger first added a port of reqtools.library, and then ported more and
more programs which use Reqtools and fixed a lot of bugs in the code. The port
of Reqtools should be finished, soon. He finished gadtools.library. He also
committed rewritten routines for the DOS functions MatchFirst(), MatchNext(),
and MatchEnd(). These should work in all cases, now. This fixes all the related
bugs, like List C:. He also fixed some bugs in the
graphics.library-to-HIDD driver and the workbench.library as well as renamed
the OO Routines into something more easily distinguishable from BOOPSI (the
OO system also used DoMethod(), etc. which could cause confusions).
Johan Alfredsson worked on DOS commands (Info, Status, Execute, Which) and
fixed a lot of bugs in the dos.library. He ported the C:Search utility written
by Neil Cafferkey to AROS.
He added the nvdisk.library. He added and finished the nonvolatile.library.

Amiga Forever 4.0
Amiga Forever is the all-in-one Amiga emulation and connectivity environment for PCs,
officially licensed by Amiga International. We are pleased to announce the
release of Amiga Forever 4.0. This new version includes version 3.1 of the
Amiga ROM and OS files and AGA support under WinUAE. Additional pre-installed
programs and features, like for example Personal Paint, DirectoryOpus 5.5,
TurboText, drag-and-drop LhA de-archiving, and the ToolManager dock have been
updated.
This version additionally includes an archive with a new,
ready-to-run PowerMac version. This emulation is currently the only way of
having an Amiga laptop (if we assume that you install it on a PC laptop or on
a Mac Powerbook/iBook)
New features of Amiga Forever 4.0:
- GlowIcon look (as used in Amiga OS 3.5, but also compatible with NewIcons
and MagicWB)
- Option to switch entire environment from "new look" (GlowIcons) to
"old look" (Classic) and vice versa
- Amiga Explorer 4.0 (includes revolutionary self-install over serial
cable, plus new Cut, Copy, Paste functions)
- Directory Opus 5.5 (courtesy of GPSoftware)
- Personal Paint 7.1b
- Built-in support for ADZ and DMS disk image files
- Print spooler (easily print all Amiga documents under Windows, bypassing
parallel port emulation)
- New emulation and Workbench configuration results in faster emulation of
the Amiga CPU
- New MenuBox launcher (easier to use)
- Dozends of other enhancements and new add-ons
- MPEG-1 videos (CD-ROM version): The Deathbed Vigil (one hour and 58
minutes) and Jay Miner Speech (49 minutes)
Amiga Forever 4.0 - Overview
Amiga Forever contains state of the art software to satisfy two major needs
of many Amiga users: to share data between Amiga and other systems, and to use
their existing Amiga software and data on non-Amiga hardware.
Additionally, software, tutorial and reference files which are likely to be of
interest to any Amiga enthusiast are included with the CD-ROM. More details.

Amiga, Inc.: Executive Update by Bill McEwen
In the new Executive Update by Bill McEwen, the main subject is OS3.9
(sales lauch on the WoA2000), and the SDK. According to McEwen there is a
possibility of another classic AmigaOS Update (4.0). Good sales of OS3.9 are
the condition to this however.
Executive Update
Dear Amiga Family:
It is now November 2000, eleven months after we took over the helm of Amiga. We have made some changes to the original plan, and continue to do our best in carrying the vision forward.
In the next two weeks, the next new product from Amiga will begin shipping - Amiga OS 3.9! This build has been designed specifically for one group - You, the Amiga family. We have been working very closely with Haage and Partner in creating a great new product offering for Amiga that you will all be very proud of.
Will there be a 4.0? This really depends on the sales of OS 3.9. You see, we did not have any plans for another version of the Classic OS. But we continued to receive requests, and because we listen to community, we decided to move ahead with Haage and Partner on this project. If OS 3.9 sells well, and we see a continuing need to produce for the existing Classic Amiga platform, then there is a strong possibility of a 4.0.
It is in your hands.
No matter what happens, AmigaDE is still moving ahead quickly and we look forward to delivering another version of the Amiga Software Development Kit (SDK) with new features and enhancements. In the coming weeks, we will be adding 3D and sound to AmigaDE.
There are many more exciting things happening at Amiga and I look forward to sharing with you all of the great details, and announcements in Koln, Germany in December. I look forward to meeting all of you there, at the Amiga World tradeshow. Bring a friend!
Looking forward to a great visit in Koln, and a wonderful holiday season,
Bill McEwen and the rest of the Amiga team.

AGE and Metal Combat
AGE (Advanced Graphics Environment) is an AGA + game graphics library for Amos
programmers, that we were working on a number of years ago. It's not complete,
and it's not likely to be, so we've decided to release it as it is. Also, we've
released our "Metal Combat" speed test engine and source for what was to be a
simple A1200 Virtual Fighter clone, that we were working on in '95. Note it's
NOT a game, just an engine demo, it was possible. We just could make the
characters at that time. Maybe somebody else can do that today...

Amiga: AmigaOne Forum closes on December 1st, 2000
In the recent days and in several cases, a large number of insults were posted
on the discussion boards of Amiga Inc. To protect Amiga Inc.'s reputation, the
board will be closed on December 1st, 2000 for indefinite time. It is recommended
to switch over to the discussions at amiga.org.
We recommend on this occasion of course our own discussion boards.

News about the WoA 2000
- Hourly presentations
- Seminars on OS 3.9, hardware, software
The official letter which is currently sent out by Haage & Partner to
10,000 customers:
Dear customers,
dear Amiga friends
A tradition continues. You still keep faith with your Amiga. It's time that the
Amiga market gets a boost. Help to strengthen the Amiga market and visit
the World of Amiga in the heart of Cologne.
We have decided at short notice, and moved heaven and earth, to present you
the new AmigaOS 3.9 in time for Christmas.
To give the fair a professional but also comfortable setting - the town hall in
Neuss was already occupied -, we went back to the "Cologne tradition"
and discovered a new location: the centrally located MediaPark is
futuristic, offers a comfortable atmosphere and above all the required technology.
Car parks are available in the underground car park below. In the building there
also is a restaurant.
The fair takes place in Saal (300 qm) and Foyer (180 qm) of the Mediapark
No. 7. Two more rooms in the next building offer space for presentations. We
try hard to make the fair as interesting as possible for you.
Take the chance - we'll anticipate your visit!

What is MorphOS?
David 'zapek' Gerber, one of the 'Vapor' programmers, explains in his .plans
statement of today what MorphOS is. He clearly describes why MorphOS is far
more than a simple 68k emulator. He makes clear that it's rather a full-blown
operating system on its own, which fulfills all demands on a modern OS.

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
We don't have a press release for perhaps the most important bit of
news in some time. This is the retirement of Petro Tyschtschenko. The
German office of Amiga will be closed by the end of the year. In our
opinion, there would be no Amiga at all if it weren't for Petro's
tireless promotion and work during the worst of the hiatus after the
death of Commodore. Whether his organization was called Amiga
Technologies, Amiga International GMBH, Amiga Germany or any other
name that might have been used, the heart and soul of our community
dwelt where Petro was for many years. We owe him a lot and we'll miss
him.
Another item we didn't receive a press release for is the "ending" of
YAM, perhaps the most popular mailer ever for the Amiga computer. The
program's author, Marcel Beck, has decided to discontinue development.
He as released the source code through the GNU General Public License
though, so a future for this marvelous program is possible. We hope
someone picks it up and runs with it.
Sometimes you just can't win for losing. Last month's issue went out
with a letter from a reader who was, rightly, unhappy about a
Microsoft ad on the top of AU. We pointed out the ad was placed there
by our free distribution service, e-Groups, which retains the right to
include any ads it chooses in return for providing its services free.
Almost as if someone were having a joke at our expense, that issue
also went to you readers with the exact same ad included! Two months
in a row. I sincerely hope this issue arrives in your e-mail box with
something less irritating attached.
The service we use is first rate, reliable, and as professional an
organization as we've ever worked with. This is the first time one of
their ads has caused such consternation, so we are not prepared to
abandon them. Since we have no control over these ads, and don't even
see them until after the issue is sent, it could easily happen again.
We hope it won't.
Another feud in the Amiga Community is brewing, and again it involves
the very innovative company Elbox. We attempt to sort it out for you
in the feuders' own words below. It should be obvious to everyone we
don't need such things, regardless of the merits of anyone's position.
We'll try to keep you posted on developments in this tasteless mess.
Innovation abounds in this issue. Read the very interesting proposal
from Bob Sharp, the force behind the Amiga 2K show in St. Louis, USA.
If you're involved with an Amiga club, there's a real treat in store
for you if you participate.
Many interesting things for you this issue - we hope you enjoy it.

fierce amd only by either shutting down the syjet or disconnecting the
cable will it release the buss. Also I can no longer do a warm reboot.
I have disabled all the wbstartup softeware in an attempy to fix this.
but to no avail. Any thoughts anyone?? Keep up the good work! Yours in

October 21, 2000
Dear Amiga Family:
I am writing this as I fly back from a wonderful two days at the ACE
2000 Amiga show in Melbourne, Australia. It was indeed a great delight
and pleasure to meet with all the wonderful members of the Amiga
Family Down Under, and I already look forward to my next opportunity
to visit Australia.
I especially want to thank all the dealers, developers and end users
who attended the seminars and the hundreds of you who joined for the
banquet dinner. Amiga truly is a global family, and too much of an
unknown phenomena. It is the Amiga Family who has kept this amazing
system alive and growing.
I would like to take a moment to recognize the efforts of two people
who especially made my stay in Australia an enjoyable and educational
experience. Jeff Rose, of Unitech, the d'Amiga distributor for
Australia, and Basil Flinter the Secretary of the Amiga Down Under
Group or ADUG. I want to thank them both for taking the extra time to
help me truly understand what Australia and New Zealand mean to Amiga,
and what Amiga can do to help our its Family Down Under. I can
certainly say that on my next trip I will take the time to also visit
New Zealand and say hello in person.
Upcoming Products
There are many exciting things happening with Amiga and I wanted to
tell the entire Amiga community what the attendees of ACE 2000 learned
at the show.
Amiga will release an upgrade for the Classic AmigaOS! Version 3.9 of
the AmigaOS will be shipped and ready for the 2000 holiday season.
AmigaOS 3.9 is being developed in concert with Haage and Partner GmbH.
A new website devoted specifically to OS3.9 will be online shortly and
it will include an OS feature list and other bits of useful
information. OS 3.9 will be made available to classic Amiga users for
the affordable price of under $40.00 US. Watch our main website,
www.amiga.com, for more details of OS 3.9 and its new website.
Because Amiga is still a Benevolent Dictatorship-and not a democracy
or even a republic-we listen closely to the feedback and input from
the community. Based on this feedback we strive to create products
that you want, need and enjoy.
We are pleased to announce to the community the first in a series of
new hardware that has been designed by Amiga and soon manufactured by
Amiga OEM partners. The first in our AmigaONE series of products are
the AmigaONE PPC 1200, and the AmigaONE PPC 4000 cards from Eyetech.
These products will become available to developers in December this
year and are designed to meet the specific needs of the Amiga
Community. We have also announced another partner, bPlan GmbH, who are
creating a new AmigaONE PPC based desktop computer.
More details will emerge shortly about bPlan, Eyetech and the new
AmigaONE products, so visit the AmigaONE web site at
www.amiga.com/products/one/pr.shtml to stay informed.
I would also like to announce new versions of the Amiga SDK. AmigaSDK
version 1.1 will begin shipping on October 24, 2000. In addition to an
upgrade for the Linux version, we are please to release the Windows
version of the Amiga SDK as well.
There was a mistake in the September 28 Executive Update. As
erroneously printed in the update, the Amiga SDK 1.1 does not include
the sound, UI, or 3D pieces. These will be found in version 1.2, which
itself will be released shortly. I am sorry for the error, but take
comfort in the fact that purchasers of an Amiga SDK receive free
updates and upgrades for 12 months from the date of purchase.
Possible Amiga Community Investment Opportunity:
Another announcement made in Melbourne was the possibility of a
Registration A filing for Amiga. Since the announcements of the Amiga
Inc. plan and strategy, we have continually received questions and
offers of investing in Amiga.
We at Amiga have been trying to find ways to give something back for
all of your efforts and continued faith in what we are doing. We are
investigating a method where we can offer 10% of Amiga to the
community in a Registration A filing. We have not decided on whether
or not we are going to do this, but to date we have investigated many
opportunities and this looks to be a great option.
We are investigating this in earnest, but before we continue down
this path much further we wanted to see what the community thought
about the idea. We have established an email address at
investor@amiga.com where members of the Amiga community can send us a
message with their interest. We are looking for no less than $250.00
US per investment. If you are interested please send an email message
along with the dollar amount that you would be interested in
investing.
Each country has its own rules about Registration A filings, so you
should check with local authorities to learn what rules may apply to
each of you. As with any investment there is associated risk, and
before anyone decides to invest we encourage them to read the plan,
prospectus, and inherent risks involved with this offer if it is
eventually implemented.
Closing
It has been an amazing 10 months since we started Amiga Incorporated.
The community has seen the delivery of the Amiga SDK, an upgrade to
the SDK, an upgrade to the Classic AmigaOS, and now the announcement
of three PPC based AmigaONE products. We still have a long way to go
and many more battles to fight, but I am confident that with the
community behind us, and the enhancements to the product line
continuing, there is a long and exciting future for Amiga.
To the user group members around the world, it is time to start
calling the members who have drifted away and let them know what is
happening with the new Amiga. We want them to know they can again be
part of continuing the legacy that is Amiga.
Again thanks to Greg, and Michael, and the thousands of other Amigans

To the Amiga Family:
I write to you today with heavy heart, as I announce the passing of a
member of the Amiga family: Bob Cosby.
Bob, or Coz as I often yelled it out, was always a smiling supportive
team member. Coz was always here to encourage and support the team and
our efforts.
As frustrations would flare, or concerns arose Coz was there in the
middle of it helping to keep the sanity.
It was Coz who was first to offer his opinions, and today the office
is quieter and we miss him very much.
Coz was planning and bringing up his Harley, and he and I were
planning on a long ride through the mountains next year with our
wives.
Well, Coz, I look forward to our ride another time.
My prayers, and heart felt condolences go out to his wife and his
family.
We at Amiga dedicate the AmigaOne to Coz.
I would ask the members of the Amiga Family to pray for Marsha, his
wife, and always remember Coz.
Mr. Cosby - I miss you.

Oct 30, 2000, Snoqualmie, WA - Amiga Inc., developer of multi-media,
multi-platform digital environments announced the release today of its
software development kit for Microsoft WindowsTM.
The Amiga Software Developers Kit provides the initial tools and
examples for developers to create applications that can run on
desktops, information appliances, set top boxes, PDAs, and game
systems without modification. Amiga uses Virtual Processor (VP)
technology to erase the boundaries that separate different hardware
architectures. Once a program is written, the same binary will run on
every platform that Amiga supports. Software Developers running
Microsoft WindowsTM can focus on developing applications instead of
porting to different platforms.
Amiga Digital Environment Graphical Interface running on Microsoft
Windows
For developers, the new SDK creates a single environment that is
scalable from handheld devices such as cell phones to multiprocessor
servers. Current and future versions will enable compact, high
performance and robust media solutions to be used across a broad range
of devices using identical binary files. The New Amiga SDK is
available through local retailers for $99.00 and from the Amiga web
site.
"Amiga is committed to delivering operating environments to a
plethora of platforms. The Amiga SDK for Windows is an opportunity to
deliver a development environment to a large community that creates
applications and for that community to deliver applications to
different markets with no additional development costs," said Amiga
Product Manager Matt Fontenot.
"We are very excited to be able to add Windows developers to the
thousands of Linux developers already creating content for the new
Amiga," said Bill McEwen, CEO of Amiga.
Amiga Digital Environment Command Line Interface running on Microsoft
Windows
Amiga based applications can run directly on x86, PowerPC, M Core,
ARM, StrongARM, MIPS R3000, R4000, R5000, SH 3, SH4, and NEC V850
processors. The Amiga OS can run hosted on Linux, Embedded Linux,
Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT, CE, QNX4, OS/9, and soon Palm, EPOC,
VxWorks, and others.

Amigans,
We are requesting your assistance.
Since the completion of the fantastic Amgia 2K show, in St. Louis
this last March 31st - April 2, I've hit upon an idea that will help
Amiga Clubs even more.
To do this project properly, I need to acquire the names and
addresses of all the Amgia Clubs I can, including a contact person and
phone number where possible. I already have a good number, but I don't
want to miss anyone.
I know this is a little work for you, but it will greatly help all
the Amiga Clubs, and I would certainly appreciate your assistance.
So please take the time to fill in this note and email it back to me
with as many ACCURATE club names and information as you can. Please
fill it in as completely as possible.
To all of you who have helped so far, many thanks.

This project involves placing each qualified club on a list to
receive the new Bounce-back Video tapes free of charge. The first tape
was of the Amiga 2K Banquet. The second tape was titled "Nova Design &

and information on SoftLogiks PageStream program. Sign your club up
and get on the list to receive the future tapes free.*
These tapes are for Amiga Clubs to use as a demos at their meetings.
It is expensive to do this, so I ask my fellow Amigans to send only
real club information. Don't send for a tape just for yourself, or you
will deprive other Amigans the ability to receive one. I have a
limited number of tapes, and wish to get them into the hands of as
many clubs as possible. Each club will be contacted by phone before
tapes are mailed.
We currently are distributing tapes to over 150 clubs in the U.S.A.

Elbox comments on AmigaONE 1200/4000
A few days ago, Amiga Inc. proposed the direction, in which the Amiga
Classic computer line should evolve.
This direction assumes the necessity of equipping Amiga Classic
computers with PCI-standard slots, the G3 or G4 processor with fast
SDRAM memory and a slot for a the Next Generation MATROX graphic card.
In order to fully use the new AmigaDE system, Amiga Classic must be
fitted with several basic pieces of equipment.
The AmigaONE 1200 idea assumes connection of this hardware directly
to the CPU expansion slot in Amiga 1200.
We are really glad to inform all the owners of Amiga Classic
computers that this is exactly the way, for which Elbox was the
pathfinder in their designing and marketing of the MEDIATOR PCI 1200
busboard.
The most important thing is the proper decision of following our path
and connecting the new busboard to the CPU slot in Amiga 1200 -- not
to local connectors in turbo cards. The latter would result in some
limitations (see our previous announcement of 21 Sep 2000).
MEDIATOR PCI vs. AmigaONE 1200/4000
The basic differences between AmigaONE 1200 and MEDIATOR PCI
1200 are as follows:
AmigaONE 1200 MEDIATOR PCI 1200
* connection to A1200 edge * connection to A1200 edge
connector connector
* six PCI slots * four PCI slots
* No * logic for supporting A1200
68k & 68k/PPC turbo card
* logic to connect A1200 * logic to connect A1200
motherboard motherboard
* No * five ZORRO II slots, one Video
slot (with MEDIATOR ZIV
& ZIV busboard)
* PowerPC G3/G4 processor * PowerPC G3/G4 processor
(on Macintosh-type card) (on SharkPPC/SharkPPC+)
* two SDRAM sockets for * two SDRAM sockets for up to 1 GB
up to 512 MB memory memory (on SharkPPC/SharkPPC+)
* one AGP slot * one AGP slot (on SharkPPC+)
* USB 1.0 & FastEthernet * USB 2.0 & FastEthernet
& UDMA/EIDE/ATAPI & UDMA/EIDE/ATAPI
(on custom PCI card) (on SharkPPC+)
The basic shortcoming of the AmigaONE 1200 project is that its
designers will not implement logic for AmigaONE 1200 working with 68k
and 68k/PPC turbo cards. Such implementation would require expanding
AmigaONE 1200 logic and, most of all, its designers having knowledge
of the technical intricacies of the design of all the currently
available turbo cards.
This means that AmigaONE 1200 in the Amiga Classic mode will provide
calculation capacity of the 68020 14 MHz processor at the most.
MEDIATOR PCI 1200 has no such limitation.
All types of Amiga turbo cards (in the Amiga Classic mode) can work
at full speed in connection with cards installed in MEDIATOR PCI 1200
slots.
All the currently available Amiga software may be executed in the 68k
(or PPC) processor of any Amiga turbo card.
In new applications to be developed, both accelerators in MEDIATOR
PCI (68k/PPC and SharkPPC) may enhance performance of each other just
the same way as it is done in advanced multi-processor systems. This
is due to the fact that processors in both accelerators work fully
simultaneously.
In both solutions (MEDIATOR PCI 1200 and AmigaONE 1200), irrespective
of the Classic mode, running Amiga Classic programmes will also be
possible in the emulation mode in PowerPC G3 and G4 processors.
The hardware compatibility from the side of G3/G4 processors in both
solutions guarantees that the entire range of software written for the
new AmigaDE operational system will work on MEDIATOR PCI.
MEDIATOR technology, unlike other technologies-to-be, is NOW
available for you to have and enjoy.
Now something special for A4000 users:
As many of you already know, we are now in the final stage of work on
the MEDIATOR PCI 4000 card. Here is the comparison of capacities
offered by MEDIATOR PCI 4000 and AmigaONE 4000.
AmigaONE 4000 MEDIATOR PCI 4000
* connection to A4000D CPU * connection to A4000D Expansion
connector Bus Connector
* six PCI slots * five PCI slots
* No * logic for supporting
A4000 68k & 68k/PPC turbo card
* logic to connect A4000 * logic to connect A4000
motherboard motherboard
* No * seven ZORRO III/II slots
& one Video slot
* PowerPC G3/G4 processor * PowerPC G3/G4 processor
* USB 1.0 & FastEthernet * USB 2.0 & FastEthernet
& UDMA/EIDE/ATAPI & UDMA/EIDE/ATAPI
(on custom PCI card) (on SharkPPC+)
Please expect our further releases:
- Development progress of Voodoo3, Sound and TV PCI card drivers
for MEDIATOR PCI 1200.
- The MEDIATOR development line (A4000 and A3000).
- Full specification of the SharkPPC+ card: the ultimate performance
card in the SharkPPC family.

15 November P96 "patch" VooDoo Mediator Drivers Not 'legal'
There was a message posted on one of the Mediator mailing list from
the Main author of P96:
"Hi, there is no Voodoo3 driver for Picasso96, because Elbox has
obviously created and actually _distributed_ one without any
permission from us. We will not support this driver in any way unless
Elbox legalizes this driver. Be prepared to have new Picasso96
releases that won't work at all with Mediator hardware installed.
Sorry, but we can not just let this happen... Regards, Alexander
Kneer." - I got 2 emails today from someone that had emailed the P96
authors and it says the same things.
A quick look at the P96 homepage, on the Distribution page has the
following information:
"Developing software for Picasso96 is free, development of Picasso96
hardware drivers is restricted to non-commercial projects, old
hardware or - if a licence is obtained from the authors - new hardware
products. We reserve the right to decide whether to provide support
for a certain project or not. Writing and issuing hardware drivers
without the written approval of the Picasso96 authors will not be
tolerated. Licensing Companies that want to sell graphics cards or
other products with Picasso96 as the core driver system must license
Picasso96 from: Kneer & Abt GbR. Masurenweg 6a D-89233 Neu-Ulm Germany
The licence fees are based on the complexity of the product and the
number of units sold. We request about 3 to 5 per cent of the retail
price with a minimum of about DM 10."

1. The latest Elbox driver for the Voodoo3 chipset is a proprietary
and independent software solution written by Elbox programmers,
without any support or help on part of any outside team of
programmers, developers or companies.
2. All legal rights for the Voodoo3 driver are property of Elbox
Computer company. Actually, P96 authors did not acquire rights for
this software (although our driver provides added value to P96, no
doubt). We are open to further negotiations.
3. The Voodoo3 ver. 1.0 driver (available now for MEDIATOR PCI
registered users) is 100% compatible with the P96 graphic system.
4. Elbox does not distribute P96 software, which is available from
other sources, e.g. from Amiga OS 3.5 CD-ROMs.
5. P96 is shareware, paid by the users. Elbox provides expanded
capacities for P96 and as for now does not want to be paid for it from
P96 authors (the Voodoo3 driver is free for registered users of
MEDIATOR PCI).
6. Development of Elbox Voodoo3 drivers will be continued and updated
and they will be made compatible with OTHER graphic systems, too.
7. If the P96 authors team decide to try to make efforts to block
MEDIATOR operation with future P96 graphic system releases (strange
enough, as Elbox drivers indirectly helps P96 authors in their own
business...), Elbox will provide a completely NEW, modern and
expandable graphic system (soon...).
8. Drivers for other graphic chipsets are under development now and
will be provided by Elbox.
9. Support for all the drivers written by Elbox team of programmers
IS and will be provided by Elbox Computer.
10. Every user of MEDIATOR, who wants to use any graphic card based
around a chipset supported by Elbox, will be free to choose which
graphic system to use... and then pay the appropriate shareware fee if
this is P96.

The AmigaOne 1200 & 4000, the Predator, GRex and Mediator boards - A
factual clarification of similarities and differences
For immediate release
We believe that all of the above products - including the Mediator -
represent very worthwhile expansion options for Classic Amiga users.
However each of the above products has been designed to give the
Classic Amiga user specific and quite different expansion and forward
progression capabilities, and it is therefore important to note that
these different product lines are not functionally interchangeable and
the type selected should be carefully chosen with regard to the
Amiga's current and intended future use.
This brief note is to highlight the differences in these product
lines by outlining the basic specifications of the Predator, G-Rex and
AmigaOne 1200/4000 products and how their design philosophy differs
both from each other and from the Mediator board from Elbox. For the
sake of clarification the summary information on the Mediator board
given here has been taken from public press releases and
advertisements published by Elbox over the past few months.
Finally please note that we continue to refuse to get drawn into any
unprofessional and public arguments with Elbox over their reaction to
any products which are even vaguely competitive to their Mediator
design. There are however some misleading inaccuracies in their press
release of 30 October 2000 which this note will also help clear up.
The AmigaOne 1200 & 4000 are 6xPCI + 1xAGP stand-alone G3/G4 boards
capable of running the Amiga DE directly (which is being ported to the
design by Amiga Inc). These boards are designed to fit in the most
popular A1200/A4000 tower systems, and optionally connect to the
A1200/A4000 motherboard for access to Classic Amiga chipset hardware.
In this mode the AmigaOne 1200/4000 can also be used to run the
Classic Amiga OS & software with a very high degree of compatibility -
because it has access to all the Classic Amiga custom chips.
It is however of fundamental importance to note that the A1200/A4000
'computer' now resides on the AmigaOne board - having direct
high-speed access to all the AmigaOne's PCI/AGP peripherals, and only
accessing the existing A1200/A4000 chipset (via the A1200 edge
connector or the A4000 cpu connector) as and when required. Any
existing 680x0 or PPC accelerator is entirely redundant, its function
being carried out by the AmigaOne's G3/G4 cpu & memory. For this
reason the provision of a pass-through accelerator slot on either the
A1200 or A4000 version of the AmigaOne is completely pointless. In our
view a small cardboard box provides much more cost-effective storage
for an unused accelerator card than an expensive edge connector.
For entirely hardware independent (retargetable) applications the
AmigaOne 1200/4000 hardware is capable of running them without an
A1200 or A4000 motherboard being attached at all.
The Predator and GRex boards (which are of similar - but not
identical - design) add PCI (& AGP in the case of the Predator-Plus)
facilities to an Amiga 1200 or 4000 with a phase5/DCE design of PPC
(or Cyberstorm Mk3) accelerator. These boards use the phase5
accelerator's local bus (which is not itself a PCI bus) graphics card
connector to give a high speed interface between cpu and PCI/AGP
slots. This has been implemented by using a custom-designed
'northbridge' chip on the Predator itself. The Predator also makes use
of other logic on the accelerator to interface to the Amiga
motherboard's onboard chipset & peripherals.
Using this local bus allows full linear addressing of the PCI/AGP
cards within the cpu's address space, and allows busmastering and DMA
to be implemented not just between PCI/AGP cards but between the cards
and the accelerator card's onboard memory. This design does not
require the use of any paging registers for data transfer between cpu
and PCI board, and removes any contention between the lower speed
A1200 edge connector bus (which is used exclusively for accessing the
Amiga's onboard peripherals and chipset resources) and the high speed
local bus (which is used exclusively for PCI/AGP access).
In addition the Predator-Plus also has provisi on for an on-board
G3/G4 cpu and SDRAM memory to provide a user-installable PPC
accelerator uprade.
Unlike the AmigaOne 1200/4000 the Predator and GRex boards need an
A1200/A4000 motherboard and appropriate BizzardPPC / CyberstormPPC /
Cyberstorm Mk3 accelerator installed to function.
The Mediator board from Elbox, was, in our understanding, originally
designed to be a PCI-only replacement for the Zorro II-based Z4
busboard from Apollo, primarily to allow the use of low cost PCI
graphics cards in an A1200. As with the Predator & GRex boards above,
the Mediator was not designed to run the native Amiga DE.
The Elbox design uses a bespoke paged memory mapper to allow
compatibility with all A1200 accelerators (providing they are fast
enough to drive the graphics card) and transfers all data - both to
the PCI and Amiga's on board peripherals/chipset resources - over the
A1200 edge connector bus. For its originally intended market (ie to
provide a towered A1200 with PCI sots) this is certainly a workable
option.
Since the Eyetech's original Predator announcement in September 2000
Elbox have announced a variety of add-on/upgrade cards for the
Mediator, to - we understand - provide it with superficially similar
facilities to those embodied in the design of the Predator. However -
as we understand it - these upgrades will still rely on (paged) cpu
and memory access from the existing Amiga accelerator over the A1200
edge connector.
Elbox have also recently announced an A4000 version of the Mediator
which, we understand, basically uses the same technology as the A1200
version but physically connects via the Zorro bus using the 8MB Zorro
II address space for a paged PCI memory interface.
We hope this helps clear up the differences between these three
significant upgrade products for Classic Amiga computers.

SURVIVOR ORG. to take over the Amiga branch of CS&E
After recent announcements by David Connolly, managing director of
Crystal Software and Electronics, that he will no longer be active in
the Amiga market, Survivor Org. has acquired the rights to past,
present and future Amiga games from CS&E. Managing director of
Survivor Org. is Dirk Harlaar.
Currently the educational program Cosmos Fun Class is being finished
and translated into different languages, to reach an audience larger
than only the English speaking world. On the final CD there will also
be some "bonusses" by the develloper of Cosmos Fun Class.
Survivor Org. will focus on Amiga games only, although PC conversions
may appear on "multi format" CD's, in cooperation with CS&E. Multi
format CD's (with PC and Amiga versions of the same game) have the
benefit that they wouldn't have to cost as much as Amiga only games,
since the profit on the PC-platform is just that little bit higher
than on the Amiga market. It also has the added bonus for our
customers, that they only have to buy a game once, and will be able to
play it on their Amiga at home, and the PC in the office (don't do
this when your boss is watching you!). In these first days of running
this business, I got the rights to two conversions of PC-games, and am
negotiating a third game. Details are still sketchy at the moment, but
I will keep you all informed about it when we have more solid
information.
All the best,
-------------
Dirk Harlaar
Managing Director

{The following announcement was made by David Connolly of CS&E on
October 28. Brad.}
Dear friends, maintaining a commercial business in the Amiga market
has become increasingly difficult. I don't just mean in terms of the
poor sales, but in terms of maintaining professional communication and
business relationships. I don't feel I am able to offer a truly
professional service for the Amiga as I have failed on both these
counts. I have made inproper comments on mailing lists and failed to
attract developers to sign for CS&E.
As I have made the announcement before that CS&E would leave the
classic Amiga but come back for the next generation, it is with regret
that I have to say this time the company is leaving the Amiga to
concentrate on the PC development.
Amiga Survivor will be continuing as a non-profit making magazine
through the editorial staff but CS&E will continue to lend a hand in
taking orders. I wish the Amiga all the best and will be keeping a
very close eye on all the developments as an eager customer."

Hyperion Entertainment and Titan Computer are pleased to announce
that they will be bringing Cyberlore Studios' critically acclaimed God
sim "Majesty: the Fantasy Kingdom Sim" to the Amiga.
MajestyTM is a unique sim putting you in the crushed velvet hotseat
of your own kingdom. With an epic quest before you, you make the
decisions of where to build your settlement's guilds and temples. From
these you recruit a varied cast of larger-than-life heroes. Each one
has a mind of his own and must be enticed to meet your goals, via
rewards you offer and spells you cast. Meanwhile you must make sure
that your treasury stays flush with cash to support these and other
outlays necessary to maintain a thriving medieval town. The fact that
you are being barraged by attacks from mythical beasts and fantastic
creatures doesn't make your job any easier.
"We are very excited by the prospect of bringing such an outstanding
God sim to the Amiga, the machine where the genre was born all these
years ago with Populous", says Ben Hermans, managing partner of
Hyperion Entertainment. "The people at Cyberlore Studios have been
very cooperative and our partners at Tribsoft, who are handling the
Linux version, have been instrumental in making the Amiga port happen.
We promised to expand on the genres we were offering to Amiga users
and here we are."
Majesty will be published for Amiga and Linux by Titan Computer and
is slated for release in early Q1 of 2001. A PPC equipped Amiga
(supported through WarpOS), at least 48 MB of memory, a graphics-card
and around 300MB of harddrive space will be required. The possibility
of a 68060 and AGA version is under review.
Majesty is a trademark of Cyberlore Studios. All other trademarks and
tradenames belong to their respective owners.

Picasso96 Developers talk about Voodoo3 Drivers
On the CyberGFX site
a press release, and
several postings from the P96 mailing list has been published in which the developers of
Picasso96, Tobias Abt and Alexander Kneer, voice about the unauthorized Voodoo3 Picasso96 driver
from Elbox, and the future of the graphics driver system.
The Picasso96 license allows the development of new and commercial drivers only if one has obtained
a license. Besides the shareware fee this represents an important source of income. According to the
developers of P96 they received only a hand full of shareware registrations during the past two years,
which doesn't warrant intensive P96 development and along with this abdication of free time.
According to the developers of P96 Elbox had got in contact with them in reference to Voodoo3 drivers, and
had asked for the developer kit for P96. This request has been replyed to that effect of that this
kit is available for a fee. From the point of view of the P96 developers this fee was reasonable. But Elbox
stopped communication after this offer and developed the unauthorized Voodoo3 driver. The P96 developers
now are still hoping to come to terms with Elbox.
Further development of Picasso96 continues independent from this. At this time it is being worked on
implementation of the changes sent in by Thomas Richter. Furthermore other software and hardware drivers are
under development on which nothing in detail can be said at this time, cause among other things third parties
are involved in this.
The press release deals in more detail with the here in short mentioned items. More information are inside the
mailing list postings.

Possible Failure of Melody1200
It is possible that some Melody1200PRO of the last line has been delivered with a failure. A confusion of
the "Logic" which is in the central controlling chip of the board with the "Logic" of a following board is
the reason for it.
Perhaps it is therefore not possible to play RAW-audio with these boards. But the work with MPEG would not
be influenced.
Unfortunately it is not known if there are other board with this bug, except of one board which has already
been re-programmed again. Everybody who notices this failure with his/her board should mail to
KATODEV before sending in the board.

Cinemaware publishes "Robin Hood: Defender of the Crown"
A well-known game is to start its comeback on Playstation 2, Microsofts X-Box, and Windows-PC.
Cinemaware will publish "Robin Hood: Defender of the Crown" in spring of 2002. The game bases on the
classical game "Defender of the Crown" from 1986. In all the mix of strategy and action was sold over
one million times on several platforms as on Amiga, too.
The revised version is set to the time of the "Avenger of the disinherited ones". You have to release
England from the clutches of the villain prince John.
In a mail one of the responsible persons said that the game possibly will be ported to AmigaPPC if there
is enough interest.

About BBoAH - Amiga-Society - responsible: Horst
Diebel
10.09.2001 - The Amig Society was initially meant to be part of a cluster of three
sites, each of which would fullfill a different role. According to that plan, the
'Society' would have offered users and dealers the possibility to present themselves and
their projects. But as the other two sites didn't get developed any further, the
maintainers are about to integrate sections for hardware and software. This is how the
German translation of the "Big Book of Amiga Hardware"
came to be part of the Amiga Society, and now a similar approach is used for the
"Little Book of Amiga Software".
About Big Book of Amiga Hardware - responsible: Ian Chapman
This project was started by Ian Chapman on January 17th, 1999. With support from many users,
an extensive database of information about various Amiga hardware expansions, models
and peripherals was created. In addition to the English main site, there's a french translation
which isn't actively maintained right now aswell as a German mirror which translates the contents
to the German language step by step.
About Diskmag.de - responsible: Lars 'Ghandy'
Sobiraj
30.04.2002 - Diskmag.de tries to be a portal for friends of scenerelated diskmagazines,
no matter on which platform they come out. For your pleasure, we (Ghandy &
Zito) offer a big archive of articles, reports and interviews from various
magazines, just like our slogan: "All your eyes can eat!"
If you're missing friends you were in contact with many years ago, you
will (hopefully) find their valid url or email in our database.
In collaboration with the Swiss Scene Server we offer downloads especially
for the fans of the Amiga and PC demoscene. If that all isn't enough for
you (or your eyes), you can directly follow the ongoings in our newsarea
and leave a comment if you want.
About Amiga Arena - responsible: Olaf
Köbnik
01.05.2002 - Since 1998 the Amiga Arena tries to support the Amiga Shareware and Freeware scene.
With time-limited price reductions on Shareware software were used to create new impulses und
strengthen the bond between developers and users.
In addition to this, the Amiga Arena tries to create a 'bridge' between developers and users
by publishing interviews with various people from the Amiga scene.
Last but not least, Amiga Arena is trying to convince former shareware developers to release their titles
for free and offers games and quality software for free download.

notified on June 21st, 1967 by the Stanford Research Institute, for that the
US-patent 3,541,541 was given on the November 17th, 1970 under the title "X- Y

amiga-news.de Changing Server - The Odyssey
Everything was prepared to move to an own server, which we intended to share with
one of our partners. The interactive areas were closed. Durability of name-server entries
was set to 5 minutes, to be able to switch to the new server at prompt.
But then problems on the new server increased. The server crashed and temporary was not reachable.
The in the meantime applied change of domain data from our former provider KDT to our houser IPX
hit on Saturday, 12 November and flooded the still defective server. That caused the new server
to crash completely. Also e-mail related things were not set up at that time. As then we had to
take the entire computer offline for debugging and re-installation, we decided that our partner
will take over the entire server and we would look for another hoster. This hoster is to be Marc Albrecht
(ACT-Net), whom we thank for his quick help.
There we are running a new virtual server now. Documents for another change of domain data are
ready. We are hoping to be able to finally re-start within the next week.

amiga-news.de Changing Server
Notes:
Because we are moving to another server at this time not all of the areas are working, yet.
For the time being we completely disabled the interactive part of amiga-news.de for easier
fault finding. Unfortunately currently the newsticker and mailing lists are not working, too.
Supplement 16 Nov 2000:
Unfortunately the new server appears to have a hardware defect. Because of that we are moving again. We are hoping
that amiga-news.de will be reachable again within one or two days. Please, wish us luck :-)

Amiga SDK for Windows - Software Development Kit
Amiga is back again with the new SDK (Software Development Kit), which enables
developers to create truely portable applications, entertainment software or
utilities. This SDK relieves you from working conventionel and platform dependent, and
takes a giant step in digital medias.
Hosted on a Windows system the SDK contains the revolutionary Amiga Foundation Layer,
developer tools for C, pJava, and the unbelievable VP (virtual processor), as well as
hundreds of documentation pages. The Amiga Foundation Layer is the first product to give
you a first glimps at the digital world of tomorrow at enormous speed, extended multimedia
capabilities, and outstanding binary portability.
If you are a software developer, if you own a x86 system, and if you find those
all-the-time-all-the-same old models of operating-systems boring, then this might
become the beginning of a new life for you.
Important: This product is only meant for use on PCs with x86 processor and an already
installed Windows!

RC5-Client V2.8011 Build 464b
On 10 November 2000 version 2.8011 Build 464b of the RC5-client for Amiga was released.
Along with bugfixes and enhancements speed of the version for PPC processors for OGR has
been optimised. Now the client is up to 39% faster on 603e, and up to 70% faster on 604e.
All users of PPC once again can deal with cracking of OGR-24- and OGR-25- sections pass 2,
which are spread now. Sections which have not been cracked yet belong to these. OGR-26 will
be spread if the newly released sections of pass 2 are entirely processed. Furthermore the
statistics are online again.

Demo Version v44.40 of the HSMathLibs for MC68040/060
Matthias Henze wrote:
After a very long time there is a "new" demo version. This version corresponds
to the full version v44.40 from 30.01.1999. Only the installer script and the
manuals, which are available in 14 languages, got a rework.
I've decided to release this little older version because everytime soon after
the release of a new demo version a cracked version of this was available.
To give the honest users a small advantage over the crackers and software pirates
the v44.41 will be available ONLY to registered users for the time being.

Amiga Archive: Download via HTTP Recommended
Patrick Roberts (Web-Server "zAMilo") has recommended on the Open Amiga mailing list
to use the HTTP protocol for downloads of the Amiga archive. Downloads via HTTP
have the advantage of being counted and displayed directly on this page.
He himself and probably other programmers, too, orientate their priorities for
the software development along these numbers.
At the moment there are many games in the Top 10 of the downloads.
For him this means to concentrate on games for , as this is the software genre
which is most wanted by the people.

Amiga: Information about SHEEP
Gary Peake has posted some information about SHEEP on the Open Amiga mailing
list. SHEEP is a programming language in development by Wouter van Oortmerssen
(Amiga E) specially for AmigaDE.
The language can be used as interpreter and as compiler language (VP-code). The
speed of the compiled code is said to be comparable to that of C++/Java.
The pattern matching of SHEEP won't be restricted to strings but can be used on
every data structure. For this the language will contain an own variant for the
pattern matching. In addition to this the kn regular expressions (Perl) will
be supported. It is not decided until whether this will happen as a separate
feature or via utility functions.
The language will offer an interface to write extensions for SHEEP. This will
allow to write them in every language that supports the Amiga-Object-system, for
example VP-assembler or Ansi-C.
(VP is the virtual processor of the Amiga/TAO system)

Ovate seeks developers/consultants for leading-edge Internet development

A new Message about iFusion
Original message:
«We have encountered a few problems with the compiler we were using for
the Amiga. Today, H&P (makers of the compiler) are to email us a new
(corrected) version that should fix the problems that we have run into.
It came to the point where we could no longer make work-arounds for the
compiler errors.
We would like to publically thank H&P for their continued support of
this project! The Amiga version of iFUSION is the base code for the PC
port.»
