Status Quo: Summary about the issues regarding Pretory SA
During the last months the French press, among them l'Humanité (1, 2), Les Echos (1) and L'Expansion (1)
, reported several times about an insolvency of the American-French company
Pretory which is specialized to security services and employed for example security services for the Air France at airports.
The reports were claiming Pretory SA (France) was employing a stuff not sufficient trained or with too less proven reliability at the highly sensible area of security.
Inofficial sources are talking about wages not beeing paid since May 2003 for about 560 employees.
Bill Buck and Raquel Velasco are shareholders
and managers of the US company Pretory USA, which subsidiaries
Thendic France S.ā.r.l. and Thendic Deutschland GmbH are counted as precurors of the Pegasos distributor Genesi S.ā.r.l..
Thendic is running a court suit against Aminga Inc. since some time (amiga-news.de reported).
In a hearing of the Tribunal of Commerce in Paris last Monday, November the 17th 2003, according to Buck and Velasco at ANN.lu a sentence has been made which declares Pretory S.A. as bancrupt and calls a liquidation manager.
Due to that there is now a transfer of Thendic-France S.ā.r.l.'s assets to Genesi S.ā.r.l. possible. The issues will not affect Genesi in any kind else, Buck told.
We will keep on track about all news about this issue and report it here at
amiga-news.de and the AMIGAplus. (nba) (Translation: ub)

Genesi USA going to move principal office into Cheyenne Technology Corridor
As Genesi S.ā.r.l. announces, its American subsidiary Genesi USA is going to move its prinicipal office in January into the Northport building complex in Northern Las Vegas, which has been developed by the Jackson Shaw Company.
Please find the original press release below:
Cheyenne Technology Corridor
Continues to add High Tech Firms
North Las Vegas - Today, the Cheyenne Technology Corridor welcomed another high tech tenant. Genesi USA, a computer systems company, has agreed to terms with Northport, a Jackson Shaw development in the CTC. The company will move into its facility in January.
Genesi SARL, a Luxembourg based company, introduced the Pegasos in October 2003. Culminating over five years of development, the Pegasos is a high-performance PowerPC based modular MicroATX mainboard for use in a variety of applications, including desktops, workstations, servers and communications products. Based on industry standards, such as Open Firmware, the Pegasos supports multiple operating systems including varieties of Linux and BSD. The Pegasos is the first new hardware and operating system platform brought to market in many years. Pegasos computers run multiple operating systems, including MorphOS, a new non-UNIX based operating system, OpenBSD, the standard for security in operating systems and various distributions of Linux for the PowerPCŽ. Genesi has been designated as an IBM Business Partner and carries the Ready for IBM Technology mark on four of its products, PegasosPPC, PegXLin, MorphOS, and OpenBSD for PegasosPPC. Product details are available at <www.genesi.lu>. Genesi USA will be the focus of US computer assembly operations for Genesi.
When asked why Genesi USA chose the CTC as its new home, Paul Adams said, "After evaluating Nevada, Maine, Alabama, Florida and Texas as possible locations, we determined that the best overall business climate was in Southern Nevada. The other states offered many things, including free land for our facility and a year's worth of free rent; but, in the end, the favorable tax structure, the assistance of the City of North Las Vegas and the Community College of Southern Nevada provided a business climate that was much more supportive than anything we had seen in other states."
Mike Carroll, Vice President of Development for Jackson-Shaw said, "We are very proud to welcome Genisi USA to Northport. The CTC continues to thrive and add new businesses to the North Las Vegas economy. We look forward to more successes for the CTC."
Mike Majewski, who is the Economic Development Director for the City of North Las Vegas said, "It took a community-wide effort to secure Genesi in North Las Vegas, but the potential economic impacts to the CTC and all of Southern Nevada is phenomenal. This partnership between the City, real estate developers, and education was recently honored as the recipient of the Excellence in Economic Development award sponsored by the International Economic Development Council."
Through a public/private alliance, the Cheyenne Technology Corridor is bringing more technology businesses to Southern Nevada. The partnership includes the City of North Las Vegas, the Brennan Brothers, Jackson Shaw, RDS/Insight, LLC, Stoltz Management and Harsch Investment Properties.
The Cheyenne Technology Corridor is an integrated, accessible and diversified technology district offering advanced systems and infrastructure, state-of-the-art transportation and communication alternatives, and a knowledgeable and experienced workforce. (snx)

3-Wire Bus-Interface for Amiga
Carsten Siegener tells that he finished the first hardware test for the "3-Wire Businterface" for the Amiga. With this interface the Amiga is allowed
to read and control ICs with serial datatransfer. A very important group of ICs with this bus art are f.e. the 12bit analog-digitalchanger.
It was Carsten's aim to get an analog measuring recording for the amiga, which is useable on other systems. This ist the ground for him to think out the
3-Wire Interface, which you can put on your serial port of your computer.
The software speakes to the interface via the standard-APIs (serial.device), because of that it is possible to be used with the Pegasos or with the Amithlon.
There are many application areas to use such an interface, f.e. weather stations, alarm systems, etc. The interface was tested by the LTC-1292 (12bit ADC).
The software just exists as a simple test version with datalogging and debugging. It should be adapt to the LTC-1292 chip, where the software is for the
measuring recording.
A more exact scheme of the interface with the LTC1292 will be published shortly

New Unix ports from Diego Casorran
Once again, Diego Casorran (amiga.sourceforge.net)
ported a collection of assorted Unix tools and utilities to AmigaOS:
cURL v7.10.8
cURL is a client to get documents/files from or send documents to a server, using any of the supported protocols (HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, GOPHER, DICT, TELNET, LDAP or FILE). The command is designed to work without user interaction or any kind of interactivity. cURL offers a busload of useful tricks like proxy support, user authentication, ftp upload, HTTP post, SSL (https:) connections, cookies, file transfer resume and more.
Direct download
Wget v1.9.1
Wget is a free utility for non-interactive download of files from the Web. It supports HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP protocols, as well as retrieval through HTTP proxies.
It can follow links in HTML pages and create local versions of remote Web sites, fully recreating the directory structure of the original site. This is sometimes referred to as "recursive downloading." While doing that, Wget respects the Robot Exclusion Standard (/robots.txt). Wget can be instructed to convert the links in downloaded HTML files to the local files for offline viewing.
Direct download
ngIRCd v0.7.5
ngIRCd is an Open-Source server for the Internet Relay Chat (IRC), ngIRCd means "next generation IRC daemon", it's written from scratch and not deduced from the "grandfather of IRC daemons", the daemon of the IRCNet.
At present, the ngIRCd is under active development, some features are not implemented, some only partly. Till today (more or less complete) implemented IRC-commands:
ADMIN, AWAY, CHANINFO, CONNECT, DIE, DISCONNECT, ERROR, HELP, INVITE, ISON, JOIN, KICK, KILL, LINKS, LIST, LUSERS, MODE, MOTD, NAMES, NICK, NJOIN, NOTICE, OPER, PART, PASS, PING, PONG, PRIVMSG, QUIT, REHASH, RESTART, SERVER, SQUIT, STATS, TIME, TOPIC, TRACE, USER, USERHOST, VERSION, WHO, WHOIS.
Direct download
dbacl v1.5
dbacl is a command line program which can be used to categorize several types of text documents. Each document category is constructed as a maximum entropy language model, with respect to a reference measure based on digrams (character pairs).
Before recognition can take place, a number of text corpora must be "learned". For example, an English category could be based on a text file containing the collected works of Shakespeare. The Gutenberg project makes freely available many public domain works in electronic form.
After learning, any number of text files can be compared, in terms of Bayesian posterior probabilities, with up to 128 learned categories. The actual number of categories is limited only by available memory.
Direct download
gifsicle v1.40
Gifsicle twaddles GIF image files in a variety of ways. It is better than many of the freely available GIF twaddlers on the market -- for one thing, it has more options.
It supports merging several GIFs into a GIF animation; exploding an animation into its component frames; changing individual frames in an animation; turning interlacing on and off; adding transparency; adding delays, disposals, and looping to animations; adding or removing comments; flipping and rotation; optimizing animations for space; and changing images' colormaps, among other things. Extensive command-line options control which, if any, of these occur.

Court records of the trial Genesi vs. Amiga Inc. chronologically adapted
In a still running trial at the court Washington-West in Seattle, USA, has the German Thendic Electronic Components GmbH - respectively Genesi S.ā.r.l. as their legal successor they claim to be with reference to the trial about a licence agreement - brought an action on January, 2nd 2003 against Amiga Inc.
Sammy Nordström, known as "Samface", has now made for the first time the referring court records - as far as they are publicly available - freely available in chronological order.
The lawsuit is all about an OEM licence dated November 2000 in which Amiga Inc. committed themselves against the Thendic Electronic Components GmbH to adapt AmigaDE to their products Cashboy, Mobicash, transponder smart chip readers, Cashboy@Home and WindowsCE terminal (or "Smartboy").
The point at issue here seems to be the second paragraph of appendix A that follows after the product listing that reads as follows: "Thendic has the right with the consent of Amiga at any time to add new products to this list to thereby implicate Amiga's obligations under the Agreement to integrate the Licensed Software into such additional Thendic Products. Amiga will not unreasonably withhold constent to expand the list of Thendic Products."
Therefore has Amiga Inc. given Thendic the right to add further Thendic products to this list at any time with the consequence that AmigaDE would have to be adapted to those. Amiga Inc. commits themselves not to unreasonably withhold their consent to the addition of single such further products to Thendic.
The question to be solved by the judge may well be whether this OEM licence is valid for the at that time by the formerly Thendic-France S.ā.r.l. (now part of the Genesi group) exclusively world wide distributed PowerPC computer Pegasos or whether Amiga Inc. have the right to reject the adaption of AmigaDE to this product.
That Genesi S.ā.r.l. themselves appeared as a plaintiff is based on the - according to them - possible transferability of the licence agreement as the Thendic Electronic Components GmbH as well as Thendic-France S.ā.r.l. and Genesi S.ā.r.l. have the same main shareholder, Raquel Velasco and Bill Buck.
The court records about this lawsuit have already been made available via the Internet before (as far as they had been publicly available) but to have access there you had to register (for free) at the owner of the site, Rich Woods, and then you received a password. Free accessible had made only chosen documents.

Fortnightly Q&A's with Fleecy Moss - episode 23
The English online magazine AmigaWorld has published episode 23 of the regular questions and answers session with Fleecy Moss, CTO at AMIGA, Inc. (Update 2012-03-15, cg: as the original document is no longer available, the following content was moved into our database):
1) Amighista: Is Python to be included in the upcoming OS4.0 release? If yes, which version? Will it include a GUI binding (like wxPython, PyGTK or Python for QT)? Who's the person in charge for the porting?
Fleecy: Python is being considered as the cross platform scripting language for AmigaOS4. It is still too early to talk about the project as AmigaOS4.0 itself is the priority at the moment but progress is being made in determining how to create a version that will integrate well with and make use of all the new features of AmigaOS4. Important issues to consider include the GUI and how best to implement the concept of the "ARexx port".
2) Step: We are continuously seeing improvements on the OS4 front in shape of screenshots, progress reports, etc. but why dont we see this in regards of the DE/Anywhere?
Fleecy: As we have said on several occasions, the AmigaDE was always a technology set from which we were to develop product lines. The first product line we talked about was Amie, which was to be a Smartphone to Server operating environment. However, after 18 months of experience with Intent, it became apparent that it would not be able to span such a wide vision, being better suited to a content solution. This allowed us to restart AmigaOS development, with the aim of developing it over time into something approaching the original Amie concept, whilst implementing the Amiga Anywhere and AACE product lines from the AmigaDE technology set.
The current focus of AACE is content deployment, which means deploying one or more pieces of content in a closed or open mode onto software hosts - Windows, PocketPC, Smartphone, and then Linux and Symbian. We have been concentrating on card, download and on device deployments in standalone format. There have been no screenshots because all you see is the content itself running. Once we have this completed, we will finish the AACE player with the new interface, but again, this is just a content player. If you are looking for the Amie solution then you will be better off playing close attention to AmigaOS4, particular as the AG2 project starts to see technology becoming part of AmigaOS4 releases.
3) Troels: Have any work started in regard to porting DE to AOS4 and who is (or will be) doing the port?
Fleecy: The long announced plan has always been to have AmigaDE technology running on AmigaOS4.2, the first PPC outing for the AmigaDE. This plan has not changed. As is normal, the Tao-Group will do the host port, since the AmigaDE can only run on hosts provided by the Tao-Group. The CII will be exclusively done by them but they have asked that we help them on the PII.
Work on it will start when AmigaOS4.1 has shipped.
4) drebben: Why will the JIT not be used for OS components and how will the system know what is an OS compnent and what is not?
Fleecy: Accelerating only applications eases the JIT design and integration a lot and gives a much cleaner result since there is a clear separation between legacy applications (and their translated code) and the rest of the system. It also gives us the possibility to add certain kinds of code optimisations and otehr JIT options like translation buffer size s.o. on a per application basis.
Another reason are code segments where response time is more important than execution speed, e.g. interrupts.
Of course one could argue that the speed impact resulting from the remaining 68k library parts could result in a bad trade off against the benefits of a cleaner code base but then one should also remember that there will be virtually no time critical 68k code left in the system and therefore also virtually no loss of speed. If push comes to shove we can add a dedicated JIT translation service that takes care of system code but it simply isn't worth the effort.
Regarding the howto: That's a technical detail I don't want to discuss in the public, what can be said is that we can easily track which loaded code segments belong to which task and the JIT makes use of that functionality.
5) HMK: How old versions of AmigaOS will Amiga Inc. support with Boing Bags, security updates (if such), when OS4 gets released?
Fleecy: We obviously want to encourage the community to move towards AmigaOS4.0 with all of its inherent advantages. We also want to encourage them to move to new hardware but recognise that the investment in classic machines and the PPC accelerators has been considerable, which is why we will support them if we can through AmigaOS4.0 and perhaps further.
As far as AmigaOS3 is concerned we have to look at the business arguments for continuing to support it. We are of course interested in the views of the community in this respect. In short, we will end support for AmigaOS3 but it is a question of when.
6) IonMane: Why would you want to develop on a cross-platform environment (= CPE) to draw people specifically to your own platform? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of having AmigaOS 4 in the first place?
Fleecy: I'm afraid I don't understand this question, or at least have read it to mean at least two contradictory things. Can you send me a clearer version privately (fleecy@amiga.com) and I'll answer you and have Amigaworld update this Q&A.
7) kvinkunx: Did you already enter into talks with the authors of OpenOffice? This freeware office package already runs on several platforms defined as 'main' and would be really handy for Amiga users, an official approach of Amiga Inc. may convince the authors to do an A1 port I think.
Fleecy: I don't want to provide answers relating to specific third party applications or products but rest assured that we are well aware of the essential applications needed by Amiga users if the Amiga platform is to be a compelling choice for digital users and activity is progressing. I would point out as I have done before that it all boils down to size of market and amount of resources, two things we are working hard to improve.
8) Asemoon: AmigaOS4 is the main reason for me to get an AmigaOne. However I would also like to give Linux a try but I do not want to have to deal with bootloader menus all the time I boot the hardware. Wouldn't it be a good idea to create a bootloader for the AmigaOne which automaticly boots AmigaOS4 and only brings up the bootloader menu after pressing a certain key?
Fleecy: Yes it would 8-)
The situation is more complex than that. The booloader is designed to boot OS4 and Linux (or any other OS that is able to live on RDB partitions); however no actual code for Linux is ready. What we are planning as a temporary measure is yet-another-env-variable with an indicator on which kernel to load by default. The whole issue is only valid if you install OS4 and Linux on the same HD. If you install on different HDs, no problem: you set a default boot method and can change it by interrupting the autoboot.
9) TheJackal: Are there plans for the new graphics library (or Vega) to have the ability to use 32bits per channel, (128bits per pixel). This would allow floats to be used instead of u8's (0..255)?
Fleecy: I don't want to say too much about Vega since we are often accused of talking about things rather than doing. We recognise however that most people will judge AmigaOS4 by what they see and if Vega is to be the mechanism by which what they see is created, then it is going to have to have some pretty impressive and far sighted technology within it.
10) Angrybrit: I'd like to ask about the Media player that's gonna be included in AmigaOS4. Is there gonna be an official one or are we gonna have to adopt a third party like Mplayer/VideoLan?
Fleecy: MooVid is planned for AmigaOS4.0.

CD Tools: More than 1000 ViCaDo Downloads since 7th November, 2003
After more than 1000 users downloaded the VideoCD software "ViCaDo" since 7th November 2003 (as amiga-news.de
reported), the developer Christian Effenberger is hoping for a bit more feedback than he has received up until now. Of special interest is ViCaDo's performance on AmigaOS4 and MorphOS 1.4 (both under 68K emulation).
For a general test of whether AV1 programs can run on the platform, try the tool GetImageInfo, in the download area. In the event the program doesn't run on your system, please list your computer specifications and configuration in the Forum.
Requests, observations, and improvement suggestions are gladly accepted by Christian Effenberger, who is happy about any kind of feedback. (nba) (Translation: dm)

Picture Report from this Year's Meeting of the Finnish Amiga User Group
The Finnish Amiga User Group had an annual meeting on 27th September in Riihimäki. Not even counting the officials points of order from the meeting agenda, demonstrations of OS4 beta version as well as Pegasos and MorphOS were shown. It was also possible to take a look at the Swedish Amiga magazine Azine and purchase it right there from the Amiga dealer Gentle Eye Ky.

ZoneXplorer: Version 1.2 Released
The fractal generator ZoneXplorer by Elena Novaretti has reached version 1.2. The main thing is that JPEG support for saving images has been integrated (with the Navigator as well as the Renderer), a functionality advance for which the author extends thanks to Frank Wille, due to his support.
System Requirements:
PowerPC Version:
- MorphOS (Pegasos or PowerUP)
- ClassAct (Aminet) or ReAction (AmigaOS 3.5+)
- Hi-/True-Color-Desktop (8-Bit not supported)
68k Version:
- AmigaOS 3.5+
- Hi-/True-Color-Desktop on P96-/CGX-compatible graphic card (8bit not supported)
- png.datatype
The use of an emulator like Amithlon or UAE on a fast x86 computer is not strictly required for the 68k version, but is strongly recommended.

SN-EuroArchiv Coin Collecting Program Available from Aminet
SN-EuroArchiv V1.0 is now available from Aminet (109 KB).
SN-EuroArchiv is a coin collection management program designed especially for European coins. It manages single coins, coin sets, memorative coins, coin rolls, and starter sets in a simple fashion and allows an overview of one's coin collection through tables and statistics.
For the next few days to two weeks the appearance of the version 1.1 on Aminet is already being announced. Two functions are included, one for the overview of the conditions and strike quality, along with counting of the Euro coins, and one which points out the expenditures involved with your collection in monthly steps, so that you receive an overview of how much you spent each month on Euro coins. Further, there is to then be a possibility to also calculate the expenses of associated materials like coin cases, albums and so on.

Amithlon: the Amithlon Kernel Project
Because the development of the Amiga emulator Amithlon has ceased for a while, it's become considerably more difficult to get Amithlon to cooperate on modern PC hardware. On account of that Gary Colville decided to start the Amithlon
Kernel Project.
In doing this, Gary has taken advantage of a characteristic of the Amithlon product: Amithlon consists of two components - the actual emulator as well as a tailored Linux kernel, on which the emulator runs. While the former has commercial status and thus may not be modified by outsiders, the latter is under an open source license and may therefore may be expanded by a third party. Through this, support for modern chipsets and graphic cards is made possible.
Because new hardware costs money, and Gary can really only focus on the hardware that he personally owns, he is calling (title link) for financial support from interested users.
Which hardware he can purchase, and thereby support in Amithlon, depends on demand on the part of the users. The most needed support at this time seems to be for the "NForce 2" chipset, used in the products "GeForce FX", "VIA KT600" and "GeForce 4MX."

MorphOS: MLdonkey 2.5-4 released
MLdonkey is a multi-platform multi-networks peer-to-peer client. Originally, it was the first open-source client to access the eDonkey network. The protocol was 'reverse-engineered' using an efficient protocol sniffer, Pandora.
Currently, with eDonkey , it supports several large networks, such as Overnet, Bittorrent, Gnutella (Bearshare, Limewire, etc), Gnutella2 (Shareaza), Fasttrack (Kazaa, Imesh, Grobster), Soulseek (beta), Direct-Connect (alpha), and Opennap (alpha).
The MorphOS release does not only come with the mlnet binary which was done by Sigbjørn Skjæret using his Objective-Caml port for MorphOS, it also features some extra stuff like zuul, an open-source PHP interface for MLdonkey, which was adjusted for use with Amiga browsers. (cg) (Translation: cg)

The changes are listed within the Readme.
System requirements:
- CPU: 68020 (68040 for the intro sequence)
- 16 MB FastRAM
- AGA or gfx board
- 68 MB free space at the hd
Direct download: TotalChaosAGA.lha

Update (cg, 12.11.03, 14:18)
Just after release the author has dicovered a bug: during the first launch of the game the still packed sound archive will be extracted. For this process the ixemul.library.is necessary. If this library is not installed the program aborts this routine without any comment. Nevertheless the game is useable but sound is missing then.

OS4: News on the progress by Thomas Frieden
In the forum of amigaworld.net, Thomas Frieden ("EntilZha") delivered insight into the current version of OS4 or on its progress, respectively. At the same time, a newly integrated feature was announced which - if anything proceeds well - would be shown this weekend as a surprise in France.
The main statements at a glance:
Graphics system:
"We're still working on the graphics system. The originally anticipated 2-3 weeks where of course 2-3 weeks of full-time work, but as always, something else comes your way and you have to rest some work and give priority to other..."
Drivers/PPC-Modules:
"Things are slowly falling into place now. A lot of people are currently working on AmigaOne drivers (that's one of the biggest projects, anyway). And of course, everybody is still working on bits & pieces. Browsing through the recent upload notification mails on our beta list, I see some new PPC-native datatypes, several bugfixes to existing components (most of them are PPC now), some new PPC modules (not a lot... did I mention that most of them are PPC now, anyway ? I think I have only 4 68k modules remaining on my work installation, one of them graphics.library)."
Kernel:
"One of the new "kernel" related features is a new ramlib (that's the component that is used to bring libraries into memory from disk): You might know that this is a prime candidate for crashing to do flakey library initialisation code. The new ramlib is now multi-threaded, meaning that the opening of libraries will be done in sub-processes. If one of those crashes, it's just removed by the mother process, improving system stability a lot.
Additionally, the latest exec includes a new memory tracking facility: You can now find out for each memory location if it's been allocated at all, and who allocated it. Very useful if you're debugging a program, or want to throw away all memory allocated by a given task." (snx)

Game: Tamar Needs a New Continent!
It is on us once more. In November 2003 the world of Tamar will contain a new continent. With 280 players the existing parts of Tamar have become full.
Every time this happens Tamar is expanded with further sections. This is an ideal time to jump in the game! Start with 20 to 50 other new testers, and struggle on the same terms in this part of Tamar.
The new territories will next be partitioned off from the other parts of Tamar, allowing the possibility of development independent of the old Lords. Who will be the victor? Who has the best strategy?
We're seeking free testers for Macintosh and PC.
By 15th November, a new version of the PC client that alleviates the slow start time will have appeared. The exact features may be read in the update text.
Tales of Tamar is a PBEM round-based online strategy game (PBEM =
Play By E-Mail) from Eternity, in which you take over the leadership of a people, in a manner similar to the games Kaiser and Civilization, and in which you compete in commerce, diplomacy, and battle to bring your land to riches and glory and honor. (nba) (Translation: dm)

Health: MouseBean Ergonomic Hand Rest
An independent study has shown that three
out of four computer mouse users suffering
from workrelated
upper limb disorders (WRULDs) and painful
hands and wrists, found their symptoms
alleviated after only two weeks of using
the MouseBean Ergonomic Hand Rest. This
is important
news for the increasing number of computer
users suffering from WRULDs and for businesses
losing millions of working days each year
when sufferers have to take time off work
to recover from
these disabling conditions.
The independent study was conducted by John Ridd,
a consultant ergonomist specialising in
workplace design and musculoskeletal disorders. A
mixed group of typical computer mouse users
with self-reported hand, wrist and upper limb
musculoskeletal disorders, tested the MouseBean
Hand Rest in an office environment.
After using the MouseBean Hand Rest for only two
weeks, three out of four users found it effective
at reducing the symptoms of WRULDs. At the end of
the test phase, 85% of subjects said that they
would choose to continue using the MouseBean Hand
Rest if they could. John Ridd concludes:
"The study would suggest that, for many mouse users
suffering with hand or wrist pains,
there is a very real likelihood of reducing those
symptoms within two weeks of using the
MouseBean Hand Rest."
The MouseBean Hand Rest is very different to regular
wrist rests - it uses two soft pads to support
the hand in comfort and the curved base lets you
glide on the mouse mat with a relaxed arm and
shoulder. The pads form a gap under the hand,
helping to reduce pressure in the wrist and
protect
the delicate median nerve from the dangers of
poor posture.
Commenting on the gel-filled wrist rests currently
on the market, John Crocker, managing director
of MouseBean Limited says: "Although they feel soft,
some gel-filled wrist rests may be doing
more harm than good! Research has shown that they
can actually increase pressure in the wrist and
lead to nerve damage! We believe that the MouseBean
Hand Rest is the first device of its kind to
have undergone a comprehensive evaluation and are
naturally delighted with the results of the
independent study. Whilst three out of four mouse
users suffering from WRULDs found their
symptoms alleviated, we have anecdotal evidence to
suggest that the device may be preventing the
onset of some symptoms as we have no reports of
customers developing new hand or wrist
conditions since fitting the device to their mouse.
In addition, the majority find it so comfortable to
use that they don't want to go back to using a mouse
without it."
The independent study shows that the MouseBean Hand
Rest is one of the simplest and most
effective ergonomic aids for mouse users; it converts
a regular mouse into an ergonomic mouse.
Available in a wide variety of attractive colours, the
MouseBean Hand Rest can be attached (with
the simple plug and socket device supplied) to most
regular mice. It can also be customised with a
logo or made to match corporate colours. To order, visit
the website under the title link and click `How to
Buy'. Retail price from Ŗ6.99. (nba)

Articia S: Genesi and Hyperion gave information about the supposed "Bug"
During a discussion at the thread "Pegasos Italia" at ANN Raquel Velasco and Bill Buck by Genesi as well as Ben Hermans by Hyperion gave detailed information about the supposed bug of the Articia S northbridge for the first time.
Genesi published during that discussion protocol with which the problem should be reproduceable:
The following problem is given with the current Articia S versions:
The CPU interface fails to make all needed PCI to Memory transactions transparent to the CPU. This leads to failed (missed) snoop responses from the CPU in case of a modified cache line. The result may be a data corruption. The problem can be verified by creating a huge DMA load to the system.
1) Create a Linux partition with reiserfs using the IDE channel
2) Create a Linux partition with reiserfs using a 1394 (firewire) drive
3) Create any Linux partition (any device possible)
4) Enable DMA for IDE using 'hdparm'
5) Copy some data ~1-2GB using 1) and 2)
6) unmount 1)+2)
7) run the 'reiserfsck' tool using an endless shell script for 1)+2)
8) Start a ftp of a huge file (>memory+swap) using 3) and calculate a checksum for that file using an endless shell script
Be sure that the L2 cache of the CPU is enabled during your tests. Watch the results.
Required Resources
1 - Red Hat Linux Distribution 7.x
2 - IDE Hard Drives
1 - PCI Firewire Card
1 - 1394 Firewire Drive
Notes:
Line 1) - One IDE Drive for the O/S
Line 2) - Needs PCI Firewire Card, 1394 Firewire Card and SW Drivers for same
Line 3) - Configure partition on additional IDE Drive
Requires 2 weeks minimum full time effort (probably 3 weeks) for someone with advanced Linux configuration setup and test expertise.
Hyperions answer to this is:
"This 'so called' problem is the direct result of the Articia S's ability to handle memory access by the CPU and PCI bus.
This behavior reduces latency but is unknown in the Wintel world which is why the Linux drivers don't cater for it.
In the Wintel world either the CPU or the PCI busmaster is allowed to write to memory, not both at the same time.
MAI has been reworking the Linux drivers to cope with this and Hyperion has been aware of this feature for quite some time and has taken it into account when doing DMA capable drivers for the AmigaOne hardware.

Poseidon: Unknown person spreads crack-instructions
As the author of Poseidon, Chris Hodges, informs on his website, someone spread instructions how to crack his USB stack on three mailing-lists yesterday.
According to Chris Hodges, this happened under the fake name "Dan Gaines" and, as a smokescreen, by using a freemailer in London as well as an anonymous proxy located in the UK. But the high amount of grammar mistakes in the posting would make it unlikely that this person was a native speaker. "Dan Gaines" would have been registered only a week ago, by which this seems to be a thoughtfully planned assault.
As the author states, the effects on the development of Poseidon are still to be considered - but the effect on his motivation would have been already devastating.
The further speculation by Chris Hodges regarding the background of this incident can be found on his website in the message from November 3. (snx)

ArakAttack - USB driver for Amithlon & OpenPCI
The ArakAttack demo version is now available. The demo version is time limited and much slower than the full version.
What is ArakAttack?
ArakAttack is an USB driver paket that allows the usage of USB on any AmigaOS
compatible system with PCI slots. ArakAttack isn't an USB stack, it's a driver
paket for Chris Hodges great USB Stack Poseidon.
What are the features of ArakAttack?
- Amithlon optimised version.
- OpenPCI compatible version.
- UHCI controller support. (incl. on board)
- OHCI controller support. (incl. on board)
- Unlimited number of USB controllers supported at the same time.
- Unlimited number of parallel USB transfers garantees maximum performance.
- Only one device with multiple units makes installation very easy.
- Intelligent transfer descriptor caching mechanism.
- Several user options allow an optimisation of resource management to the users requirements.
- Full mem handler support. (Frees resources and caches if the system signals low system memory)
- No HUB depth limits.
- Separate time out handling for each USB request garantees the driver never freezes the USB stack or the system.
- External interrupt fallback for systems with interrupt trouble.
What is also required to use ArakAttack?
The latest version of Chris Hodges' Poseidon USB Stack.
In addition to that other components are required:
Amithlon: powerpci.library - version 2.13 or better.
Amiga PCI / Pegasos: openpci.library - version V1.20 or better.
Which USB Controller is required for ArakAttack?
Most of the current USB controllers are supported. Just take care it's UHCI, OHCI or EHCI compatible. Well, you will have difficulties to find any other within the stores now.
Amithlon user may be happy to hear that on board USB controllers are working, too!
How can I register?
Well, currently the registration makes no sense, because ArakAttack is
quite useless without a registered USB Stack.
If you own a Poseidon key feel free to register. Further information can be
found in the manual.
PLEASE: Don't bother Chris Hodges with questions about registering Poseidon. He
is very busy at the moment, so please keep quiet until the registration site
will be up again.

Back to the Roots: bchunk win32 - Official beta test
This is an official beta version of the Win32-port of binchunker which is also known as
bchunk. bchunk is an Unix-Shell command which allows you to extract ISO-images from
CUE/BIN-images. Besides this it is possible to extract audio tracks to the CD-audio-format
(.crd) or to the WAV-format (.wav).
The file is available under the title link (17kb). An Amiga version is still in work.
Please test this program with e.g. CD32-CDs which also contains audio tracks and test if
the WAV-files are correctly playable.
You can get the source code at inquiry.

Source Code Released of Civilization: Call to Power II
On 28th October 2003 Activision released for free the source code for the strategy game "Civilization: Call to Power II." It may be downloaded from the website of Apolyton . Because the hardware requirements are moderate, PC hardware with a speed of 166 MHz and memory of 64 megs, nothing should stand in the way technically of a port to Amiga OS or MorphOS. The 8 megs of source contain the main parts of the code necessary to do a port. (nba) (Translation: dm)

AWeb: Status report
No, we're not dead. :-) People are busy doing other things and things are awfully quiet. However a few things have happened:
GCC conversion of AWeb APL Lite seems to be progressing, slowly but steadily. It was therefore decided that we still need another SAS/C version before finally moving to GCC as the wait has been too long already.
We are in need of a person who can compile the AWeb 3.4 APL sources in CVS with the patches that have been submitted by various people and help us go towards a 3.5 release. This needs to be done using SAS/C.
As for the new AWeb, progress on KHTML is going too slow, because the developers have too little time to work on it. If you are willing to give a hand in helping a modern HTML-browser onto the AmigaOS, AROS and MorphOS platforms, contact me.
If you are wondering about our plans, the document which describes this is here. Be aware that the document is not entirely complete and is based on discussion on our developer mailing list. (snx)

GamePlan's Second Offering: Joysticks - Game Controllers from 1972 to 2003
After the success of "GamePlan: Consoles and Home Computers" a new book from the publishing house Gameplan is coming this November: "JOYSTICKS, an Illustrated History of the Game Controller." In cooperation with Take 2, Winnie Forster and Stephan Freundorfer wrote a reference book for all gamers: Joysticks shows the best and coolest, the humblest and the most daring controllers from 30 years of computer and videogame history. From the classic Atari stick to the handy pads of Sega, Sony and Nintendo all the way to the optical precision equipment of the ego shooter and onwards, Joysticks awes, stuns, and amuses gamers of every generation. Zeit.de: Programmers from all Lands Unite!
"Programmers from all Lands..." is an overview of the mobilization of the open source movement, a comparison of different ideological perspectives of software development and a short exploration of the problems of software patents. An excerpt follows (with the friendly approval of Zeit.de) and the complete article is reachable under the title link:
For years only geeks got excited about it. They sat, strewn around the globe, at their computers and programmed, criticized, and discussed via the Internet. The rest of the world had no idea what was there in the 'Net: at first glance just some software. Actually the free thinking online community had created an antithesis to Microsoft, the most powerful and largest software house in the world. [...]
