Browser: Status update for Paihia development
Under the title link, a status update for the development status of Paihia was published, a browser planned for all Amiga systems.

Reportedly, the CSS engine is currently as good as done and is checked using the W3C test suite. The language parts of EcmaScript are also complete, whereas the object library is not, yet. The Document Object Model in Version Level 3, on the other hand, is implemented only to 20%.

Reportedly, all this and the source code of the Paihia Web-Engine requires less than 700 KB uncompressed, and is compiled by Visual Studio to a binary file that is only around 300 KB in size.

Grande Paihia should become a modern, small, fast and portable web browser, which fully supports XML, HTML 4, CSS 2.1, DOM Level 3 and EcmaScript 3. The browser, according to the author, is written from scratch and is based on no existing web software. (snx) (Translation: cad)

MorphOS: Descent:Freespace 2 ported (SDL version)
Michal 'kiero' Wozniak has adapted Descent:Freespace 2 to MorphOS. The port is based on the SDL version by Taylor Richards.

System requirements:
  • MorphOS 1.4.x
  • 3D drivers
  • powersdl.library
  • 256 MB RAM
  • Radeon graphics card (recommended)
  • Original version of Descent:Freespace 2 (3 CD's)
Limitations:
  • Small graphical errors can appear (especially in fog)
  • No network support
  • Mods were not tested
  • Some keyboard commands possibly do not work correctly; should you come across such keys or key combinations, you can allocate the affected commands to other inputs via the settings (F2)
Installation:

For installation with the accompanying script, you need the original version of the game with 3 CD's. For this, copy the files from the MorphOS archive into the directory in which the game should be installed. Afterwards, start the installation script.

AmigaOS 4: RockBEAT 1.2.1
RockBEAT is a simple software drum machine for AmigaOS 4 by James Carroll. It is a tool for musicians that allows you to create drumming tracks.

It can create multiple tracks, each one being 4x 4/4 measures with 16th notes. You can save individual tracks as WAV files, or the whole thing as one big song. You can drop in your own 16 Bit 44100 Hz PCM WAV samples in the drumsamples folder if you like.

Version 1.2.1 fixes an important bug. The WAV files that were generated by RockBEAT had an incorrect header value.

The demo is restricted to 10 minutes. If you like it, you can purchase a keyfile from the author for 15 US-Dollar. (snx)

MorphOS: DigiFilter 1.0
Grzegorz 'Krashan' Kraszewski has released DigiFilter 1.0 today - a tool for designing digital FIR filters ("finite impulse response").

Unlike other applications limited to typical lowpass, highpass, bandpass and bandstop frequency responses, or limited set of frequency points, DigiFilter features graphical frequency response editor.

The program uses windowing design technique with rectangle, triangle, Blackman and Kaiser windows up to 2048 taps.

Designed responses may be stored to file and loaded later. Set of tap multipliers for a designed filter may be saved to a text file as a set of floating point numbers.

MorphOS: Virtual Grand Prix 2 (Update)
Paolo 'the Alien' Cattani and Alassoft ported Virtual Grand Prix 2 to MorphOS. The full MorphOS version is now available for download free of charge for personal use, as a thank you to the whole MorphOS community.

The MorphOS version has been made possible thanks to a free ODW development system from Genesi/Freescale. It requires MorphOS 1.4.5, the 3D Update and a supported gfx board.

Virtual Grand Prix 2 is a modern open-wheeled racecar simulator by Paolo Cattani and his staff at Alas Soft. It is the sequel of the original Virtual Grand Prix developed for the Amiga range of computers.

VGP2 uses industrial standards for the simulation of the mechanical components of the car, thus achieving a very high degree of realism in the handling of the virtual one-seater.

The MorphOS version of Virtual Grand Prix 2 is free for personal use and can be downloaded from the title link. However, if you think that the software deserves it, you can make a small donation for it. According to the authors, you can consider it as a kind of "sequel-ware" - i.e. if they collect some money, they might port any further development of the game or sequels to MorphOS as well.

Update: (19:00, 01.11.05, snx)
Andrea Maniero points out that the MorphOS version is compatible with additional tracks that have been created for the Mac and Win versions (you just need to edit the VGP2/config/circuiti.config file accordingly), and with the update pack that gives names, models and textures from the real 2004 F1 championship.

The additional packs can be found at the official VGP2 website. For further information, you can also check the old threads in the RaceSimCentral VGP2 forum. (snx)

3D Demo Object for Blender: Gingerbread man with bones (update)
Carsten Siegner has created a demo object for the 3D renderer Blender, which illustrates how bones (so-called fittings) are built into the gingerbread man from the Blender tutorial.

In addition to other diverse platforms, Blender is also available as a port for MorphOS.

Using the bones, you can animate the gingerbread man arbitrarily freely. In the existing demo object, only bones for arms and legs are available, however more - for the movement of the head, for instance - can be added.

The object does not possess textures yet, since it should primarily illustrate the integration of the bones.

Book: "Version Control with Subversion - For Subversion 1.1"
Version control systems like CVS and Subversion are used in software development in particular. They support multiple developers working on a project at the same time, and every state of a project, that was previously saved, can be restored at any time, for example, when a new idea has turned out to be the wrong way, and then you would rather pick up from where you were a week ago.

In his journal entry, Sven Drieling describes his first experiences with Subversion, states possible applications for a version control system, and gives an account of his impressions from the online book Version Control with Subversion -For Subversion 1.1.

Subversion exists for the Amiga and for MorphOS, too. (cg) (Translation: cad)

AmigaOS 4: Warp3D picture viewer WarpView
The picture viewer WarpView uses Warp3D (and with it, the 3D hardware of your computer) for displaying pictures. The advantage lies in very fast and high-quality scalings (screenshot) that are thus possible, however, the program requires more Video-RAM than conventional picture viewers. Datatypes are used for loading the pictures. Voodoo graphics cards are not supported yet. (cg) (Translation: cad)

Development environment: Cubic IDE available (formerly known as GoldED Studio)
As announced was GoldED Studio with the new version renamed to Cubic IDE (Integrated Development Environment). Officially supports the development enviroment by Dietmar Eilert AmigaOS 3.x and MorphOS 1.4.x.

Below's an translation of the official German press release about Cubic IDE:

ABOUT CUBIC IDE

The main part of Cubic IDE is the editor GoldED 8. Next to this the package contains several free C/C++ compilers like GCC, the HTML environment Webworld, a LISP interpreter, the spell checking software Joyce, Roget's Thesaurus, authors modes for Rexx macros and installations and further parts. Cubic IDE supports developers from the writing of the source codes and the documentation (AmigaGuide and AutoDoc modes) to the creation of installations with the installation wizard that is part of the package. Cubic IDE integrates seamless into SAS/C, vbcc, GCC and the StormC3 development environment:
  • Debuggersupport for users of StormC3: breakpoints are shown next to the text
  • a configurable reference system for autoDocs, includes, source codes and other material helps you to find information in a quick way
  • the QuickInfo function shows always information for the word under the cursor (e.g. prototypes of the OS functions)
  • the QuickFunc navigation shows all functions, structures etc. that are definde in the source code
  • inbuilt grep support allows you to search for (and replace) patterns in a list of files

CUBIC IDE REPLACES GOLDED STUDIO AIX

The software's name until now was GoldED Studio AIX and the internal name was GoldED 7 (upgrades for GoldED AIX users are available on the Cubic IDE website, log in). The new name was chosen to better reflect the content. The first new version number is 1.0, a compromise between an editor on the level of 8.0 and an IDE on the level of 0.4 :) And here's the new logo.

AmigaOS 4: Shared compiling via several computers
Steven Solie has ported the distcc-packet (client & server) in version 2.18.3-1 as well as the parallel working possibilities of GNU make in version 3.81b3-1 for AmigaOS 4.

Thus owners of several computers which work with AmigaOS 4 and which have the OS4-SDK installed can share the compiling processes on these ones.

Because of still missing functions of the operating system as well as clib2-ts limitations this ports still are beta versions. A completely working version can be not expected until there will be updates for AmigaOS 4 and clib2.

Website: Commodore Amiga Information Source closes
Patrick Klöter writes:

"Dear Amiga Friends,

In the last weeks and months, I have been getting around to updating my Amiga web page less and less. Therefore, I have the following announcement to make: The articles from Commodore Amiga Information Source will migrate to the Amiga Future web page in the following weeks. Whether into the article database or somewhere else, remains to be seen. Andreas and I will try to haul as many articles as possible from my website.

In return, my page will go offline soon. The guestbook, my forum and the ML will also be affected by this. Therefore, I am already referring to the forum of AMIGA Future or the forum of Amiga-News.

This move does not come easy to me, but I am pleased that the content is preserved through Amiga Future.

On this path, I'd like to thank all Commodore and Amiga friends, who have visited this website regularly and provided me with praise and criticism in the 4 1/2 years.

Sincerely yours,
Patric Klöter" (cg) (Translation: cad)

ValiantVision: Support for the TV card chipset saa713x
Guido Mersman has been working on "ValiantVision," the successor to AmithlonTV, the TV card driver software, for some time. As he discloses in his developer journal, a driver for the Philips saa713x chipset has reached beta status in the meantime.

This very widespread chipset offers better picture quality than the bt8x8, supported by AmithlonTV/ValiantVision until now, and supports two picture channels. Thus, it will be possible to display a freely scalable (preview) picture, while in the background, the picture is displayed in full size through the second channel. (cg) (Translation: cad)
