AmigaOS 4 for PowerUp: Press releases by Hyperion and ACube
As announced at the AmiWest 2007 event, the AmigaOS 4 version for PowerUp-Amigas will be released November 30 (amiga-news.de reported). Meanwhile, both Hyperion Entertainment VOF and ACube Systems Srl. have published official press-releases on their respective website.
AmigaOS 4.0 for Classic Amiga to be released November 30th
Antwerp, Belgium - 23 October, 2007 As announced this weekend in Sacramento, CA during the Amiwest banquet, Amiga OS 4.0 for classic Amiga’s equipped with PowerPC accelerator cards, will start shipping on 30 November 2007.
The version of Amiga OS 4.0 shipping for classic Amiga’s is functionally identical to the version already available for AmigaOne hardware and can co-exist with existing Amiga OS 3.x installations in a dual-boot configuration.
The cardboard packaging will contain a CD, a DD boot-floppy to allow installation without a pre-installed Amiga OS and a printed “Quick Start” manual.
Production and world-wide distribution of Amiga OS 4.0 Classic will be handled by our strategic partners Acube Systems s.r.l.
Due to the wide variety of (often no longer produced) third-party hardware available for the Amiga 1200, Amiga 3000(T) and Amiga 4000 (T), prospective customers are strongly advised to verify whether their hardware is supported by Amiga OS 4.0 Classic before placing their order. A list of supported and unsupported hardware will be going online soon on Acube Systems' website. Depending on overall market-demand for the Amiga OS 4.0 Classic version, additional hardware may be supported in the future.
AmigaOS 4.0 Classic will require at least 64 MB of memory (more is recommended) and at least 200 MB of free hard disk space, as well as a supported PowerPC accelerator (CyberstormPPC or BlizzardPPC).
Hyperion Entertainment once again wishes to thank its loyal customers for their business and support.

AmiWest 2007: AmigaOS 4 for PowerUp on November 30
In the course of AmiWest in Sacramento, which takes place this weekend, Steven Solie has announced, at the request of AmigaOS 4 developer Hans-Jörg Frieden, that starting from November 30, AmigaOS 4 will be availabe for Amiga computers with PowerUp accelerator cards.
The Amiga models 1200, 3000, 4000 and 4000T are supported, provided that they are equipped with a BlizzardPPC or CyberStormPPC card.
An existing AmigaOS installation is not required, merely a hard disk as well as a floppy disk and a CD drive. When booting from the enclosed floppy disk, the CD-ROM driver will be loaded. Should a system already be installed, the installation can be started directly from the CD as well.
Upon an inquiry on supported expansions, Hans-Jörg 'Rogue' Frieden points out that there will be a hardware compatibility list with all relevant information.
But at the moment, there is a Highway driver for USB, and if he remembers correctly, FastATA and IDEFix as well as similar hardware are supported as well. However, the installation process currently requires that you have
connected either an IDE or a SCSI CD drive to the CyberStormPPC. The SCSI controller of the BlizzardPPC, on the other hand, is not currently supported, so only the IDE port of the Amiga 1200.
Support for other hardware could possibly be added within the scope of an update. With regard to PCI, all Prometheus-esque PCI solutions as well as the Mediator 1200 and 4000 expansions are supported, no "DMA tricks" though. (snx) (Translation: cad)

The source code of the main programme will be withheld for a while, because a final decision regarding that has not been done yet. Speicher-Allokator: TLSFMem O(1)
TLSFMem is an implementation of a very new memory allocation system called
TLSF (two level segregated fit). TLSF was described in a paper by the three
italian researchers M. Masmano, I. Ripoll, A. Crespo.
Originally designed for Realtime Operating Systems, all allocation and free
operations run with constant time complexity (O(1)). This is a major
improvement over the original AmigaOS memory system, which gets slower
while memory gets fragmented (O(m) where m is the number of fragments).
Moreover, the old AmigaOS allocator uses a first fit strategy, which causes
the memory to fragment pretty quickly. TLSF is an exact fit allocator for
memory blocks smaller than 512 bytes and a good fit allocator for all other
sizes: It will always find a free block which is always smaller than 103%
of the requested block. (cg) (Translation: aj)

Preview: Super Pumpkin Bros (AGA)
"Super Pumpkin Bros" is a classic platformer for the Amiga 1200 (Screenshots: 1, 2). The graphics for the whole game are already complete, currently, the program code is being worked on.
The first demo version, which is now available, should convey an impression of the game principle, and give users the possibility to discover errors and inform the author. The finished game should be distributed as public domain. (cg) (Translation: cad)

Amiga Future needs Help
Press release: We need help for the print edition of the Amiga Future. We are looking especially for an editor for apps and games on the classic Amiga. If you are familiar with these topics and your native language is German or English then please contact us via email. Furthermore we are looking for translators for the English print edition. In this case the native language has to be English.
But for our homepage we are looking for support aswell. We need someone to help us regularly or only once with the download database.
It is about testing all downloads on the homepage, writing short descriptions, making screenshots and getting more data.
Our link database needs help aswell. There more links to be added and already existing ones have to be checked if they are valid. For the article section we are looking for someone who wants to do some interviews.
The same holds true for workshops. It doesn't matter whether for the page or the magazine. We need good workshops. Do you know an application very well? Then please write us an email.
At this point we want to remind all people ordering single issues and users with expired subscriptions to order the next issue as soon as possible or to extend the subscription. This way we can calculate the print run much better. The Amiga Future is a non profit project for us. We cannot take the financial risk and print more copies than preorders.
Issue 67 has been completely sold out. We have still some copies of issue 68. In our onlineshop there are only a few copies of The Global Amiga Experience CD left.

Web Browser: IBrowse status update
Oliver "Futaura" Roberts of Ibrowse team gives a short overview of the current status of the web browser in a thread on amigaworld.net:
Reportedly, IBrowse is not currently purchasable, but several distributors have already shown interest. As soon as Stefan Burström, the holder of rights, has a little more time on his hands, he will attend to this problem.
After the quite stressful release of IBrowse 2.4, the team initially treated itself to a short time-out, but since that time, the next version is being worked on again. David Burström has already invested much work in an OS4 port - which requires considerably more effort than one would assume at the first moment, because of the SAS/C dependency of the sources and the partial use of 68K assembler - Roberts himself is working on the completion of this version now.
A CSS parser already exists, too, but the parser is the smaller problem - the still missing adaptation of the layout engine is associated with considerably more work.
IBrowse 3.0 should be released as soon as possible and primarily establish a stable, expandable basis for further updates. Though this means that CSS will not be completely supported yet in this first version - it allows the team to pass on further improvements to the user faster in the form of more regular updates. AROS64: Status update
In his blog, Michal Schulz delivers insight into the current development status of his AROS adaptation to the x86-64 architecture (Bounty 21). So reportedly, the operating system is already bootable from CD and offers partial MMU support. The kernel is partly protected.
Now it is necessary to eliminate all the errors which first become evident on a 64 bit system: first in Zune and Wanderer, afterwards in the remaining standard components of AROS. Furthermore, as many architecture dependencies as possible should be relocated to kernel.resource. (snx) (Translation: cad)

The issue 68 has been released recently and is available in our online shop. Right now we work hard on issue 69. No. 68 is the second Amiga Future issue being published in both German and English. You can order the second English Issue of Amiga Future from our online shop. (snx)

Back to the Roots: Status Information
Press release During the last week the Back to the Roots main archive was completely enabled again, All files are online again. Nearly all funtions are active again.
The archive is still located on our completely filled up
160GB server, but we opened it for your convenience while
we duplicate it to our new terabyte server during the next
weeks. After this we will have space again to continue
with site updates, which we expect around the end of the
year.
Once the new server is installed we will exchange both
machines, which might yield in some temporary inconveniences
for you, surely no big issue after the long wait...
After this, we will rework our current machine as a backup
mirror and team project server, where independent, topic
related non profit projects could find an advertising free
home, preferable people who want to help us to extend the
main archive with legal content.
Until we finished reworking all, our mail server will be
offline, due to the lack of disk space. Mails sent to
@back2roots.org addresses will be forwarded to NIL:, so
don\'t be upset if you contacted us and got no reply.
All mails ever sent from our online email form is not
lost, and will be responded with time.
Our FTP-Server will be updated once it\'s on the new machine.
Dozends of CDs are waiting to be placed online.
Today I (Ralf) found out that Fred Fish died in April (didn\'t
know that yet). What a shame, he\'s the pioneer of PD and open
source for me. May he rest in peace!
Before his death, Fred gave us the license to put all his
productions online at our site, as long as we request third
party rights separately. This makes it possible (and is a
historical duty too) to preserve Fred\'s complete binary
life work legally for everybody.
That\'s why we are searching for everything which carries
his name. Please have a look at your collections (originals)
and send us lists together with the respective copyright notes
(in case of third party involved) to me, if you want to help.
If you are one of these 3rd party copyright holders, please
consider helping us with a license for your part.
We also search original disk images (ADF, DMS, etc, not lha)
of his FF/AmigaLib series for preservating them in their
original form.
Thanks, Fred. We will never forget you! (snx)
