Project Moana: Statement of the developer
In December a CD image was available which was supposed to make it possible using AmigaOS 4 on certain PowerPC models of the Mac mini supplied by Apple. At amigaworld.net the author of this CD, the AmigaOS 4 developer Andrea Vallinotto has warned to use or copy this CD which is based on Moana .
"Regarding the thread about the project Moana files, I'd like to point out some facts that I would like to acknowledge as an AW.net moderator.
First of all, I'm the author of said port, done over an year ago on behalf of ACube, you can contact me directly at email removed .
In the thread I'm referring to, you (and others) are discussing the content of the CD, some even had it running on MacMinis. Such ISO image not only contains parts of OS4 (a commercial product) but also contain modules that are NOT part of either OS4 for A1 nor Classic, and are fully copyrighted by me. I never gave permission to anyone, least this AmigaMac guy, to distribute these files. So owning and using those modules is breaching my intellectual property (IP) and is a clear act of piracy.
So unless Aw.net is a forum which allows and is favorable to piracy, I suggest you post a notice on said thread and stop discussing about it. You can quote this message if you want.
As you probably have seen by the european lawsuit, between me, the two Friedens and against Hyperion and AInc, I'm more than willing to protect my IP from piracy or any other form of unauthorized use.
For the record, that ISO image was obtained from a stolen laptop and there is a police report about that (in the USA). That AmigaMac guy is not some benefactor, he's a criminal.
So far I hadn't written or posted anything because I didn't want to stir up more mess that it was already, and because the (micro) kernel on that ISO image will crash after few minutes of intensive use.
But seeing one of the moderators of Aw.net happily displaying a list of stolen files seems an endorsement of piracy from AW.net. I can't let it pass."

AROS: Review of this year's progress
Paolo Besser compiled some examples of this year's progress in the development of the AROS Research Operating System.
- January: After years of struggling with shell commands and DOpus actions, copying files became easy with Wanderer drag'n'drop
- February: A tap interface has been added to AROS hosted, completing network support
- March: AROS got packet file-systems support, increasing compatibility and coherency with original AmigaOS, and allowing AROS to manage FAT partitions. AROS got also an improved TCP/IP stack, with a new version of AROSTCP, and USB support
- April: Wanderer got a new decoration system, allowing windows to be customized with themes. Support for LUA and ARexx scripts has been improved too
- May: AROS changed its name in 'AROS Research Operating System' and aros.org got an heavy face-lift. Wanderer started showing only icons or all files, and a new community-driven site has born, ArosWorld.org
- June: AROS users decided the official windows and desktop wallpapers in an amusing competition
- September: AROS has been presented to the Amiga community in a conference at Pianeta Amiga. MUIbase and HivelyTracker have been ported too
- October: AROS got a new installer that made installation on hard disk easier. Now AROS can safely live on a disk together with Microsoft Windows
- November: AROS made a huge step ahead with its new 64-bit flavour
- December: Two new AROS distributions have been announced, Velocity and VmwAROS

The amiga demoscene group moodsplateau released a musicdisk called "Fusion" which is dedicated to the Amiga scene as a christmas present.
Musicdisk: "Fusion"
Coding: doc.K.
Music: Climber, Psycreator and d!RT!E
Panel-Gfx: d!RT!E
Gallery-Gfx: baerb/Kakiarts, dael, dafreak
Release date: 25.12.2007

Details: "A musicdisk and a slideshow in one piece. Merged together, we call it 'Fusion'. Our X-MAS present for the AMiGA-Scene supports gfx-cards, sound-cards and it runs nice on hires-interlaced screen-resolution with sound output via paula. Six multichannel tracks in slow funky tech, 2step and chillout style. Some nice photos and gfx were displayed while playing. Season's greetings from individual Computers
Press release: 24.12.2007: Season's greetings from individual Computers
Team individual Computers is sending "merry Christmas" to all our customers and business partners! In the past year, we have been working hard on the giant project "Clone-A", we finished the hardwaredesign of the Viprinet multichannel VPN router and we continued the development of drivers for existing products. For 2008, there will be a number of improvements.
First of all, we're happy to announce that Helmut Schöttner will join our team in 2008. He will be in charge of Amiga driver maintenance and software programming of new microcontroller-based products. Welcome to our team!
We are already working on bringing sold-out products back into the shops: Catweasel MK4, Indivision and Kickflash OS4 will experience small changes for the next production runs.
A few months ago, we have bought the "Micromys" design from Marko Herold. We have continued development of the C64 mouse adapter, and we'll release it under the name "Micromys V3" during the first quarter of 2008. High compatibility with PS2 mice will remain, and USB-mice that support PS2 protocol are automatically switched to that mode. The new adapter can be configured for different target systems by DIP switches:
- C64: 1351 proportional mouse emulation with wheel-extension
- C64: Joystick emulation
- Amiga: 3-button mouse without drivers
- Amiga: 3-button wheelmouse with Freewheel-driver
- Atari ST: 2-button mouse
Micromys V3 can of course be used on other retro-systems that use a 9-pin Sub-D connector for game controllers, such as Atari 8-bit machines, Schneider, Amstrad and MSX.
Competition PRO Retro still available
Although the USB-version of this successful joystick is sold out at the moment, the retro-version that we produced together with Speedlink is still in stock. Starting january 1st, 2008, the price will be raised to 14,99 EUR. If you want to secure the old price for your order, please place your order before the end of the year!
New product: MMC Replay
The demand for MMC64 continues to be strong. With the Commodore Scene Award that we got for the Retro Replay, the demand for this product was also boosted. We have to say thank you for the trust in these products, which are completely sold out now. We took the chance to merge the two products into one new, powerful cartridge, the MMC Replay. Many requests for changes and improvements have been collected over the past six years, which have all been implemented in MMC Replay. A complete description of the features would go beyond the scope of this news item, so we're only listing the most important data here:
- 512KB Ram
- 512KB Flash Rom
- clockport for RR-Net
- SD/MMC card Interface (MMC64 compatible)
- Freezer (Retro Replay compatible)
- extended freezer-mode
- support for native C128 cartridge software
- freeze/activity LEDs
Existing software that was written for MMC64, Retro Replay or the combination of the two can be used without changes. The new hardware features are activated by the completely re-written file browser of MMC Replay. You can now create and mount *.d64 archives. Flashing of cartridge software (for example Action Replay, Retro Replay, Nordic Power or Final Replay) is made a lot easier with the built-in flash utility. The extended freezer mode allows memory configurations that make development of new software a lot easier, but also eases adapting existing software (for example FC3) to this hardware.
Many customers reported difficulties with special models of the C64 or the C128. Up to this point, proper function on these special machines was either only possible after a long warmup-time, or it was not possible at all because the C128 is not 100% compatible to the C64. We have made the necessary changes and completed extensive tests with more than 40 variants of the C64 and C128 - even native C128 cartridge software is supported by MMC Replay!
We have already changed the design of RR-Net a few months ago. The new shape might have looked strange to some customers, but with the release of MMC Replay, our plan should become obvious now: You can now fit MMC64, Retro Replay and RR-Net into one standard cartridge case. Cartridge cases are available separately. Holes for buttons, LEDs, SD card and a networking cable must be made by the user.
MMC Replay will be available from our trade partners shortly.
A picture of the MMC Replay can be found here (similar picture; picture shows extra feature "RR-Net" available at additional charge), screenshots of the MMC Replay GUI: startup screen, MMC Replay flash utility, MMC Replay C64 file browser, MMC Replay C128 startup screen.

Commodore emulator VICEplus for AROS64
Past Tuesday, Marco van den Heuvel has also made available a VICEplus version for the 64 bit version of the open-source operating system AROS.
VICEplus is a derivative of the well-known Commodore emulator VICE. In contrast to the original project, VICEplus not only emulates all 8 bit computers released by Commodore, but also the C64 clone C64DTV, released a few years ago, which brings along some improvements compared to its role model, like 256 colors and a blitter, for instance. Video: Atari ST versus Commodore Amiga in pictures
Under the title link, a video was made available by the YouTube user 'Ahle2', which contrasts pictures of the same games in the Atari ST and the Amiga versions, respectively.
Despite the restrictions due to the low quality of YouTube videos, on the one hand, the graphical superiority of the Amiga back then becomes obvious, but also, on the other hand, how much the Atari graphic artists were able to squeeze out of their computer, despite the limitation to 16 colors.
Titles of the compared games:
1. Rainbow Island
2. SWIV
3. Defender of the Crown
4. Speedball 2
5. Batman
6. Shadow of the beast (Psygnosis opening credits)
7. Shadow of the beast
8. R-Type II
9. Mega lo Mania
10. Dogs of War
11. Turrican

E-Mail Client: YAM 2.5
Press release: The YAM (Yet Another Mailer) open source development team is pleased to announce the immediate release of its stable 2.5 version. After nearly 5 years of constant, restless development, the 2.5 version is the currently most stable and most advanced version of the famous Amiga e-mail suite.
The 2.5 version, apart from very important bug fixes, comes with a largely enhanced user interface with new capabilities like, e.g. an embedded read pane functionality to directly read e-mails without having to open separate read windows. Or even a new search bar allows to quickly search for e-mails or sort them according to predefined categories. Furthermore, YAM was largely reworked internally to perform not only more securely and less cumbersomely. It also comes with important technical enhancements like non-blocking I/O based socket connections allowing the GUI to become more responsive or improved compatibility to common internet standards (RFC). In addition, large internal reworks were performed to be able to implement features like IMAP support or native HTML mail display in one of the next versions.
Therefore, we are indeed very happy to supply you this stable 2.5 release not only right before Christmas, but also right before we are going to start on working on some more interesting things in the upcoming year.
Enjoy the 2.5 version and happy yamming...
With immediate effect, YAM 2.5 is available for download in Aminet and at
sourceforge.net.

Cloanto: Cataloging Effort Reaches 10K Milestone
Press release Udine, Italy - December 14, 2007 - Cloanto Italia srl, Amiga software developers since 1986, announced today that their Amiga cataloging effort reached the milestone of ten thousand disk-based applications.
So far, Cloanto's effort focused on the cataloging of Amiga games and game-like educational titles. Reaching ten thousand titles (counting different major versions, but excluding minor variations) meant, among other things, processing several tens of thousands of floppy disk images, including format variations and non-exact duplicates, which have now been "handprinted". In practice, this data can be used to allow Amiga Forever users to search for games by title or keywords, to access multiple independent partner web sites with additional information and downloads, and to more easily play games without complex configuration work.
Many Amiga enthusiasts already have a multitude of game floppy disk images on their PCs. Having access to this cataloging data, a future version of Amiga Forever will be able to recognize a disk selected by the user, automatically finding the required companion disks and starting the game with the correct (emulated) hardware configuration. All of this, with a simple click on a downloaded disk image (e.g. an ADF file).
The handprinting technology used by Cloanto goes beyond traditional CRC32 file-level checksums which have commonly been used in the emulation community. Rather, Cloanto's software can analyze the images at the Amiga disk block and file system level, extracting precious information, ignoring simple modifications such as a saved game state or high score data, and applying other smart identification algorithms. In this way, more duplicates and disks that would otherwise go unrecognized are identified.
Cloanto's cataloging project began in 2004. In 2005, a number of specification drafts (e.g. XADML, an XML-based application and configuration description format) were announced and published on the Amiga Forever site. At the same time, also with the help of numerous contributors, a database of applications was slowly being built, one title at a time. At Pianeta Amiga 2007, Cloanto announced that the "10K" milestone was near. The effort is now being expanded to content available in formats other than disk images, and to applications other than Amiga games and educational titles. First implementations embodying this new technology and data are planned for 2008. (snx)
