Historical: The "rest" on a Kickstart 1.0-disk
For a longer time it is known that the Kickstart 1.0-disks, which were delivered with the Amiga 1000, contained data which had nothing to do with the Amiga: Probably the developers took an used disk for the master disk which was not completely deleted before.

A hacker now has tried to recover these data. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Individual Computers: Hardware and software upgrade for the C-One
Press release The C-One is unique with its architecture until today: The central components can re-configure each other while the machine is running. If you wanted to do this with a traditional computer, you would have to exchange PCI cards or even the processor while it is turned on. The process took a few seconds, reminding the user of the speed of computers of the 80's. Although the C-One always aimed at resembling computers of that decade, that kind of speed is not acceptable for a current machine. FPGA developer Tobias Gubener has re-written the startup-procedure of the C-One (comparable to the BIOS of a normal PC) from scratch to overcome this.

The new software is called "Newboot" and it is free to every C-One owner. It is not necessary to work on the C-One's hardware, as it is just a flash upgrade. Still, the performance of the new startup is stunning. Instead of the elderly 80's design, the C-One now welcomes you with a graphical menu and almost triple speed. While browsing through the menus, the FPGAs on the board are re-configured a number of times without the user even noticing. With Newboot, the C-One has made the final step to everyday-usability after a development time of five years.

With the FPGA Extender card that is available since yesterday, the C-One even overcomes the limitation of emulating only 8-bit systems. Tobias Gubener has ported Dennis van Weeren's Minimig as a first demonstration of the new capabilities: In addition to VIC-20, C64 and Amstrad CPC, the C-One can now run 32-bit systems like the Amiga. The FPGA capacity of the C-One is increased almost by a factor of five with the extender board! The technical data in short:
  • Cyclone 3 FPGA in 65 nanometer technology
  • 16 MByte RAM with up to 333 MByte per second data rate
  • Stereo delta-sigma audio converter
  • Two crystals for exact PAL and NTSC clocks
  • High-bandwidth interface to the C-One
  • Simple installation without soldering
  • Price: 99 EUR (*)
New C-One boards are sold with the extender-card pre-installed for 333 EUR (*). You can find more pictures and information on the website of the C-One.

(*) Recommended retail price including German sales tax of 19%. Prices at our retail partners may vary. For mail ordering, shipping may be added. (snx)

    • Record option to dump a netstream (only works for cached streams for now).
    • Directories can now be dropped to main window/playlists, or opened from menu.
    • Shuffle option in playlist.
    • Metadata title field is displayed in status string, if available
    • ICY information (shoutcast) displayed in status string, if available.
    • Some files would sometimes be skipped in playlist. Fixed.
    • Reworked a bit GUI show/hide behaviour.
    • GUI can now be started in fullscreen (-fs/fs=1)
    • Status string was refreshed more than necessary.
  • General fixes:
    • Increased a bit audio buffer length with ao_ahi driver.
    • There could be some "hickup at start" effect when playing a new file in playlist. Fixed.
    • Snapshot filenames are truncated (if necessary) to preserve indexes.

AmigaOS 4: Web-Browser OWB 2.15
Jörg Strohmayer has published a new version of his port of the Origyn Web Browser (screenshot). The Cairo-library has been linked with the program. That means OWB 2.15 can be also used under AmigaOS 4.0 again. The changes in detail:
  • The CONFIRMQUIT tooltype was only checked for the quit menu but not for the close menu when the last window is closed, fixed (bugs.os4depot.net issue #44)
  • Using version 2.7.1 of libxml2 instead of 2.7.2 again, should fix some crashes
  • Built the current versions of libcairo and libpixman-1 as static link libraries, with the static libraries OWB works on AmigaOS 4.0 again.
  • OWB 2.15 is linked with static libraries. Might fix the startup crashes I never get on my systems, but could cause even more crashes since most of the static versions of the libraries I have are older than the shared versions and very likely have more bugs.

AmigaOS 4: Web-Browser OWB 2.14 / OWB Address Book 2.2
Jörg Strohmayer has published a new version of his port of the Origyn Web Browser. Please note that Cairo is required which currently is only available for AmigaOS 4.1.

The address book was also updated and is no longer part of the browser archive.

Changes in OWB 2.14:
  • Removed the AddressBook from the OWB archive, it's available on os4depot.net now (network/browser/owbaddressbook.lha)
  • Updated to SVN revision 641
  • Added support for openamiga.org extended default mouse pointers http://openamiga.org/?function=viewproject&projectid=35 (bugs.os4depot.net issue #40) and moved the included pointers to Resources/Storage, except for contextMenuCursor which is missing in the openamiga.org project. If you want to use the included pointers instead of the openamiga.org ones, or own pointers, you have to put them into the Resources directory
  • Fixed a bug in the AutoInstall script
  • Built current versions of libxml2 and libxslt
  • If the CONFIRMQUIT tooltype is enabled it displays a requester when using the quit menu as well now (bugs.os4depot.net issue #44)
  • Added GETURL ARexx command
  • If there is a 2nd %s in the BOOKMARKCOMMAND it's replaced by the pubscreen name of the screen on which the OWB window is now

AmigaOS 4: PFTP 0.4
Pete's FTP (screenshot) written by Peter Gordon has been published in version 0.4. The changes in detail:
  • When you couldn't connect to a server, PFTP would hang. Fixed.
  • Icon is now a proper Amiga icon. Didn't realise it was png because i have the png iconmodule installed and i just copied over the file i got from Mason and forgot about it.
  • Now copes with servers that include a total number of files with the file listing at the top. Thanks to Magnus Andersson for his help with this one.
  • Now doesn't crash if you click a link in the about window without OpenURL installed.
  • The local browser thread didn't properly keep track of how many messages it was expecting a reply for, and could sometimes hang around waiting for responses it had already received. Fixed.
  • If you started some local-to-local transfers, and one of them failed for any reason, the ones after it wouldn't start. Fixed.
  • Local-to-local transfers that had a read or write error during transfer were treated as if they succeeded. Fixed.
  • If a transfer failed, it would be silently added to the failed transfer list, and an error message printed in the log. This is easily missed during bulk transfers. Now there is an error log for errors that occur during transfers, which pops up to let you know something went wrong. Items in bold are new ones since the last time the error log window was closed. Thanks to Mario Cattaneo for making me get around to this finally :)
  • Improved the error handling and detection for SFTP.
  • If you selected more than one directory, but no files, and deleted them, only the first one would be deleted. Fixed. (Thanks to Janne Peräaho for the report).
  • If you deleted a directory, but no files, the browser wouldn't be refreshed aftwards. Fixed. (Thanks to Janne Peräaho for the report).
  • Added a debug menu to make it easier to find and fix faults that i can't reproduce

Rupert Hausberger (ANF)

MorphOS: Harddrive encryption with DIL 1.50
DIL ("Device Intervention Layer") written by Rupert Hausberger adds new virtual drives to the system which represent images of a real existing drives (or devices). If you access to such a virtual device the data stream will be changed, encrypted or controled in this way and only then the data stream will be delivered to the real drive.

With AES.dilp there is a new plugin which makes the encryption of the harddrive at the lowlevel base with AES possible. The changes in version 1.50 im detail:

dil.device (1.50)
  • Added support for SHA256 so plugins can now request that seed-type.
  • Added plugin-tags DILI_SeedDIL and DILI_SeedSHA to specify the seed-type used.
  • Now to passphrase-request window does popup another time if the user did a wrong input.
  • Fixed typo DILI_Licence to DILI_License.
  • Changed the DIL_SANEID, all plugins need a rebuild.
  • Bumped dilplugin.h to 1.2

dilPlugInfo (1.2)

  • Added plugin status, whether working with the installed version of DIL.
  • Added plugin tags DILI_SeedDIL and DILI_SeedSHA.

Plugins:
  • aes.dilp (1.00): Initial.
  • blockmon.dilp (1.12)
  • default.dilp (1.12)
  • poly.dilp (1.12): Rebuild with new DIL_SANEID.

Emulator: WinUAE 1.5.3
The latest version of the well-known Amiga emulator WinUAE includes optimizations for RTG-applications, some minor improvements of the chipset emulation and offers you the possibility to link certain file types (*.adf, *.uae...) with the emulator. The changes in WinUAE 1.5.3 in detail:

Fixed bugs:
  • Huge memory leak when switching between RTG and native modes.
  • Writing to disk images didn't work in some games.
  • Configuration cache missing files in subdirectories.
  • Random freeze when switching to fullscreen modes that are smaller than desktop resolution.
  • Second and third mouse/firebutton handling fix (Aladdin, BC.Kid and more)
  • "Always on top", "No taskbar button" and fullscreen color depth change works on the fly.
  • OpenGL fullscreen fixed.
  • Parallel/Serial/MIDI select menus and Input-panel bottom options didn't work correctly.
  • System clock run slightly too fast or slow if chipset refresh rate was different than startup refresh rate (really old bug).
  • OCS NTSC configuration defaulted to PAL refresh rate.
  • Real PCMCIA SRAM card re-insert detection fixed.
  • Fullscreen RTG 16-bit to 32-bit desktop windowed mode switch (CTRL+F12) color errors fixed.

New features:
  • Basic file association settings added to GUI (.uae, .adf etc..)
  • RTG vertical blank wait uses interrupts, no more busy waiting. Should improve performance in many fullscreen RTG games.
  • Added RTG virtual refresh rate configuration to GUI.
  • Added RTG refresh rate next to chipset refresh rate FPS counter.
  • Undocumented OCS "scanline" feature emulated (Ode to Ramon I and II)
  • Midline resolution change improvements (still far from perfect, Disposable Hero, Innovation Part 2)
  • Only accept current latest OpenAL32.dll or newer (old versions can cause crashes during device enumeration)
  • Improved emulation of reads from write-only custom registers (S.E.X. / Fantasys)
  • Syncronize Clock stability improved.

HivelyTracker 1.6
HivelyTracker is a tracker based on the AHX-format. AHX was developed in the 90ies to write music tracks which are similar to the typical chip-sound of SID (sound-chip of C64).

Changes:
  • Right since 1.0, the EDx command was broken! Fixed
  • The range check on Cxx commands was broken. Fixed
  • Now strips the upper nibble of 4xx instrument commands when loading a THX\0 file. AHX always did this since the introduction of filters (THX\1), but AFAIK WinAHX and its derivatives never did

Anubis OS: AROS-developers start new, Amiga-inspired operating system
Some active as well as former AROS-developers want to write a new operating system.

Anubis OS (still empty homepage) is not a Fork that means a branch of AROS because for lack of ressources no compatibility to AmigaOS 3.1 is aimed. Instead of it the Linux-based operating system is supposed to be inspired of AmigaOS. Because many of the developers will be no longer availble for AROS it might yet represent a disunion of the AROS-project.

There will be a first ISO-file with the developing status of Anubis OS around New Year. Mainly Anubis OS will be supposed to represent like Apple's Fusion of Mac OS and BSD to Mac OS X but based on AmigaOS and Linux. A main focus will be an easy to use user-interface. So the Linux basis will provide the functionality (e.g. 2D and 3D graphic drivers) but the user-interface will be inspired by Amiga.

The following AROS-developers are involved: Michal Schulz, Hogne Titlestad, Ola Jensen, Robert Norris, Michael Grunditz, Oliver Brunner, Olivier Tigreat, Pavel Fedin, Stanisław Szymczyk and Paul J. Beel. (snx) (Translation: dr)

OnyxSoft: AllKeys 2.3 and MultiRen 1.66
The OnyxSoft team has published two updates, AllKeys 2.3 and MultiRen 1.66. The first one is based on requests and bug reports of users. If you have further requests or suggestions then please do not hesitate to contact the developers.

AllKeys is a hotkey program for AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS which supports most of the multimedia and mouse keys. Additional to minor bug fixes version 2.3 supports different subclasses. Because of this some USB-keyboards should work much better.

MultiRen is a MUI-based Amiga/68k-program with which you can rename many files at once. It also includes a special plugin for MP3-files. In version 1.66 a plugin for ID3v2-tags was added. Additionally the file requester follows the corresponding windows where MultiRen has been opened. (snx) (Translation: dr)

Papyrus Office: Timeout-Requester forces new update
From the beginning of the month owners of the office package Papyrus have been welcomed with a message window that says that this beta version will expire.

According to Michael Garlich from Titan on pegasosforum.de there will be an additional update which will not include this timeout requester. But there will not be a MorphOS-native version of this update because the computer of the external developer as well as the Pegasos of the company do not work. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Some purchasers of AmigaOS 4.1 reported of copied manuals and burned CDs while others got a complete set with box, printed manual and proper CD (photo). Now Massimiliano "m3x" Tretene from ACube Systems explained in a discussion on amigaworld.net:

"We never sent photocopied manuals nor copied CDs to resellers or end users. It was just a measure a few resellers took to minimize delivery time to customers (there was a delay printing the CDs)". (cg) (Translation: dr)

Keyboard adapter: Lyra2 with support for MMKeyboard-Stealth protocol
Press release: The company Individual Computers produces a new keyboard adapter called Lyra2 which supports the MMKeyboard Stealth protocol and thus is compatible to the former reference, the MMKeyboard hardware.

With this new adapter you can use standard PS/2-keyboards with classic Amiga computers. Lyra2 is the only hardware which officially supports the MMKeyboard Stealth protocol and thus supports all available multimedia keys with the MMKeyboard software.

The adapter is very compact and stout. With its long wire it is als an extension and prevents the port from damaging by components.
