Tool: Audio decompression with QoaToAiff 0.2
The relatively new "Quite OK Audio Format" (QOA) is a lossy audio compression format: audio signals (44100hz, stereo) are encoded at 278 kbits/s, exactly 1/5 of the bits required for an uncompressed WAV file (amiga-news.de reported).
Grzegorz Kraszewski has written a decoder that converts QOA files into uncompressed AIFF (source code on GitHub). In version 0.2, he has implemented output buffering and the hard disc operations are now faster. (dr)

First stable version of a native 64-bit AROS
Krzysztof 'deadwood' Śmiechowicz has released the first version of AROS for x86-64, labelled "stable". The basic system is available in two versions: as a bootable ISO file or in a 'hosted' edition that runs under Linux. Virtual machines (VMware, Virtualbox or QEMU) are recommended as a test environment for this first release: Audio, video and network drivers have been improved and tested for this use case.
In the coming months, a 64-bit version of the Odyssey Web Browser with a significantly more up-to-date version of the WebKit engine is to be released, and the 'latest Amiga emulation cores' are also to be equipped with a 64-bit JIT and better integrated into the system. AROS distributions based on the now published base system are also already in development.
A corresponding thread has been opened on arosworld.org for discussions about this 64-bit version of AROS. (cg)

Emulation: QEMU 10.0 / bboot 0.8
QEMU is an open-source computer emulator and virtualizer. The emulation of complete computers also makes it possible to run operating systems such as AmigaOS 4 or MorphOS under QEMU that are tailored to a quite specific hardware platform. This support is provided by QEMU developer Zoltan Balaton, who clearly summarises the possibilities on a specially created and now redesigned website.
QEMU is now available in version 10.0.0, Windows installers are provided as usual by Stefan Weil.
Version 0.8 of the bootloader "bboot" for loading AmigaOS 4 on QEMU-emulated AmigaOne and Pegasos2 machines, which was released by Zoltan Balaton about a month ago, requires the options -kernel, -initrd and -append for the amigaone machine, which are now available in QEMU 10.0. This makes it easier to use and is similar to pegasos2. Older bboot versions still require the -device loader options and will not work with -kernel on amigaone. Since the amigaone emulation might have less problems than pegasos2 (and is still available), according to Zoltan Balaton this might be a better choice now.
Finally, the developer has created a new subpage on VFIO device drivers under Linux: VFIO is a device driver that is used to assign virtual machines to devices and thus enable full access to a specific GPU, for example.
As he adds to us, the use of a GPU with VFIO on qemu-system-ppc is currently still experimental and would take some effort to set up. However, some users have managed to achieve usable results: it is therefore possible in principle, even if it is not easy to implement. (dr)

Worth a read: Why computers were more fun before
In his latest article, "Honest and Elitist Thoughts on Why Computers Were More Fun Before", published on Datagubbe.se, Swedish tech nerd and software developer Carl Svensson reflects on the development of computer use and argues that computers were more fun before they became accessible to everyone. He argues that the complexity of the technology at the time and the need to engage intensively with it fostered a deeper connection and greater understanding of the devices.
The article highlights how the simplification and commercialisation of technology have led to many users today having only superficial knowledge and losing their former enthusiasm for discovering and understanding technology.
A worthwhile read for anyone interested in the history of computer use and cultural changes in the digital world. (nba)

Aiostreams V1.7.8: Scripts for streaming videos (AmigaOS 4, MorphOS)
"All In One streams" (aiostreams) is a pack of scripts, written in Python, that can be used to stream and watch videos from different online networks, like Twitch.tv, YouTube and Vimeo.com. All the scripts are developed and fully tested under AmigaOS 4.1 FE and MorphOS 3.x. which are the target systems of George 'walkero' Sokiano's project. Changes of version 1.7.8:
Changed
- Changed the youtube script to support urls like https://youtu.be/AbcdefghiJk
- Changed the youtube script to return an error message when the url is not compatible
Fixed
- Fixed the version string removing the double "vv"
- Fixed the youtube script when searching for videos to not crash when the results do not have a videoid
As a companion to these scripts, he created the website AIOstreams which can be a fast way to discover Twitch videos. It is really fast and can be used on older browsers that do not support Javascript and CSS. This is a proxy website. No data is stored in any database, there is no tracking and no authentication is required. (dr)

Shoot'em Up: Demo version of "Wings of Fear"
Around a week ago, we reported on the preview video for the shoot'em up "Wings of Fear". Now the developer has released a demo version of his game, which is still in the alpha phase and is being created using the Scorpion Engine. He wants to use it to gather constructive feedback and suggestions on how he can improve his game.
The minimum requirements are an ECS Amiga with 1 MB Fast RAM, 1 MB Chip RAM and a 68000 CPU, with which the game runs "painfully slowly" according to the author. AGA, 2MB chip RAM and 1 MB fast RAM as well as a 68020 CPU are recommended. (dr)

Press release: Alinea Computer is pleased to be able to offer another port by Steffen Häuser. Steffen has taken care of the porting of the latest version 3.3.3 and the installation routines for easy installation under AmigaOS 4. Stratagus is the port of the engine in version 3.3.3, which makes it possible to play the game Warcraft 2 from Blizzard Entertainment natively on the Amiga under AmigaOS 4.
The archive contains an installer with which it is possible to install the game directly from the PC CD without pre-installing it on the PC. At least for the Warcraft 2 Classic PC CD, for the Battle.Net CD or the Gog version it is necessary to unpack a file with a Windows tool, but with the Classic CD you can install directly on the Amiga.
Warcraft 2 is one of the most famous strategy games of all time, practically the prequel to the famous MMO "World of Warcraft". In addition to the base game "Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness", the add-on CD "Warcraft 2: Beyond the Dark Portal" (already included in the Battle.Net CD and Gog version) is also supported.
Stratagus is based on the current "latest Git" version of the Stratagus project (version 3.3.3). In contrast to an earlier implementation, 3.3.3 offers the following features:
- Iconic game music and not just sound effects (the music files are only installed with the Warcraft 2 Classic CD and the Battle.net CD, but can be copied manually afterwards when using the Gog version).
- The game's video sequences (video sequences not available on AmigaOne A1222)
- A functional level editor
- Numerous bug fixes
Of course, the localisation of Warcraft 2 into different languages is also supported.
Stratagus is under GPL licence, the source code of the Amiga version will be integrated into the github of the PC version in the foreseeable future, but is also available as a request by e-mail (see readme for details).
The minimum requirements for Stratagus are:
- A computer with AmigaOS 4.1 FE Update 2 or higher
- Special executables optimised for the respective platforms (x1000, x5000, Sam 440, Sam 460, G3 and A1222) can be selected during installation.
Note: This version only offers the single-player campaigns, without multiplayer. (cg)

Unofficial successor: Action Replay 5 DeMoN cartridge
An improved Action Replay cartridge for the Amiga 500 and WinUAE has been developed using reverse engineering. The hardware component is DeMoN, the software is called Action Replay 5.
The Action Replay III was a popular plug-in module for the Amiga 500, 1000 and 2000 that offered developers and gamers various functions to access the system's hardware more deeply. The main function was the use of the hardware as a cheat module, with which the Amiga could be "slowed down" using a potentiometer in order to successfully master tricky game situations. Game data stored in the working memory of a currently running game could be changed, for example to give yourself more life. Bypassing copy protection mechanisms or "ripping" music, samples or images and many other functions were also possible with Action Replay III and its predecessors on the Amiga. (snx)

Pressemitteilung Bassano del Grappa, Italy - 14 April 2025
ACube Systems is pleased to announce a new release of the U-Boot firmware for its Sam440 line of motherboards.
Following the recent update for the Sam460 (amiga-news.de reported), the Sam440 now also benefits from enhanced support, including compatibility with NVMe SSDs. Additionally, this update introduces support for Radeon RX and Radeon HD graphics cards.
This release represents a significant investment of time and resources. Nevertheless, we have chosen to offer it at the symbolic price of ¤3.99.
Highlights of this release include:
- Support for Radeon RX graphics cards (*)
- Improved support for Radeon HD graphics cards (*)
- NVMe SSD driver: boot directly from NVMe devices using a PCIe adapter (*)
- Driver for the PCIe SATA2 Silicon Image 3132 controller, with support for booting from SSDs and DVDs (*)
- Enhanced RAM access speed on Sam440ep-flex boards
- New graphical interface style
- Revised sata command, now displaying more detailed information about drivers and connected devices
- Serial console improvements: menu navigation via the W (up) and S (down) keys
- General bug fixes and overall improvements
- Unified source code for the 460ex and 440ep platforms
Features marked with an asterisk (*) require a PCI-to-PCIe bridge.
Radeon RX and Radeon HD graphics cards also require a specific driver (to be sold separately by A-EON Technology once available) for use with AmigaOS 4.
The update is available through our online store.
For those not comfortable performing the update themselves, we also offer pre-programmed, fully updated U-Boot chips.
Additional Information: UBoot makes use of GPL-licensed code and is therefore released under the terms of the GPL (download of UBoot source code, download of Parthenope source code). (dr)

Tool: Audio decompression with QoaToAiff 0.1
The relatively new "Quite OK Audio Format" (QOA) is a lossy audio compression format: audio signals (44100hz, stereo) are encoded at 278 kbits/s, or more precisely at 3.2 bits per sample - exactly 1/5 of the bits required for an uncompressed WAV file. It is therefore less complex than the well-known OGG Vorbis and MP3 formats, but still significantly smaller than lossless file formats (see also a corresponding German (siehe auch einen entsprechenden heise.de article).
According to Grzegorz Kraszewski, this could also be a good alternative for the Amiga in terms of computing effort, quality and file size. He has implemented a decoder in M68k assembler and written a tool that converts QOA files into uncompressed AIFF (source code on GitHub). The author points out that this version is not yet optimised and does not use 68020+ instructions. (dr)

Cross-compiler/assembler: Calypsi 5.10
"Calypsi" is a collection of compilers and assemblers that run under Windows, Linux and macOS and can generate code for various retro platforms - 6502 and 68000 processors are supported, among others. Although the project is hosted on Github, the source code is not freely available and use of the tools is only permitted for private purposes. Changes in version 5.10:
- _Static_assert could cause an internal error.
- A function call returning a struct with at least two internal layers of struct or union, immediately accessing a single element on return from the function call would result in an internal error.
- A bit-field of size 0 which fills out the current container, incorrectly caused an extra empty container to be allocated if the current one was not empty.
- Casting a static data address to a function pointer could in some situations cause an internal error.
- 68000: Bit-fields layout order is now big endian in the container, placing the first bit-field of the container in the leftmost position.
- Amiga: Correct the SysBase macro in the Amiga board support.
- 68080: Fix incorrect code generation using extub.l when it should have masked with a small constant instead.
- Amiga: Loading the FD file for the CIA library caused an internal error as it has multiple base addresses and pass them along as parameters instead of using a global variable.
- 6502/65816: The overloadable attribute caused a segmentation fault if the function type had address space qualifiers, e.g. __zpage on 6502 or __far on the 65816.
- 6502: Volatile address operands could in some situations cause an internal error.

Paint program: PolarPaint for all Amiga systems
PolarPaint is an experimental paint program written with Hollywood that requires a fast computer with RTG, at least a resolution of 1440x900x16 (program window is 1400x820), at least 40 MB free Fast RAM (64 MB or more recommended) and is available for AmigaOS 3, AmigaOS 4, MorphOS, AROSx86 and WOS.
As the author Anbjørn Myren explains when asked, he had read a thread in the Hollywood forum about how to draw a continuous line. He started experimenting with the examples in the thread and his original idea was to develop a kind of drawing/guessing game in the style of Telestrations.
And he continued to write to us: "For this I just needed a simple interface and the ability to draw a black and white sketch. This was in late 2023, but I was doing other stuff so I put it on hold for some time. In late 2024 I started to experiment some more with it, but instead of making it into an online game, I got more interested to see what drawing features I could add.
I was a bit unsure to release it on aminet, especially the 68k version since it requires more horsepower than usually found in 68k Amigas. But I figured it might run at a usable speed on NG Amigas and hopefully PiStorm or perhaps Vampire systems.
Testing it on WinUAE made me discover the high RAM consumption, which made me come up with the diskbuffer idea. This saves a lot of RAM for most operations, but might result in slowdowns when loading saving disk when changing workspaces. As a bonus the diskbuffering will make backups of your work and also the undo buffer, so if you quit the program it will load your images and undo buffers on next startup so you can start where you left off.
Another thing that can use a lot of RAM is the custom flood fill procedure. I made that procedure because I wanted to have a was to floodfill with a threshold setting, similar to what you can find in Gimp. When floodfilling with threshold set above 0 it will consume a lot of memory. As a workaround for this I made an additional setting so you can restrict how big area to fill in one operation. By default this is set to maximum 5% of the workspace area. This mean you will only fill a small area at the time, but hopefully you avoid to terminate the program with a out of memory error.
If you have more than around 150MB free RAM I guess you can get away with a 100% setting, but it will take a lot of time for larger areas to complete on slower systems." (dr)

Source code editor: Hollywood 10 support for Visual Studio Code 10.0.2
For Microsoft's Visual Studio Code (Windows, Mac OS, Linux), "hw4vsc" is an extension that enables the development of Hollywood programmes with the free source code editor (amiga-news.de reported). The developer Micha J. has adapted his extension for the latest Hollywood 10 version and has just released hw4vsc v10.0.2.
Although the version number was only increased on the patch level, this is a massive release. It adds improved intellisense/code completion with proper code completion and quick info for all inbuilt Hollywood 10 functions, preprocessor commands and including constants (no quick info/help here, unfortunately). The README.md shows an example of intellisense in action.
The author asks you to use the Github bug tracker in case of problems. (nba)

Mining strategy game: The history of "Aminer"
"Last Minute Creations", a Polish group of Amiga game developers (e.g. GermZ or Chaos Arena), spent more than six years working on their mining strategy game "Aminer": set in the Soviet era, the aim is to fulfil the planned economic extraction plans and mine precious metals such as silver for the Ministry of Mining and Fossil Fuels:
"Last Minute Creations" consists of 'KaiN', who writes the code, 'Luc3k', who is responsible for the music and 'Softiron', who is responsible for all graphic tasks.
We asked the coder 'KaiN' how the idea for the project came about and why Aminer, which was presented at the Polish retro party RAM#3 last weekend, took so long to develop:
"We started the project approximately a month before the RetroKomp 2018 party, for the game compo. We were working on OpenFire at that time, but I thought that it'd be cool to show something new at the party, so I've quickly came up with a game I wanted to tackle for some time now.
At this point it was a silly little game where you just dig through the ground without any objective and collect the resources, and also had a challenge mode where the camera goes at the constant speed towards the finish line and you must collect the resources to get the high score.
The idea behind the game was that I really liked the Motherload game from the Flash games era, and I wanted to do a semi-infinite Y scroll on Amiga hardware, so it was mostly a tech demo wrapped together as a RK18 game compo entry - it scored 2nd place and you can see on Pouet.net that it looked a bit differently back then.
Still, the audio was very buggy, because it was my groups first entry to even have audio code at all - we used my own ACE library, which I'm developing for 11 years now and those 6.5 years ago it lacked some serious features - it's now a lot more better since it got all the features needed to create the Aminer.
The game is written entirely in C, with one small part written in C++ for convenience, using the ACE library as I've mentioned. 'Softiron' uses Pro Motion NG for his pixels. For audio of the game compo version, I used sfxr to have some basics blips and blops. After all those years the pickup sound is still from the original version.
At this point we even didn't have an audio guy in our roster, but then we found Lucek on the Polish forums, and he did an amazing job of creating the matching soundtrack for the game. He also did the remaining audio stuff.
One of the main challenges was to determine what do we want to do with this game - we basically had no idea. After we did the demo for compo, 'Softiron' wasn't too happy with the state of the game and wanted to expand it a bit more. We've brainstormed a bit, I came with a little bit of ideas - mostly mimicking the Motherload game, so vehicle part upgrades, underground bases for convenience and that's about it. 'Softiron' on the other hand took that thing to the next level by inventing the whole soviet setting and adding a lot of side mechanics not really related with the digging itself - it's funny because you can finish the whole game without digging too much.
The other challenge was to stay on target and that's mostly because of me. During the pandemic, I thought it'd be nice to release another game to the Revision game compo, so we've started working on GermZ. We've missed the deadline, it then took us a whole lot of time to make this game enjoyable. We've also released two other games for game compos in the meantime: Atarenium Falkon (with code by 'Lucek!') and Chaos Arena, both released in Decrunch party game compos. As you can see we just can't leave a compo without an entry.
Another challenge was to settle on final features. 'Softiron' had lots of ideas for this game, including adding a way to go to moon and dig there, and we had to cut many of them to release the game at foreseeable time. We've also had the hard time with balancing the gameplay due to a lot of different allowed playstyles, mechanics and lots of content. It also became not so simple game, so it no longer would be enjoyed by younger or less demanding audiences. I've mitigated that by adding a Sandbox mode in final weeks, which resembles the free digging mode from the compo version with some basic limited move count mechanics. The most difficult thing for me personally was to get the mood right. Since the game is set in the soviet era in not-so-fictional country, and touches on totalitarian regimes of the past, I hope the game won't be viewed as making those things "cool", because they really aren't. And we shouldn't forget about this, especially now that one of them is coming back from hiatus.
Besides all these explanations, why did it ultimately take so long? Well, we did:
- 3 kilometers of the underground mine to explore
- 8 NPCs
- 7 distinct endings
- 3 underground bases with base building mechanics
- 18 achievements
- 3 game modes and a co-op variant of each mode
- 2 language versions
- more than 20 minutes of soundtrack
- definitely no secrets
- all that crammed into a single floppy disk, if you want to torture yourself with loading times
If you want to take on the task and dig through the earth, you need an OCS Amiga with 1MB chip RAM and 1MB other RAM. The source code is available on GitHub. (dr)

Point'n Click adventure: Demo version of Soltys released
Pawel 'tukinem' Tukatsch has released a short demo version of the point'n click adventure game "Soltys" (video), which was originally developed by the Polish studio LK Avalon and released for MS-DOS in 1995 (Wikipedia).
However, as the author emphasises, his game is not a port, but a completely rewritten version of the original game. In addition to Polish subtitles, there are also English, German, Spanish and Italian subtitles. An Amiga computer with AGA chipset, at least 1 MB Fast RAM and harddisk are required. (dr)

The demo party ‘Revision’ will traditionally take place on the Easter weekend at the ‘E-Werk’ in Saarbrücken. However, the organisers are still looking for volunteers:
Press release: Revision is the biggest pure demoscene event in the world - and roundabout 70 volunteers make it possible. Come join us to have the best Easter weekend for you, us, and the demoscene! We are looking for people with the English skill and attitude that make them great working in a multi-national team, and who are as excited as we are to make this party great for everyone.
You'll need to be in the E Werk from super-latest Friday morning before Revision to the Monday, to help us build up and tear everything down as far as you can. Being on time and reliable is very important to everyone in your team, so we're able to share the workload fairly.
If you've been an orga at a demoparty before you'll know the score, but previous experience is not essential.
Are you interested, especially in the opening posted below? Then drop us a message at hotline-2025@revision-party.net!
