Video: Tower 57 playing on the "Tabor" motherboard (update)
In a blog entry Hyperion shows the crowdfunded shooter Tower 57, which will be also released for AmigaOS 4. Daniel Müßener is developing the port for OS4 and has created a special version of the game for the Tabor motherboard ("A1222") presenting the current stage of development. A video showing the game on an AmigaOne A1222 gives an impression. The developer wrote, that the version for the Tabor would run "a lot faster than on a sam460ex" - explaining: "Tower57 is some kind of special case though, primarily because I do pure software rendering inside this Amiga port, so the program doesn't have to comunicate floats directly to other libraries, roughly spoken."

Hint of the editorial staff: The processor QorIQ P1022, part of Tabor, uses a FPU which is incompatible to most of the Power Processors, also that ones, which are used in the AmigaOS 4 computers. In order to make it compatible to existing AmigaOS 4 software, the operating system has to have a compatibility layer, which currently none of us knows any information or details. Therefore it is not clear if this special Tabor edition of the game was created due to speed or compatibility reasons.

Update: (17.02.2017, 15:00 Uhr, cg)

As one of our readers in our German comments has pointed out, there are more information on the YouTube website concerning a normal build of the game:

"The "normal" Tower57 FPU build works too on the Tabor btw. In that case, as with all other FPU-using programs, the OS' current compatibility backend kicks in and "translates" each and every FPU-opcode into something the Tabor likes. Interesting enough: even then the Tabor is so powerful that it's still playable (about 20fps where the sam460 reaches about 30fps)." (cg) (Translation: dr)

Assembler: vasm 1.7h
Frank Wille has released an update of the assembler vasm. As usual Wille does not provide vasm binaries except with the vbcc compiler distribution. If you are interested in, you have to compile the assembler on your own. Changes in version 1.7h:
  • Implemented a dynamic line buffer. No limitations on line lengths anymore
  • Octal escape sequences are limited to a maximum of three digits
  • Allow assembler text output (echo, printv) in offset sections
  • Print a warning for initialized data in a bss-type section. This already worked in the past (1.2c and later), but has been lost somewhere
  • Some single-character labels and symbols will be rejected (depending on the syntax module)
  • -maxerrors=0 should print all errors in the source
  • Print expressions in the listing file and the test output in decimal and hexadecimal form
  • m68k: Immediate- and PC-relative destination addressing modes for 68851 PMOVE are not allowed. PMOVE ea,PCSR doesn't exist
  • 6502: Perform zero-page optimization with a known label from an absolute section
  • std-syntax: Fixed problem with parentheses in character constants
  • oldstyle-syntax: New option -org=<address> to set the absolute base address of the program from the command line
  • oldstyle-syntax: Implemented some listing file directives, but without any function yet: nam, subttl, page, space
  • bin-output: Fixed output section sorting, which didn't work with some implementations of qsort()
  • elf-output: Fixed external references in stabs
  • elf-output: Use a hash table for ELF symbols to speed up the output
  • hunk-output: Optimization to make it faster with many sections
  • test-output: Fixed crash when printing stabs without a value
