A.D.A.: Seven new demos online
A.D.A., the 'Amiga Demo Archive' has undergone an extensive update and offers the following new demos:

  • Dream or Reality/Faculty and Nah Kolor. Famous slideshow from Faculty and Nah Kolor, featuring pictures by Unreal. Mostly fantasy inspired (dragons), this slideshow features some nice pictures.
  • Noname/Polka Brothers. Released at the South Sealand party in 1994 (ranking unknown). This is pure Polka Brothers style, meaning fast effects and lots of energy. Some nice fullscreen pictures and a stunning tune by Slide (as usual). A bit too short. Recommended!
  • Nonstop/DCS. "Dcs brings you the first 40kb sing-along karaoke intro ever featuring le ball du metaux, head objects, possibility to sing along, effects, secret breakdance mode, oldschool atmosphere and no greetings part". Need i say more? Released at The Party 1999 (1st place).
  • Sketch/Venture. Technically not really impressive, this demo features some amazing design, making it a very stylish little production. Released in August 1998 at Intel Outside 5 (3rd place).
  • Sumolysbryter/Ephidrena. Yes, the famous crew from Norway is back with a new demo! Featuring Loaderror, Cheetah and Zixaq, this demo was released at Kindergarden 2003 where it achieved first place. Very stylish design backed up by a nice elektro tune. High quality, as can be expected from the masters of design. More please!
  • Alien 2/Scoopex. Released at The Party 1998 where it ranked 1st at the demo competition. A 3D story demo with 2D effects in between. Cool music from Muffler and Virgill. Recommended if you are interested in 3D story demos.
  • Brain Overdrive/Software Failure. It's always easy to search for credits from Software Failure intros: Code: Ham, Gfx: Ham, Music: Ham, 3D: Ham (talk about multitalented). Originally released at Euskal 10 in July 2002, Ham released the final version some weeks ago. And a very fine intro it is!

TV-card driver: SuperTV beta version 0.8 for Mediator
Today Peter Gordon has released the beta version 0.8 of SuperTV (an alternative to the Mediator TV software by Elbox). This version fixes some bugs and offers new features.

Download: stv_beta_0-8.lha

Changes since the last version:
  • "Hide pointer" now has 3 modes: Never, Fullscreen only, and Always. F2 now cycles between never and always.
  • Added option to cycle through channels (ie hitting + at the last channel will cycle to channel 1).
  • Two new arexx commands: TV_INCCHANNEL, TV_DECCHANNEL. These increment and decrement the channel, taking into account the cycle channels settings
  • Added possibility to put in custom source number. This allows colour SVHS on some cards.
  • I think i've zapped the enforcer hits now.
  • You can now toggle fullscreen with F3

New Soms3D shots, English translation and requests
A new update has been released on the 'Anime Development for Amiga' page. Two new screen shots of Soms3D have been added, furthermore an English translation is now available. This translation is "beta", thus the ADA team is looking for someone to go and correct all the errors.

Furthermore the ADA team is looking for people who know Milkshape3D or a mesh animator which supports the MD2 format (used e.g. Quake2). Also raytracers are still most welcome in the ranks of the ADA team. (ps) (Translation: cb)

Demo scene: Home page for current Amiga demos & ASCIIs
Completely undetected, Dutch demo scener Jpv of the group Rave Network Overscan has been offering all demos and ASCII collections released since August 2001 for download on his homepage.

Former visitors of boards (mailboxes) which ran on Amiexpress or Fame will feel immediately at home there. The home page gets updated immediately after the release of new demos, intros, disk mags, slide shows, packs or ASCII collections. Thus, e.g. all publications of the recently held Kindergarten Party are available. All in all a good source for providing yourselves with material from the demo scence. (ps) (Translation: cb)

Programmer wanted for project 'Fli4l on Amiga'
Oliver 'Bladerunner' Hummel writes:
Maybe some of you know the software router package fli4l (see title link). With this software and a 486 it is possible, to create a fairly comfortable Linux based hardware router. The whole thing works quite good, and also the collaboration with the Amiga works out excellently. The only downer so far: In order to create the required boot diskette, up to now a Windows/Linux PC is still needed.

Now I have looked a bit closer into the DOS batch file and realised that only two little programs are needed which as yet haven't been available on the Amiga. One is mkfli4l, a progam which checks the config files of fli4l and generates the file structure for the required Tar file, and Syslinux, a boot loader, which can also be used from DOS and writes a boot block onto a diskette.

The program mkfli4l wasn't overly complicated, in any case I have succeeded in porting the program after some time of trial and error (actually it was a simple recompile with gcc). I have also adapted the script so it is in theory able to create a boot diskette. In practice, however, the program Syslinux is missing!

Thus now my question: Is it at all possible to use this program on the Amiga (of course one still would have to install an MS-DOS compatible file system on the Amiga) and if so, is there somebody out there who would port it? The whole thing doesn't seem to be especially extensive, only somebody would have to do it ;-) Btw, Syslinux can be found here: http://syslinux.zytor.com/.

If this whetted somebody's appetite, please contact me via e-Mail. (ps) (Translation: cb)

AmigaWorld: Weekly Q&A's with Fleecy Moss - episode 1
As announced by the English Internet magazine AmigaWorld, the magazine will ask Fleecy Moss, CTO at AMIGA, Inc., ten questions per week (Update 2012-03-17, cg: as the original document is no longer available, the following content was moved into our database):

1) Rebel: "Why SO silent? AInc has been quiet for months at a time, giving the naysayers, and rumour mongers a chance to do more damage, and divide the community even more.".

Fleecy: As my mother used to, and still does say to me 'Don't say anything unless you have something to say.' Keith Blakemore Noble pointed out on ANN that this is what we said we would do when we bought the company in 2000 and then we went back on this pledge. The problem we have, although it is a good problem is that the Amiga has a community and the community wants to know what is going on, more so given the nightmare of the last eight years.

Our initial policy was thus to say nothing until we had news to share. With all the requests we then got for news, it became very difficult for us to keep to our policy. We thus resurrected the Executive Updates but in these we made the mistake of sharing status and progress information and as anyone in business knows, business is a distillation process - 100 leads may lead to 20 contacts which lead to 5 contracts which may, if you are lucky lead to 1 deal.

Even more unfortunate, the deals we were able to announce, the Sharp Zaurus, the Nokia MediaTerminal, the Sendo Z100 were pulled out from under us - the Zaurus for Sharp internal reasons, the MediaTerminal because of the collapse of ITV digital and another Germany company and the Sendo situation is well understood (although there is still hope there of a new deal based upon the unique advantages of the AmigaDE).

So, in terms of news items we haven't done too well.

To add to this (and many will shout and scream about this but it is true), Amiga Inc has been under attack from several groups who have other axes to grind, whether they want an x86 solution, AmigaOS open sourced, protection code and licencing removed from AmigaOS4.0 or want to encourage people to move to another platform whilst claiming it is an Amiga. Of course in a community there is disagreement but in a community that disagreement is either tolerated or the community splits apart. Everything we were saying in public was being taken apart and turned to support whatever was the position of the poster.

In the end, we decided to revert back to our original policy since it became apparent that all anyone really cared about was the release of AmigaOS4.0. This then brought us full circle to the original situation, that when saying nothing, noisemakers will rush to fill the silence. If you don't counteract the rumours then its because they are true and if you do pop up to counteract them then that must be because they are true. The only way to win is to get AmigaOS4.0 out the door and so that is what we are concentrating on at the moment.

Part of the reason for this Q&A service is to rubbish the claim that we won't talk to the community. We just won't say anything if it isn't 110% guaranteed anymore and that is the way people seem to want it.

2) SlimJim: "It is well known that this first release of AOS4 is mainly aimed for the existing user-base and eventual old Amigans. What is Amiga Inc's (overall) marketing strategy with respect to AmigaOS4 + Aone (once they become available)?".

Fleecy:

1. Move the community to new hardware and operating system.

2. Develop audio and 2d/3d productivity architectures with Amiga and non Amiga developers

3. Create applications to take advantage of these architectures to carve out solution markets

4. Support development of applications that round the appeal of the platform - browser, email client, word processor

5. Integrate with the AmigaDE to open access to multiple platform markets, both open and solution based

6. As we build the application base to where it can successfully provide for different roles, we will then push it out into those markets.

In short, there is no point in pushing the Amiga into a market where it is not yet ready to provide an adequate solution or it will die before it takes its first step. To do that we need the hardware, the operating system, the application base and the support services in place.

3) Herewegoagain: "Will they [Amiga Inc.] be negotiating with Microsoft to bring Internet Explorer, Outlook Express and Media Player to OS4?".

Fleecy: It is something we have considered but again, as with all the other application developers out there on other platforms, until we can plonk a machine and operating system in front of them, there is little point. The perennial problem, of course is that these companies are busy with their main activities and seeing their product ported to another platform, particularly one as small as the Amiga is not something that they wish to consider. In the end, they will only 'get out of bed' if there is a large market or we provide them with financial incentive.

4) alx: "Assuming everything goes to plan, at what point in the future will Amiga start to advertise the A1/OS (not just to Amigans)?".

Fleecy: I refer you back to question 2 - we will market and advertise when the full solution is ready for those markets. This doesn't mean that there won't be penetration. We have many journalists ready to review and write about the machines. Amiga is a big story to them because the Amiga was such a large part of people's lives in the past. We will have services in place to take advantage of and capture that interest, to make use of it when the conditions are right.

5) reflect: "Maybe I've missed this when I read the featurelist, but I couldn't see ARexx there. Will ARexx still be included, and if so, will it have gotten an overhaul internally or will it 'just' be ported or will it be emulated?"

Fleecy: The ownership issues surround the original ARexx implementation are well known and we have been unable to gain access to the source. The existing 68k ARexx binary will thus be emulated. We are reviewing the entire scripting and application control for both AmigaDE and AmigaOS4 as mentioned later on.

6) unclecurio: "What are AInc doing to attract past developers to produce updated versions of their software? For example, Photogenics has ceased development for AmigaOS but would be a great product to bring back in an updated version.".

Fleecy: We are working in the background but I don't want to go into too much detail as it has become apparent that competitors are approaching the same people and trying to tie them into exclusive deals that would keep their products from AmigaOS4.0. Providing them with a list of who we are approaching, both within the Amiga community and on other platforms would really be doing their work for them. Suffice it to say that we are being as open as we can with all the developers that we have been able to locate still developing for the AmigaOS and with one or two exceptions, they are very receptive to what we have been able to tell them.

7) Eric_Z: "Is A.inc. currently involved in porting over office apps to AACE or OS4?".

Fleecy: For Amiga Anywhere, we are encouraging development of the applications that our customers are telling us they want, and this is almost always games. However, we do have customers who have requested education and productivity software and we have one of the best calculators ever created on a software platform and a digital picture application that is impressing lots of people. In the end, we encourage and work on whatever is being asked for.

8) mood: "Will there be any Amiga-Anywhere/AmigaDE-player for AmigaOS 4.x?".

Fleecy: We have already stated that we are targeting an AACE player for AmigaOS4.2

9) DaveW: "Is SHEEP the scripting language that looked rather cool available or going to be available this year for Amiga based programmers to get their hands on?".

Fleecy: We are currently reviewing SHEEP in the context of the AmigaDE and AmigaOS4 and looking at how it can be used to bring the two together as both are moved forwards and towards each other.

10) Pig: "Where do you see the company in 5 years, and where do you see AmigaOS at that time?".

Fleecy: I hope that we are on many different types of device and providing a seamless digital enviroment for users irrespective of their hardware. We have a marketing slogan we use, the new WWW, which means Whatever, Wherever, Whenever.

CeBIT 2003: promised screenshots arrived
As Martin Heine promised in his last report he has now real screenshots of Ambient, the settings (Prefs), Win95 and Word made available. You can find these screenshots following the title link.

Martin Heine, right now at the Genesi booth at the CeBIT 2003: "Besides, I measured the time Win95 and Word needed here on our G3/600. I have to note that I don't know whether this setup here of the CeBIT computers can be optimized any further or not as I myself don't have any experiences with Bochs yet. Nevertheless I stopped the following times:

Initialisation until the first text output (what's displayed after switching on a PC: BIOS, units, "Windows is being loaded"): 45 seconds.

Launching Windows until it is loaded: 1 minute 20.

Launching Word until it is ready to use: 20 seconds."

CeBIT 2003: Report and photos from Ron van Herk

A short summary of some of the things happening here at CeBIT from Ron van Herk

1. We have nearly finalized our agreement with our new Russian Distributor. MorphOS will have a Russian localisation and will become successful in Russia. Genesi's André Siegel will work as an 'interface' between the new distributor and the developers that need to get this done. Russian programmers interested in assisting this process can receive a fully configured Pegasos in exchange for their work. In the bigger picture, once the Russian localisation is done we will have a model to do the same in other languages and localisations.

2. 3Sat visited Genesi today and shot footage of the Pegasos, the Psylent, MorphOS, etc. We showed MorphOS working with several apps, games and the Internet which they all filmed. The editor, Ralph Benz is a long-time Amiga user and is very enthusiastic! We gave him a bunch of T-Shirts to give to viewers (or to keep for themselves). Not a bad deal for free TV coverage I'd say ;-)

Enclosed are two pics, 1 high-res foto of the desktop case and one of me and Robert Han of Plexuscom with the Psylent.

That's all for now.

Sincerely, Ron (ps)
