AmigaOSXL: Experiences with the H&P Big-Tower 1800+ (Update) Dietmar Knoll: In my report I describe the experiences I made with the Big-Tower. These now reach from the delivery until the first experiences in everyday usage. The sixth update of my experiences report includes a test of the network card and a hint to the BoingBag3.9-2. As the most important news I can communicate the installation of more software, about which I compiled a software list. The next things I plan to do is install BoingBag2 and then have a closer look at AmigaXL. (ps) [News message: 22. Mar. 2002, 16:59] [Comments: 2 - 23. Game: NetHack 3.4.0 The new version 3.4.0 of Nethack is available for download. Versions for several platforms such as Linux, MS-DOS, Windows3.1, Windows 95/98/NT/2000/Me/XP, Macintosh and Amiga exist. What is NetHack? NetHack is a single player dungeon exploration game that runs on a wide variety of computer systems, with a variety of graphical and text interfaces all using the same game engine. Unlike many other Dungeons & Dragons-inspired games, the emphasis in NetHack is on discovering the detail of the dungeon and not simply killing everything in sight - in fact, killing everything in sight is a good way to die quickly. Each game presents a different landscape - the random number generator provides an essentially unlimited number of variations of the dungeon and its denizens to be discovered by the player in one of a number of characters: you can pick your race, your role, and your gender. For information on running the program see the README that comes with each copy. (ps) (Translation: rh) [News message: 22. 22.Mar.2002 MobiliX |
Trademark Trouble: Asterix versus MobiliX As already reported on 26.01.2002, Werner Heuser, administrator of the open source project MobiliX - UniX on Mobile Computers has received a request from the German legal representative of "Lés Editions Albert René", owners of the trademark of the name Obelix, in November 2001. Werner Heuser sent the plaintiffs a 22 page response (PDF). His arguments were rejected, though, by the legal representative of the trademark owner. Werner Heuser: "Remarkable in the document are the insults at the end, which don't seem usual for writings from lawyers. The legal trouble is documented since its beginning at the MobiliX webpages and is discussed in many mailing lists and news groups. This seems to have impressed the plaintiffs. They now accuse MobiliX of inventing "a new kind of electronical terror", and are ready to sentence MobiliX. It will be interesting to know, which sentence the plaintiff will invent against critical discussion in newsgroups." Despite the announcements of the plaintiffs, the case goes on: The court in Munich (Germany) has set the date for the first hearing to June 12th 2002.
At the title link you'll find more interesting details about this trademark trouble. (ps) (Translation: rh) |

Polish Department of amiga-news.de Celebrates 2nd Birthday For two years now, Piotr Pawlowski has been making amiga-news.de available on his website for Polish readers in their native language. Tireless, beyond-the-call-of-duty efforts are needed to translate the many daily articles, but this goes without saying. One must be involved often with various issues, and this certainly cuts into one's free time. So at this time we want to give a great "hurrah" and a big, heartfelt "thank you!"
And, not to forget, a "happy second birthday!" :) (ps) (Translation: dm) |

Virus Help Denmark: xvs.library v33.38 Georg Hoermann & Jan Erik Olausen has just released a new update of the antivirus library "xvs.library", the update is now available for download at our homepage. The xvs.library contains all the virus recognition and removal code that was formerly included in VirusZ. This step has been taken for one major reason: VirusZ, Virus_Checker, Virus_Executor and all the other antivirus software can be updated quickly without releasing the whole packages every time a new virus appears. So simply install the xvs.library from this archive to your LIBS: drawer to get 100% protection against the latest viruses. To be able to check if the library in this archive really came straight from one of the authors, you can use the public key with the .sig files in the archive. If you are not sure or do not trust the included key, then you can always request the original straight from one of us (by email) or get it from the VHT-Denmark homepage. Here is some info about the update:
