SmartBoy with AmigaOS isn
Earlier this year announced the company Thendic GmbH the SmartBoy, a new handheld terminal that should be equipped with AmigaDE. Since then nothing had happened and the company was silent. Today I got (finally) the answer from Horst Hug, who's working for Thendic, via email in which he wrote about the SmartBoy as follows:

  • The SmartBoy is indeed in development.
  • Pictures of the device can be accessed from the company's website (title link) under "Entwickler".
  • In the B2B version (Business-to-Business) the SmartBoy will be equipped with Windows CE 3.0.
  • In the B2C version (Business-to-Consumer) the SmartBoy may be equipped with the AmigaDE, at the moment we are testing the available software, at the end of the year a decision will be made.

Amiga makes statement about events in New York, U.S.A.
Today is indeed a difficult day for America and for the world.

We at Amiga lift up in prayer the families of those who were killed and injured in the attacks today.

It is truly a sad day for all of us, and our thoughts and prayers go out to our nation's leaders, as they must now deal with this situation.

God Bless us, and may we be ever mindful of our blessings.

e.p.i.c. interactive: Status Update
Empire builder Knights and Merchants is in dublication and will be shipping on september 19th. You can find more information on this real time strategy game in the projects section.

RPG/strategy mix GORKY 17 is finally coming along nicely. Here is a longer report on what is done and what still needs to be finished:

Conversion of the game data was among the toughest things with this project. One reason for this was that a Little Endian engine was required; the other was that the engine requires filemapping which is not available in Mac OS. These problems are now fixed (only some minor endian problems in the Load function need attention).
Gorkys 3D engine is running fine except for some colour problems as you can see from the screenshots below. The Zoom function also has a couple of minor problems. Porting of the engine was extremely difficult, because the original developers used a lot of Intel ASM routines. The remaining problems with the 3D engine are currently worked on and should be fixed within the next couple of days. The speed of the game is great even at this stage. On a 350 Mhz G3 it ran at the same speed as the PC version on a 700 Mhz machine. The game logic seems to be working fine, but intense beta testing on this part is set to start this week. Sound and video playback is not yet implemented. The other remaining problem is memory usuage. The game currently requires a lot of memory, especially under MacOS 9 where you will need about 200 MB to start the game . These problems do not exist with the MacOS X version.
Below you will find the first public screenshots from the Macversion. Note that they have been taken from the german version of the game. The first public presentation of GORKY 17 will be at the Paris show later this month.

Another project that is in the final stages of development is an arcade fun shooter. This is our first original release and it will come as a budget title to MacOS, Windows and MorphOS. Expect more information on this title in our projects section soon. (ps)

Event: Saku 2001 Displayed New Amiga Products
Saku 2001, the biggest Amiga event in Finland and organized by the Finnish Amiga Users Group, gathered about 300 visitors around Finland on September 1st. The venue was organized completely by volunteers and it proved that there is still a dedicated following of the Amiga in Finland.

Y One of the highlights of Saku 2001 was the demonstration by Cloanto's Michael C. Battilana. He showed the latest JIT compiler version of Amiga Forever emulation software, which will be available as a free upgrade to all Amiga Forever users. Michael also hinted that Cloanto will soon release a completely new software to the Amiga emulation community.

AmigaDE Party Pack was demonstrated with three computers, two if which also ran the AmigaDE Player demo version, which was supplied for Saku 2001 by Amiga Inc. Other programme included an Amiga demo marathon in the auditorium, a Payback game competition, Mediator PCI demonstration and a popular Vaporware registration service. ImageFX, Aladdin 4D, Shogo and AmigaOS 3.9 were also available for testing. The event also generated interest among the media.

Finnish Amiga Users Group wishes to thank all the event contributors and visitors for joining Saku 2001 and making it a memorable event. A photo report and an IRC log will be published later this week. A webcam picture collection will also be available soon. (ps)

New design and status update "Amiga FFE - Project"
At last a reworked version of the homepage is online, from today. This now (hopefully ,-) ) is more clear and more tidy than the last version.

Moreover the soundtrack can be downloaded in midi format (to have a try with Amidi) and all of the sound effects in wave and 8SVX format.

A little late, but nevertheless the project definition now was determined, so the basic frame of the project was set up.

As a next step now the IS analysis will come. For this anybody can send information about FFE to me. To prevent a "Yes, but what information shall I send?", just have a look at the (finally added) job list.

But many sections still are "under construction". Should there be any mistakes already now (dead links, typing errors, etc.), just send an e-mail.

Short summary: The AmigaFFE-Project is an "everyone's invited" project which shall lead to an Amiga port of the game Frontier First Encounters. (ps) (Translation: mj)

Offtopic: World Trade Center and Pentagon target of terror attacks
Even though this is off topic:

I just heard from radio and TV that both towers of the World Trade Center in New York, USA, tumbled down. At least two airplanes directly crashed into those. Also the Pentagon is on fire - probably by a car bomb or even another airplane (crash). New York looks direful. Any transatlantic flights to the USA have been stopped. (ps) (Translation: mj)

Ralf Himmel (E-Mail)

Event: Pictures of the Sharp exhibiton at the IFA-Berlin
Ralf Himmel visited the IFA and made a small movie. Due to the fact that this movie has a size of 15mb he extracted some pictures and wrote some lines about what is depicted.

The special thing about the AmigaDE seems to be that the whole control panel fly into the visible screen area from the left picture 1 (48 KB).

The controls of a game are looking realy cool. Picture 2 (64 KB) shows a megaball version. The blue background and the board came from the left side of the screen.

A program can be started by touching on a graphic of the controlpanel. Picture 3 (73 KB) shows a tetris clone. Apart from the costs it could become one of the most beautiful gameboys ever.

Picture 4 (82 KB) depicts the device running a 'normal' application that needs more power of the cpu then the AmigaDE (at least in my oppinion). This picture also shows that the display is still readable even if your point of view is not vertical above the device. (ps) (Translation: sk)
