Hyperion Entertainment changes status of Warp3D V4
Hyperion Entertainment changes status of Warp3D V4

We would like to inform you that after extensive deliberation, Hyperion Entertainment has decided to upgrade the status of Warp 3D V4 from a freeware product to a commercial OEM product which will offered to Amiga hardware developers for a moderate license fee.

This decision was prompted by two major reasons:
  1. Hyperion Entertainment has reached an agreement with Amiga Inc. to incorporate Warp3D V4 into Amiga OS 4.x on a per unit royalty basis. Producers of zico compliant hardware (Amiga One etc.) will be required to license Amiga OS 4.x and will as such be paying indirectly for Warp 3D V4 drivers. It would be unacceptable to both Amiga Inc. and these hardware producers that they would be required to pay royalties for a product which other hardware producers would receive free of charge.

  2. Warp 3D started out as a freeware product developed by non-commercial developers to support the Virge and Permedia 2 chipsets. Compared to current chipsets, the Virge and Permedia 2 are extremely primitive and feature-poor. The effort and time needed to adequately support modern chipsets such as the Voodoo 3 and Matrox G450 with their rich and advanced feature-set is far greater than the effort required to support the Virge and Permedia 2 chipsets. Combined with the fact that there are currently no less than 7 different PCI product from three different manufacturers, it's clear that the effort required to support modern chipsets on all the different PCI hardware available goes far beyond the scope of a freeware project.
As the original Warp 3D developers have now moved on to commercial development, maintaining Warp 3D as a freeware product would entail that development of new Warp 3D drivers and extension of the Warp 3D API would be very slow as development could only take place "after hours".

This is not only not in the interest of Amiga users but it is also not in the interest of hardware producers and resellers who rely on the availability of Warp 3D drivers to successfully market their Amiga hardware.

Hyperion Entertainment fully understands that the company has a responsibility towards the Amiga community including the hardware producers because of its control over the Warp 3D API and no attempt has ever been made or will be made to exploit this position unfairly.

We have already successfully negotiated agreements with Matay and DCE regarding Warp3D V4 support for the Voodoo 3 on their respective PCI hardware. We are therefore happy to report that Voodoo 3 drivers for these PCI solutions will be available shortly.

A similar proposal was made to Elbox but so far we have not received any reaction.

Users considering purchase of a PCI solution for Amiga and who are interested in high-performance 3D graphics should investigate the availability of Warp3D drivers prior to making their decision to opt for one or the other PCI solution.

It should also be noted that Warp3D will remain free for end users. (ps)

Icon-Designer for DirectDos wanted
Marius Schwarz is searching a graphician who could 'just' paint about 1,200 icons. Those Icons shall be used to identify datatypes in DirectDos, so it isn't really about 1,200 icons, but might be only 300 to 400 - so it's an absolutely practicable task :-). At this time 166 (more or less good) icons exist. If you are interested, please mail to Marius Schwarz. (ps)

Survey on the Airsoft Softwair Homepage
Andreas Falkenhahn wrote:
The Airsoft Softwair Homepage was completely reworked on this weekend and also a poll was added which will contain a recent vote from time to time. The first poll has just been added: Many users told me that they would prefer paying by credit card for my programs (especially users from overseas). So I'm asking now if there are really people out there who want this method of payment. If you do not order any of my programs or the The Best Of Airsoft Softwair Gold Edition CD-ROM just because you cannot pay with credit card please vote now on the Airsoft Softwair homepage. But please vote honestly! Thank you! (sd)

GFX-BASE: Test of 'WordHunt', Search, Links
Kevin Hansen has released an English test of the think-game 'WordHunt' by Robert/Bob Dickow on GFX-BASE.

'WordHunt' is about finding words hidden in a box full of characters.

Moreover the website was extended at other areas:
the search function has been strongly enhanced, so among other things searching inside of the scene demo database is now possible, too.

New links as well as game and scene demo entries were added and some days ago the GFX-Base introduced the last week's Aminet highlights. (sd)

File manager: DirOpus V4.15k Beta
Jacek Rzeuski has released beta version 4.15k of the file manager 'DirOpus' on 25 May 2001. This update contains some small enhancements listed in the history.

This version outputs debug information to the serial interface which can be redirected to a Workbench window using Sushi/Sashimi.

This beta version only contains changes since 'Directory Opus v4.15'. That version and the source code are to find on the download page.

DirOpus is a file manager, coded by Jonathan Potter and Greg Perry of GP Software. The source code was released under the terms of GNU public license in 1999. Jacek Rzeuski then started to rework and enhance the program.

PCI: Matay and Elbox (Update)
Matay published an official statement about the letter Elbox Computer sent to Fabio Trotta. The letter by Elbox bears on Fabio Trotta's test of the Prometheus board on NoRiscNoFun and is part of the statement.

Supplement 27 May 2001
Elbox accused Matay to use graphics board drivers by Elbox without permission, whereas Matay refers to an existing contract with the Picasso96 team. (Desiatox) (sd)

Supplement 28 May 2001
Today also the Picasso96 team piped up to definitively invalidate the accusation, "we, the Picasso96 team, just want to straighten out that the Voodoo boards driver utilized for the test was written by ourself. After all we have experiences with this chip-set since the MacPicasso850. Furthermore Matay are respectable business partners of ours. From our point of view all of the accusations launched by Elbox are completely weak and of unbelievable bad style". Entire message here. (ps)
