Fortnightly Q&A's mit Fleecy Moss - Runde 27

1) GregS: I think I understand what you have said in regard to AmigaDE. I trust this still means that the future of Amiga will be on (rather than beside) a VP system? As I am reading it part of the A2G is a full operating system with a distinct technology set that can be operated indepedantly?

Fleecy: AG2 is the next set of Amiga technology. It will cover all aspects and areas required in order to create a successful core for future products, of which the desktop AmigaOS will be just one. Different products will make sure of a subset of the AG2 family depending on the requirements of the customer. Both the AmigaDE and the AmigaOS are two such customers.

The future of the Amiga solution will be built on an architecture that is processor independent. AmigaOS4 as a product family will be built around the PowerPC processor.

2) rolpho: What about SDL implementation in OS4.0 - will it be full and fully compatibile with those under linux/windoze?

Fleecy: An SDL implementation is not a planned part of the AmigaOS4.0 distribution. It is being worked on as a community project by amongst others the Friedens, Jurgen Schober and Steffen Haeuser but it will be a contribution, albeit a greatfully received one.

3) elwood: Is Bill McEwen still alive ? i.e. will we see some executive update?

Bill: Yes I am alive and well despite all the hardships we have to go thru as a company.

With regard to future updates, you will see many new updates coming from us when we and our partners have finalized our projects. We are working very hard on many opportunities but as we have said, and you the community has asked of us, we will only make announcements when we have product in front of us or signed contracts in hand.

On behalf of the whole Amiga team, we want to thank our partners and the Amiga community for their great support and words of encouragement. The future is looking very positive for Amiga and I believe 2004 will be a fantastic year for everyone.

4) AmigaMac: With Lorraine Design developing beautiful [24bit color] replacement icons for Amiga. Is it possible that icons such as these will make their way to OS4 to replace the classic default icons that are in place now? These sort of icons would compliment the look-n-feel of OS4's UI.

Fleecy: AG2 will cover a complete redesign of many things, including the graphic agent services such as icons. In the meantime, enhancements have been made to the existing solution to extend its life in the short term. Evidence of this can be seen in the many released screenshots and a new set of icons will be released by Mason as part of the AmigaOS4.0 distribution.

5) Doug: Will the AmigaDE be able to rival such as the Nokia Ngage with online head-to-head/email type games?

Fleecy: The Nokia Ngage is a combined hardware and software package built upon Symbian and a Nokia custom interface solution. AG2 will implement a universal communications package that can sit on top of any physical layer mechanism, whether it be wired or wireless. On top of this will be services that allow individual instances of the operating systems to interrogate, locate andinteract with each other. These will be available to users and customers to build to their requirements.

6) angrybrit: What SCSI configurations are *officially*supported?

Fleecy: Please contact me (fleecy@amiga.com) with a more detailed question. What do you mean by 'configurations'? We can tack this to the end of the next Q&A.

7) samo79: I think Amiga must have an identity like IMac computer, any idea to make an Amiga custom case like a new A1200 ? Case like this: http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/~aminet/pix/trace/AMIGA-fantasy2.jpg

Fleecy: Amiga isn't making hardware for this current round of technology. The thirdparty deals and integrators are free to develop whatever looks or brands they wish. We aren't about to tell them what their products should look like, and I look forwards to seeing novel designs that go to show how versatile our platform can be.

8) Henglaar: Fleecy, you mention that human-readable XML preferences would allow personal/confidential information to be read that would be unreadable in an encrypted binary preferences file. How does that capability impact the security aspects of the system?

Fleecy: XML is just another format, like any other and like any other, it can be obfuscated, encrypted and access restricted. This will be done by otherservices. This is the point of a service based approach. Each service doesone thing and one thing well rather than one thing does several things - for example a binary preference representing and encoding.

9) AmigaMac: What is the latest on a new Amiga.com website layout? Will this behappening in correlation with the release of Amiga OS4?

Fleecy: The entire Amiga web presence (and indeed public presentation) is being redesigned and reimplemented, and will be rolled out as it becomes relevent to the announcement of certain products, projects and deals. The Amiga Power Platform (APP) website will go live a month or so before we hope to release AmigaOS4.0, to provide a focus for marketing efforts.

10) Herewegoagain: In December 2003, Amiga put out a call for User Groups to make themselves known by registering their info on the os.amiga.com website as part of the Amiga revival process. Can you give us any additional information about the next phase of the User Group involvement, what is planned, etc.?

Fleecy: At the end of february all the user group representatives, one per group will be put onto a list with Amiga representatives. We will then begin a process of discussion and consultation with them in which we will create a strategy for working with the user groups as the frontline of platform evangelism and support. We have been experimenting with this already with a few of the user groups and its success has encouraged us to extend this effort to all user groups. It is important that we can know how to support the development and growth of existing user groups and provide support for the creation of new groups whilst
also making use of them as a marketing resource.
